Nevada being admitted as a state was actually a version of Gerrymandering. It wasn't that districts were rigged but the 'Silver State' was WAY short of having the

population required for statehood (like 12 people lived there at the time) but Lincoln and the Republicans were SO desperate for electoral votes (and Senators) in

advance of the '64 elections that they dispensed with those silly little rules in order to help ensure long, tall Abe a second term.

Turned out that McLellan got his ass kicked and Abe didn't need those 18 Silver Staters giving him three electoral votes.

Amazing that we could do a presidential election in the middle of a vicious and vile civil war and it could be less of a clusterfuck than our most recent attempts.

So how's this thread going?

Bascially we're down to a two game lead over a team that's the defending champs and has been 8.5 games better than us since the first of June.

So not only can this lead disappear inside a 48 hour span but the fact that we've got the Dodgers coming up makes it almost likely.

It seems like this whole winning the division strategy thing comes down to six words: But we've got an easy schedule!

That doesn't exactly instill me with a ton of confidence.

Well, "We've got deGrom and Scherzer (and Diaz)" is also part of the plan.

Since June 1, the Braves have gone 41-6 (.872) against teams not in position to make the playoffs (“non-playoff teams”). That seems…unsustainable. Against playoff teams, they're 15-14.

In their final last 36 games, the Braves have 20 games against non-playoff teams and 16 against playoff teams.

Since June 1, the Mets have gone 28-10 against non-playoff teams, a more realistic .737 winning percentage. Against playoff teams in the same period, 17-19.

In their final 36 games, the Mets have 6 games against playoff teams, and 30 against non-playoff teams.

And they have a 2 game lead. There's a reason FanGraphs has the Mets with a 78% chance of winning the division. (And a 100% chance of making the playoffs).

Also: 35.

(And a 100% chance of making the playoffs).

The Magic Number for a playoff spot (the third Wild Card) is only 25, over the Brewers. A much easier number to hit. The Mets are 12 games ahead of Milwaukee.

The Magic Number for the division title is as far East as it's been so far this year, in West Virginia. The 35th state entered the Union on June 20, 1863, splitting from Virginia during the Civil War.

Like Nevada, WV was also a state admitted to the Union by Lindoln and pals by steamrolling the rules governing such stuff.

And there I thought that Kansas was "The Jayhawk State."

Why is Kansas called "The Sunflower State"?

More than 3,000 years ago, American Indians utilized the native sunflower for food; over the centuries, the seeds were cultivated and the modern, oil-rich sunflower emerged. In 1903, Kansas declared itself the “Sunflower State,” naming the wild native plant as its official flower.

Why is Iowa called The Hawkeye State?

Most sources say that Iowa's Hawkeye State nickname was inspired by a Native American warrior named Black Hawk and/or the character of Hawkeye in James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans. Though the exact history of the name is debated, most Iowans proudly refer to themselves as Hawkeyes.

That sort of ambiguity is weird. Our country isn't old enough for us to not know why we call ourselves what we call ourselves.

Yes, but the people producing those opt to put those out there so Iowa chooses a football field but not a corn field and Texas shows you a gridiron

but not hundreds of miles of coastline. Shallow choices if you ask me.

Pretty sad if you ask me.

I can see PA doing it. We love us our gridirons!

And who doesn't celebrate Cobalt Day?!

[fimg=500]https://cdn.britannica.com/73/22373-050-143340CB/element-cobalt-symbol-square-Co-properties-some.jpg[/fimg]

Cobalt is named after the dickish Germanic mythical creature kobold. The Democratic Republic of the Congo produces the majority of the cobalt extracted in the world, with DRC's distant neighbor Canada coming in an appropriately distant second place.

it has traditionally been a favorite for it's use in dyeing (cobalt blue) but is chiefly used today to create super allows such as those used in Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) batteries.

Cobalt!!

Yeah. Football is deeply embedded in the culture of Pennsylvania and especially Texas, which is probably the national capital of amateur football. But I don't think the states themselves have anything to do with those state greetings postcards. They're produced by private business interests.

It's just the whole idea of: 'let's show you what's unique about our state ... Look, we have football fields!!!'

Yeah, how original, so do the other 49
