It's a 2:20 start for Game 1 of 2 and I WILL PUNCH IN THE FACE THE FIRST PERSON WHO SAYS "as Ernie Banks said...." because we know it. Everyone knows it. Ernie was great but it's such a cliche. Gary, you're better than that. Don't do it during the opening of the broadcast.

While you're enjoying the game, I will be at Dulles International Airport picking up family that is returning from Italy. During the ride back, I will have to feign interest in the trip while the game is on the radio. Perhaps they can limit their comments to the commercial breaks.

In Game 1, Taijuan Walker faces Marcus Stroman (and please don't call him "old friend"). Stroman is making his second start since coming off the IL. On July 9, he started and went 4 innings, 0 ER, against the LAD. For the year, he is 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA. Walker is 7-2, with a 2.63 ERA.

Not a fan of the untraditional double-dip.

"So nice, let's play two. But take a break for some dinner." doesn't flow.

If the MLB Players' had a detail-oriented union it would try to stop split doubleheaders if only to show affinity w/the fans (and to prevent players from sitting around for 3 hours in a cramped, outdated, clubhouse) but no one cares what the fans think. The Mets have split doubleheaders scheduled on August 6 and 20.

Why do we assume fans dislike split doubleheaders?

If I had tickets to Friday's game and now the Cubs told me, “sorry, your tickets aren't valid anymore, and also good luck getting something else for the doubleheader because we rescheduled this as a split doubleheader onto an already-mostly-sold-out Saturday game”…I'd be pretty pissed.

In fact, I might say that rescheduling games with high ticket sales as split doubleheaders is the fan-friendly thing to do.

This doesn't strike me as a valid point. No one's being double-charged.

didn't someone suggest they should charge less for 7 inning games? well, does that mean charging double for non-split doubleheaders?

No.

Single-admission doubleheaders are almost never scheduled in advance; they most commonly occur as a result of rainouts. I suppose that unsold seats for a game that suddenly becomes a doubleheader could then be sold for a premium, but it's not as if people who already have tickets are suddenly going to be asked to pay more.

By contrast, the problem with 7-inning doubleheaders was that customers had already paid for a 9 inning game, but if that game was rescheduled as a single-admission doubleheader, then were then being robbed of 22% of what they had already paid for.

With the reversion to normal rules, a game rescheduled as a separate-admission doubleheader just preserves the status quo.

I wonder if we'll see Chris Bassitt out of the bullpen this weekend. He last pitched on Wednesday and won't pitch until next weekend.

The seven-inning doubleheader is still a thing? Will any of this bullshit

ever revert back to normal. I'm quite sick of it all.

At Wrigley and Fenway or wherever tickets are at a genuine premium, I can appreciate the utility of separate-admission affairs for the reason Gwreck spelled out. But I can't cotton to referring to “Game 1” and “Game 2”. That's for a traditional doubleheader, which is preferable in all other less grubbing instances. Saturday will have “the Day game” and “the Night game” in my book.

Subtle difference, but a person has to take a stand.

Phew, thank you. I nearly had a stroke a) for not being sure/knowing

and/or B) it was still a thing.

My guess is that they'll use the days off to hold deGrom out one more turn, and keep him from having to make his return against a top team.

Not ideal to me, but betting on teams being conservative with their pitching assets is a hard way to get broke.

Awful strike zone so far

I was gonna say, hope Taijuan gets the same sized zone.

Actually, since he's twice the size of Stroman, he should get twice the zone.

If the broadcast team mentioned this I missed it, but this would have to be the largest differential in opposing starting pitcher uniform numbers ever.

File that away for future trivia contests.
