Dylan Cease is a name that's been getting a lot of attention. He's about to turn 28 and has two seasons before he can become a free agent.

He had an ERA of 4.58 last year in 177 innings over 33 starts with the White Sox.

He eats a lot of innings. (It's a sign of the times that 177 innings seems like "a lot".)

He's been linked to the Mets, but I don't see it happening. A number of teams appear to be interested, and I doubt that the Mets would want to part with the (presumably younger) players it would take to get him. But that doesn't mean we can't talk about him, if we're so inclined.

I had to look him up. He was good in 2021 and great in 2022 (finishing 2nd in the AL CY Young vote). And then last year he sucked a big fat tuna. So I don't know. Does he still suck or not? Can we ask him first?

Cease and Desist is just begging to be a 2024 NY Post cover. Whether

it is a positive headline or not for the Mets remains to been seen.

Bruce? Donovan? John Prine, Loudon Wainwright?

I love him, but I don't think Prine's available for the gig.

Cool. I think that's the Pads #5, 7 and 8 prospects (per MLB) plus a good major league relief pitcher for two years of Cease. There's no direct comparison to what a Pete Alonso trade might look like (I can't stop thinking about our future with and without Pete), but Pete is one year older, has one year less of team control and Cease has been worth more fWAR than Pete for each of the last three seasons (that surprised me!).

If the Mets traded Pete today, all these things would be factored in even if the two star players are completely different varieties of stars. And if the Mets suck and teams come sniffing for Pete in July, I'm sure any hope that the return would be greater due to desperation on the part of contending teams would be offset by Pete only having a couple months left of service time by then. Fair warning, I may start a Pete Alonso WATP thread.

If we ever decide to curtail a discussion of former Israeli Prime Ministers I sure hope we title the thread, 'Should we cease to talk about Begin?'

This is worth underscoring. Until he stops making the chase for homerun totals, he won't realize his best level.
