We kept hearing that you can't let Soto beat you. Diaz got Soto. He let Andrew Stevenson and Carter Kieboom beat him.

We got the leadoff guy on in the 9th too, only we didn't do shit with him.

Remember when Díaz was bad in non-save situations and excellent in save situations? Since July 11, when Díaz has come in for a save, he has a 7.43 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and has blown five saves.

Another example of why you don't base strategy on stats like those by assuming that they're proof positive of cause-and-effect.

Diaz good in saves sits but not in non-save sits is a fact ... right up until it's not.

And with closers you're ALWAYS talking about small sample sizes.









And speaking of bad strategy: Juan Soto: 3-for-16 this series (w/5 BBs).

With all of these games being close (even if the final score didn't always indicate it) giving him a 1.000 OBA by "walking him every time" would have been a disaster.

He's good but you walk and/or 'pitch around' players like him situationally, not preemptively.

Not that it won't stop someone from saying the same thing next time we face Freddie or even some lesser light who's perceived as "a Met killer".
