Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2021 Posted January 11, 2021 Seaver should be the winner for lots of reasons. Every once in a while you have to break the rules. Newsday did so cleverly and appropriately, presenting an urgent story with current implications (Covid 19) in a format that recalled the past glory. It's great. The Alonso cover also "looks back" -- at 2019. Less relevant in 2020 as as we all know, it wasn't an "Amazin and fun year" and practically every pitcher in the National League "Beat Pete"VOTE TOM
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2021 Posted January 11, 2021 Yeah, I voted Tom for the same reasons. It captures a recent moment in time really well for a cover that is paying tribute to another era. Years from now when families are strolling hand-in-hand through the halls in Stockholm and they see the Dow and COVID headlines next to Tom, they'll be instantly transported back to shitty 2020 thanks to this cover.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 11, 2021 Posted January 11, 2021 Yeah, the only problem I had with the Seaver cover was so much damn padding. But that seems mostly to be an issue of it being the style of the era they were calling back to, and it would be miserly of me to dock them much for that.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 I can't vote for Tom Seaver's death. I just can't

Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 I liked the other Seaver covers, the nice portraits with "The Franchise" and the dates. No "dementia," no "COVID." More of a tribute. This one is more like a gimmick.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 So it turns out you can beat Pete.
