IGT 9/19/21: PHI@NYM: At Least It Won't Ruin Your Sunday Afternoon

The Emmy Awards are on. SNF is a good matchup (KC @ BAL). I'm doing standup at the Silver Branch Brewing Company in Downtown Silver Spring, MD... and the Mets are playing again. Because the schedule says that they have to. Rich Hill (LHP) against Kyle Gibson (RHP).

Gibson pitched 6 innings and gave up one ER against the Mets on August 6 but who hasn't?

Look at Conforto's numbers against Gibson:

I was talking to my friend Jesse who is a WSH fan and like all WSH fans he doesn't like PHI because of Harper. It's a WSH thing, they think that he should have taken less money and played out of the division but he didn't so they hate him. Really, that's their logic. And Jesse, who is having a heart procedure tomorrow at Hopkins (thoughts and prayers from the CPF) asked me to "bring home a win tonight" because of his dislike of PHI. I said, "I'm not a Met so I can't miss a 95 MPH fastball right down the middle. I'm not a Met so I can't waive at a down and away slider two feet out of the strike zone. Only they can do that."

Any notion that Dom Smith is in the doghouse?

I mean, sure, he played his way out of his playing time. But it's not like McNeil has totally wiped him off the map statistically, but he's sure wiped him out of the lineup.

Terry may not have a lot to say over the long haul, and he's got more than a few "What I used to tell the fellas" cliches, but he's generally a good listen.

Good to see Louper come out to open (at least) the eighth.
It was a surprise given Luis' recent pattern of bullpen usage. Maybe the day off tomorrow swayed him.

The 8th inning of a one-run game and ESPN brings out the baseball talk show to discuss whether Bryce Harper should be the NL MVP, a discussion that could have occurred earlier in the game, or in the pre-game show or never.

Hooray! Jesse will be happy (that's a callback to the thread opener).

This one finished before SNF.

Sweep the rest of the season and ... well, that'll probably still fall short of the playoffs, but it'd be something.

Theoretically: PHI drops out of contention somehow and the Mets are within 3 1/2 of ATL before the 10/1 game which starts a 3-game series. ATL has an "only if it matters" make-up game against COL on 10/4. The Mets sweep, COL wins the makeup game, and (unless there is a bizarre tie-breaker) the Mets and ATL play one game for the NL East championship.

deGrom walks on the field and says, "I'm ready!", pitches 5 perfect innings and then Luis takes him out because he has had too many up/downs.

My current baseball consumption is generally falling asleep to an inning or two and I'm quite enjoying Terry's general shtick. Gives off enough authority to feel informative but not too "you wouldn't understand you haven't played the game" that some guys give off. I'm NOT having to listen to him for an entire game so maybe it grates after a while but I've enjoyed it. Give me Howie back and keep Terry and it'd be better again!
