Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 MLB messes up a lot of stuff, but they are doing a good job with the Field of Dreams game -- choice of visiting team not withstanding. I thought they did a good job with the Williamsport game, too.I've been to the field -- the set, not this new field -- and it was really neat. We have a nice family photo in the field with the corn and white house in the background.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 For the record, the first ML HR in the state of Iowa belongs to Jose Abreu. Unfortunately, the second belongs to Aaron Judge.3-1 Yanx, middle of the 3rd
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Which brings a question to mind: which states have hosted ML* games despite never having a home franchise? The Brooklyn Dodgers played occasional 'home' games in New Jersey.MLB staged a Sunday Night game (IIRC) in Ft Bragg a few years back putting North Carolina onto the list.Iowa makes three.I suspect there are more though can't think of any right now.* limiting this to NL/AL games since 1901
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 The A's played home games in Nevada (Las Vegas) early one season while the Coliseum was undergoing some renovations.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 The only field of dreams game I'm interested in is the one where the DH goesbye-bye and never returns. Sadly, soon will probably be the field of nightmares, coming this offseason to a corn field near you.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Sox = 3 in the cornfield vs 1 for the Yanx7-3, bottom of the 4thThe dimensions of the park seem to be about average; three of the four HRs have gone out to RF and it's not nearly as short as at YSIII (335 down the line). But the ball does seem to be carrying.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 (DebbieDowner)I'm pretty sure the ballfield is several hundred yards from where the field stood in the film. And beyond that, building an actual ballpark around the field kind of undermines the spirit of the enterprise, no?(/DebbieDowner)
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Author Posted August 12, 2021 I'm liking this game more and more. 7-3 Sox!!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Are they still making ethanol out of corn? For a while that was considered the big thing among environmentalists but it proved to be more promise than performance to the point where even Al Gore finally admitted that the (public) money poured into it had been a mistake. We were passing all kinds of factories? along the way last week (they looked more like overgrown barns) which I'm sure were making something out of corn and/or soybeans but I have no clue what specifically was going on inside.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 And the Yanx/Sawx played at least something resembling baseball in London a few years back. But I was thinking strictly about U. S. states.

Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Author Posted August 12, 2021 Trying to think of other potential places for such a baseball game in the US. They've already played in Williamsport and Fort Bragg. I know there was the exhibition game on Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, but ever a game that counted?Maybe Omaha, where the College World Series is played every year? Maybe a really cool minor-league stadium?A game in Alaska where the Goldpanners play, or in Hawaii?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Judge hits his 2nd of the night, this time with one on, and it's 7-6 ChiSox w/2 out in the 9thbtw, we're also well over 3 hours already
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Walk (Gallo) + HR (Stanton) and it's 8-7 YanxFuckin' Rojas!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 2R walk-off HR by Tim Anderson w/one out wins it for the Sox !!!!!!!!!About 20 corn rows deep
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 MFYs lose, so yes, it is heaven.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Author Posted August 12, 2021 OK, NOW it's heaven! Thank you, Tim Anderson, American hero.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Great ending, especially with Tim Anderson (a non-Met that I like) getting it done.Manfred said that there will be another game next August and the Cubs Manager accidentally said that the Cubs are in the game. Too bad that the Mets don't play the Cubs that month.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 They would have won if Jeter were out there.

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Interesting. So CHC v STL makes sense. (I know nothing about Iowa other than from Field of Dreams and the Caucuses every 4 years so I'd be curious to learn your other observations.)
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 I like that a Black man from Alabama is the hero on a night they're wearing throwback uniforms to the era of segregation.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Lunchpail's extremely expensive bat is a Tim Anderson model, so we're like, financially invested in him.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 So it seems that last night was the 15th time the White Sox have beat the Yanquis via a walk-off HR.The first one? 7/20/1919 ... some guy named Joe JacksonI'm guessing no one called it a 'Walk-Off' back then.
