batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2024 Posted April 18, 2024 Someone should come up with a Bill James power/speed like ranking for these names. A player would score highly for the uniqueness of his name and also, for his baseball career output. Aaron and Mays and Cobb would score very highly on their career output. Gaylord and Yogi and Boog would score highly for their names, which, in their cases are one-of-a-kinds. Mantle would be very recognizable as the Mickey of baseball, but on the other hand, his first name is not so unique.Off the top of my head, without giving this too much thought, I'd guess that the Babe would score the highest on this metric.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 Well, by the time a high-concept thread like this one gets to its fifth page, thing are just about guaranteed to have gone at least a bit astray.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 His baseball cards do seem to say "Wilmer", but I see many cases where he signed autographs as "Vinegar Bend". And one where he signed it as "David"https://bill37mccurdy.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/mizell-0031.jpg?w=300&h=228>
