Deep Throat. Mark Spitz.

So now that I have youuse's attentions, here's my offer youse can't refuse: (Get it? Offer you can't refuse? It's a Godfather reference. 1972. See? 1972)

Take a look at the newest Topps Heritages. 1972 style.

A thing of beauty.

Apparently trading cards are hot again. Local retailers have been limiting the days cards are available and limiting purchases, even selling them from behind the electronics counter.

I was in one store on the allowed day, and was pleased to see boxes of Topps' Opening Day set, and some of the Heritage packs, were on the shelves.

There was also a case of boxes of some basketball cards just put on the shelf. I don't care about basketball cards at all. But some guy sees this, pushes his cart up against the shelf, reaches in with both hands and tries to scoop them all into his cart, then grabs all the cello packs. Keep in mind, the boxes were $26 each. There must have been 15 or 20 of them. Who has that kind of money?

Another guy came up and asked if he was buying all of them, and the hoarder let the other guy have a couple of the cello packs. Incredible. A store employee came by after the hoarder left, and another guy asked about the limits. He said the cashiers are afraid to confront people who are breaking the rules, and the cards would probably be going back to behind the electronics desk next time they came in.

I enjoy the cards and like putting together sets. But the hoarders and speculators take some of the fun out of it.

The baseball card thread Ceetar was seeking.

Thanks. I don't know if the search is working for things posted before the move.

Here's three cards from my Tlopps pack. Nava spent season 17 in the shadows, but she'll be back withe Sunbeams for season 18 after being foreshadowed for Joe Voorhees.

I guess you guys referenced this above. Luncheonettes, candy shops and delis need to penetrate this category again. (Geekling out on journo grammar, this blog doesn't use the word "allegedly" correctly in the headline; it should be "reportedly" or "said to be")

Not exactly 2021 baseball cards, but here's an article on the "best Mets baseball cards":

And here are the cards that made their cut (your mileage will vary):

A topic that deserved investigation has been investigated: Deadlines for Topps putting players in new places under new (or old) designations in the ‘70s.

https://sabrbaseballcards.blog/2021/04/14/the-deal-with-deadlines/https://sabrbaseballcards.blog/2021/04/14/the-deal-with-deadlines/

So, that Michael Wacha craziness is actually credible by 1972 standards?

Goodbye Topps?

Major League Baseball will abandon Topps as its partner for trading cards, ending a relationship that's been in place since 1952.

Fanatics, the company that makes sports apparel, is expected to get the trading card deal instead, according to two people familiar with the matter. Fanatics and MLB declined to comment.

MLB renewed its deal with Topps in 2018, and the existing deal ends in 2025. MLB Players' Association deal also aligns with the league, so its deal would end too.

Nobody else can believe that, either.

But seriously, this move doesn't bother me in the least. And who knows? Maybe the new company will come out with a better line of cards. But say goodbye to the Topps Heritage line, among others.

What does bother me is that the MLB baseball card producer has a monopolistic hold on the baseball card market. I suppose it's MLB's right. I wonder if, under present market conditions, there's an antitrust lawsuit somewhere in there. Maybe not because if there was, some company would've taken a shot by now , you'd figure.

Whatever happened to Fleer and Donruss? I thought it was decided forty years ago that anyone could print baseball cards? I suppose I haven't been paying much attention to the industry. It seems like something has changed.

In 2009, MLB awarded an exclusive contract to Topps, effectively removing all the other companies from the market. The MLBPA still had a contract with Panini, allowing them to produce cards of players with no logos. The Fleer and Donruss brands have floated around the past few years - Panini makes a current "Donruss" set that hearkens back to the 80s sets.

I have every Topps base set from 1970 to present, and I think the end of the Topps run will be the last set collected for me. I have a company in Iowa that mails me Mets team sets, and I'll keep that up. But no more set building.

Honestly, I think Topps has become lazy in recent years with the base set. Seem like a slight variation of the same bland design for the last five years. And the company issues way too many sets and variations of the same sets.
