G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2024 Author Posted April 22, 2024 For those who enjoy reruns, Michael Tonkin has been re-DFA'd.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 This is really getting crazy. Maybe there needs to be a change to the roster rules so that non-elite relievers stop being so fungible. My first thought was to expand the 40-man roster to a 45-man roster, but that would probably just lead to more prospects being protected than middle relievers.I suppose you could have those extra five spots be reserved for players who have big-league experience. I'm sure there would still be loopholes to exploit, but I really think a change is in order. I wonder if it will be an issue in the next CBA?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 It depends on what you think the actual issue is.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 I'd like to see them go back to some flavor of the old option rule, under which you could only option/ recall a player one time (maybe two times) per year. The only reason (IMO) that they need so many reliever machinations is because the teams don't let starters pitch more than twice through the order any more (or X number of pitches).Since they do, there might have to be a modification to roster size, but this yo-yo stuff is a farce.Later
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 It took too long to expand the 25-man roster to 26. For a while, some teams would be playing with just three position player backups.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 Edgy MD wrote:It depends on what you think the actual issue is.Well, I, for one, would like to see fewer players bouncing between organizations multiple times during the course of a month, let alone a season. It would be nicer for the players, but I'm thinking as a fan. I'd like to be able to have my Mets be Mets, not just day workers.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 They've made a few rules to reduce yo-yo transactions like this, but teams clearly are finding a way to work around it. To me, that's just one more ugly side effect of Major League Baseball and its member organizations being allowed to control the interests of minor-league teams."Day workers" is a great description of what they are being treated as, however.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2024 Author Posted May 14, 2024 Yohan Ramirez knows from detachments. He can brief Joey Wendle. Both are being DFA'd, with Vientos and Lucchesi coming back.https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/mets-to-designate-joey-wendle-yohan-ramirez-for-assignment.htmlhttps://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/mets-to-designate-joey-wendle-yohan-ramirez-for-assignment.html
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2024 Posted May 15, 2024 Some Guy On Twitter suggested the Mets trade Wendle to Anaheim for Guillorme. Genius!

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Author Posted May 30, 2024 Jorge Lopez DFA'd; Danny Young recalled.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 Omar Narváez DFA'd , Mets get catcher Luis Torrens from MFY for cash , DiComo
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 Hero today, gone tomorrow.Luis Torrens is 28. He's been in AAA (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) all season, .279/.339/.469.He's appeared in 269 big league games since 2017, with the Padres, Mariners, and Cubs.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 He's a detachable Met, and that may be most of what we need to know, as it appears to be a highly desirable quality.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 You're right; he's probably quite detachable. He'll probably go to Syracuse when Alvarez returns.

That's cold from Stearns, releasing a former Brewer like that. Not that Omar didn't have it coming given his D and O this year.Whoever the fuck is Luis TorrensHe's a stranger to me, but I did some digging, and I was able to find a childhood photo of him.[fimg=550]https://metsrostercentral.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/luis.jpg[/fimg]
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2024 Posted June 1, 2024 According to SNY, the Mets have granted Jiman Choi's request to be released from Triple-A Syracuse.Later
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2024 Posted June 1, 2024 Geez, Syracuse area is so nice this time of year.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 I realize that Torrens is Venezuelan, but it feels odd to see 13 on the back of a non-infielder.The last Mets catcher to wear it has to be ... part-time backstop Clint Hurdle?

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 Good play.I watched the Mets in the Summer of Cerone in 1991, but somehow completely deleted him. I'm aware, of course, that he was there, but not a single concrete memory sticks.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2024 Author Posted June 5, 2024 Narváez and Lopez are each released.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 Seems like an overreaction to release Lopez over his temper tantrum. He showed passion, which is a lot more than what Mendoza's shown so far.
