Mets get a well earned and rare mid-homestand day off. No travel, just enjoying the beauty of New York after a rain storm. When all that is done, they send José Quintana to the mound to tackle the incoming Houston Astros, a team sitting at .500 just like the Mets are, and just as hot, if not hotter, and deploying their top starter in Ronel Blanco.

Slugging outfielder Kyle Tucker is out until at least the end of the month, so he'll miss the series, but the rest of the lineup is pretty hot, coming off a 5-0 homestand, sweeping Colorado (no big whoop) and Baltimore (pretty huge whoop), but it's like that, and that's the way it is.

A 6-9 PM gig that coincides with an AppleTV game is OK by me. I'll catch a bit of it on my drive home if they're still playing at that point.

Since these'll be announcers parachuting in for the night, they'll try to play up irrelevant stuff to fill the time. So get ready for in-depth looks at Grimace and O.M.G. A mention of either merits a drink.

Who had McNeil for three hits and three RBI?

Also, we finally get a Citi Field debut for Cooper Hummel.

A near miss as Lindor turns is ankle.

Unsurprisingly shoos off the trainer, but the Mets have burned their only infield sub.

Garrett for the ninth.

Even with a five-run lead, Carlos Mendoza is doing everything he can to avoid pressing the Adcock button.

It certainly seems like this team is having fun. OMG is the kind of song I can see us getting tired of soon, but it's a catchy little number. Iglesias got caught lip-synching there but you have to kind of expect that, given the circumstances. The group hug at the end was kind of neat. If you don't get Apple, I'm sure clips will be on SNY shortly.

I saw J.D. Martinez in the crowd and realized how rare it is that you get multiple Cubans on one squad. It's like they're turning the locker room into a Miami partay.

A funny night on the scoreboard in that the NL standings totally reinforced themselves. The Mets and all six teams in front of them in the league-wide standings won, while all eight teams behind them lost, so they gained no ground on anybody they trail, but they put more distance between themselves and the scrum.

A lot of fun at the ballpark last night. I really didn't see the commotion coming after reaching the 5th (I think) with 2 infield singles that shouldn't have been and the Taylor HR. But Quintana somehow avoided the beating he deserved and the game got faster as it went, all good things.

Found another quality Italian deli in town and picked up an unbelievable sandwich to have with my Miller High Life. We got there early enough to get free hats, everyone was in a gay mood, as they might have once said. We were with McNeil in that at-bat, only asking for a dunk single. Lusty J-E-F-F JEFF JEFF JEFF chants.

Postgame performance/fireworks were only okay but celebratory, and everyone was in a good mood, chanting LGM as they descended the stars. For whatever reason the Queen Dance Crew was going up the stairs as we were going down and they got high fives all the way.

Shame we had to fall so far to come so far, as we're still just a game over.
