Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 You're probably right. That's usually how these things go.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 Bush-Gore 2000 came after the 1953 correction, so Hughes, who had an awesome beard-and-stache combo, is the only burned one here. And he went on to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, which is an arguably better gig.[fimg=480]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/70/Charles_Evans_Hughes_cph.3b15401_%28cropped%29.jpg/800px-Charles_Evans_Hughes_cph.3b15401_%28cropped%29.jpg[/fimg]
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 Tennessee volunteered to become the 16th state on June 1, 1796. We've made it all the way back to the 18th Century!Tennessee also, apparently, has at least one football stadium.https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-tennessee-vintage-greeting-card-16568_51.jpg>
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 State Capitol buliding, University of Tennesse's Neyland Stadium, a scenic overlook possibly into the Tennessee Valley, the Nashville Parthenon, and ... SeaWorld?
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Sea world? That looks like a dam to me
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Good call. One of the Tennessee Valley Authority projects, no doubt. Probably Fontana Dam.I don't know the dates of these cards, but my first five Tennesse spots would all be musical — The Ryman Auditorium, Graceland, Sun Studios, Stax studios, and Dollywood.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 My wife just arrived in Nashville for a conference so this is good timing.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 There's a saying about Tennessee actually being three states divided by music. The western third, anchored by Memphis, is home of the blues; the middle third is dominayed by Nashville and mainstream country; the eastern portion gets you into the mountains where bluegrass was born.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 That's a pretty good musical legacy for one state.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Kentucky, where the grass is actually more green than blue, was the 15th state, entering the Union on June 1, 1792. Nice to see them representing Churchill Downs instead of yet another football field.https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-kentucky-send-vintage-greeting-card-online-16542_81.jpg>
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 In Kentucky they like basketball better.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 So we've got the Kentucky State Capitol, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park, Churchill Downs, and Mammoth Cave National Park. But no Louisville Slugger factory.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Vermont, became the 14th state on March 4, 1791. We're almost down to the Original Thirteen: Betsy Ross territory! But the lead is a slim one. Will we make it to Delaware? Will we make it past Delaware?https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-vermont-send-vintage-greeting-card-house-16571_89.jpg>
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 Rhode Island became the 13th state to ratify the Constitution on May 29, 1790.https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-rhode-island-large-letter-postcards-online-16565_42.jpg>
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 Someday again we'll reduce this by 2 in a single day.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 Yes, it would be great if, tomorrow, we could skip over North Carolina and go straight to New York!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 With the final game in the Braves/Nats series slated for a Noon start, some two hours ahead of our game, it's possible we could hit a quick tour if both NC & NY in rapid succession this afternoon.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 #12, North Carolina Just sayin'
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 North Carolina was the 12th state to ratify the Constitution, on November 21, 1789.https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/north-carolina-large-letter-postcard-online-16559_92.jpg>
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 So NC has a state house, the Biltmore Estate, some mountains, a city from the 1930's, a coast line, the Duke Chapel, and I don't know what is going on inside N and A
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 Giant turpentine factory?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 Probably tobacco warehouses.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 Tar factory known for the tar spilling on the floor and sticking to the soles of the workers' shoes.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 So my first thought was that the extra half-game lead plus one of the extra games the Braves has being erased from the schedule meant that even the Braveswinning out wouldn't guarantee them catching us ... then I remembered that them running the table would automatically involve three NYM losses so ...Nevermind!Still a good off-day for us even if the Phillies seemed determined to keep themselves from scoring.154 pitches thru 8 innings thrown by ATL pitchers; 114 thru 9 by Phillies So despite all the Braves' 1st pitch swinging, it still winds up a 1-0, 8-1/2 game taking 3:08
