Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 21, 2021 Author Posted June 21, 2021 Number 1,138 Jerad Eickhoff is starting his Mets career in a world of trouble.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 23, 2021 Author Posted June 23, 2021 Well, Tylor Megill was cruising in his debut but good ol' 1,139 just got taken deep by Ender Inciarte of all people.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 30, 2021 Author Posted June 30, 2021 Six runs home in the fourth against the Mets and they make the call for ol' 1,140, Thomas Szapucki.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 19, 2021 Author Posted July 19, 2021 Welcome Met 1,143, Anthony Banda!

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 When I was in 4th grade I wrote letters to all the MLB teams seeking autographs and stuff. My Twins were Rod Carew...and Geoff (I pronounced it, Gee-off) Zahn because his name seemed so exotic

My Twins were Rod Carew...and Geoff (I pronounced it, Gee-off) Zahn because his name seemed so exoticI did the same thing. It was a neighborhood tradition passed down to us from the kids a few years older than us. We called it "sending away to the teams". I worked my memory and figured out that I was also in the 4th grade when I did this. I sent away to practically all the teams in all the sports. The worst teams sent you a price list and maybe a schedule. Some other teams were very generous. The 49ers sent me a media guide. The Astros gave out tons of big pictures, stickers and all kinds of Astrodome paraphenelia.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 20, 2021 Author Posted July 20, 2021 Geoff Goetz had planned to be the team's first Geoff, but Mike Piazza had other plans.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Yes. I still have that stuff somewhere. I even saved the envelopes. As I recall it I heard about how to do it from a classmate, that's why I remember 4th grade. If I'm not mistaken we found the addresses in a school library reference book, proving that libraries could be cool
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 The envelopes were actually the coolest things since most had logo letterhead. The Mets and Red Sox though had very businesslike stationary, you'd never know who sent you George Scott and Butch Hobson photos from the envelope, it was just an address iirc
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 I've done a lot of that over the years to pad out the Mets autograph collection; I even still have a few out right now. Got two guys back from the Lexington Legends a few weeks ago -- Kevin McGowan and Robert Carson.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 My son did that this spring. He's only heard back from the Brewers, Padres, and White Sox. All of them said they can't send autographs through the mail but they sent some swag ranging from a postcard to a program.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 I still have all ot my "swag". Maybe I'll dig it out and take a pic or two of some of it. I re-checked: I was in the 4th and 5th grades when I did this.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Apart from the first pitch, a strong debut for Cookie Carrasco, Met #1,147.Though I'd like something besides 59 on his back. Always puts me in mind of Guillermo Mota.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 19, 2021 Author Posted August 19, 2021 The Mets may end up advancing the Met count the most times in a season since 1962.
