Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 What is the largest U.S. city (by population) that has yet to spawn a Met?HINT: While no Mets player has been born in this city, they have produced a coach and manager.[FIMG=600]https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1480714378408-67cf0d13bc1b?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxzZWFyY2h8MXx8Y2l0eXNjYXBlfGVufDB8fDB8fA%3D%3D&w=1000&q=80[/FIMG]
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 24, 2021 Author Posted December 24, 2021 This city has a larger population than St. Louis, enjoying a strong 15.5% growth rate, while STL has one of the lowest growth rates in the country, at -7.66%.St. Louis has also produce a good share of Mets — most notably, Yogi Berra.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 Boston (total guess with no thought behind it)
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 24, 2021 Author Posted December 24, 2021 The ciudad that we're looking for is (supposedly) 14th in total population. Boston is currently listed at 21st, and St. Louis at 69th.

So while it may not have produced Mets in the past, future Mets are being born there now.But the flip side is that San Antonio is in Texas ... and Texas makes LOTS of ballplayers. And Jerry Grote, among others, was one of the ones made in San Antonio. The city we're looking at is smaller than San Antonio.

A population of 913,921 is something to brag about, except nobody born there has ever played for the Mets. It's almost like there's a law that all Ohioan Mets must have launched from Zanesville. What Columbus can (and, I'm sure, does) brag about is former Mets coach and manager Frank Howard, born in Columbus, graduating South High School in Columbus, and going on to matriculate at Ohio State University in Columbus. Frank is about as Columbian as they come.Oddly, in our recent review of what history we really want to celebrate, the City of Columbus has taken down their statue of Christopher Columbus, and discontinued their Columbus Day celebrations, but still, oddly enough, persist in calling themselves Columbus, which is, you know, whatever. But maybe they can put up a statue of The Capital Punisher instead.THE TOP 20 MOST POPULOUS CITIES IN AMERICA AND THE METS THAT MADE THEM1) New York City, New York (14 Mets, including Ed Kranepool)2) Los Angeles, California (22 Mets, including Darryl Strawberry)3) Chicago, Illinois (9 Mets, including Cliff Floyd)4) Houston, Texas (9 Mets, including Steve Henderson)5) Phoenix, Arizona (3 Mets, including Gary Gentry)6) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5 Mets, including Tom Filer)7) San Antonio, Texas (3 Mets, including Jerry Grote)8) San Diego, California (14 Mets, including Kevin Mitchell)9) Dallas, Texas (8 Mets, including Ty Kelly)10) Austin, Texas (4 Mets, including Ken Boswell)11) San Jose, California (1 Met, that Met being Trevor Hildenberger)12) Fort Worth, Texas (4 Mets, including Scott Hairston)13) Jacksonville, Florida (7 Mets, including Daniel Murphy)14) Columbus, Ohio (NO METS!!)15) Charlotte, North Carolina (1 Met, that Met being Jack Reinheimer)16) Indianapolis, Indiana (4 Mets, including Tim Bogar)17) San Francisco, California (10 Mets, including Keith Hernandez)18) Seattle, Washington (4 Mets, including John Olerud)19) Denver, Colorado (1 Met, that Met being David Peterson)20) Washington, District of Columbia (1 Met, that Met being Craig Anderson)A grass-roots movement located entirely within my bedroom has sprung up, lobbying the Mets to correct this historical oversight, and recruit a proud Columbian. One of the targets we are looking at is Caleb Ferguson, a 2018–2020 Dodger who missed 2021 following his second Tommy John surgery. Caleb's only 25, so who knows?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 24, 2021 Author Posted December 24, 2021 Much love to Rick White, born in Springfield, a little over 45 miles outside of Columbus. You tried, Rick!!
