Good Things About The 2020 Mets

I'm talking about on the field, not spiritually ("just that there was Mets baseball") or off-the-field ("that the Wilpon Era is almost over"):

1--Jacob deGrom is still the best pitcher in baseball.

2--Edwin Diaz is either really good or at least had a good few weeks to hopefully build from (although the HR against the MFYs still stings).

3--Robinson Cano can still rake (2 and 3 don't mean that you're off-the-hook for the Kelenick trade, Brodie)

4--David Peterson. Who knew? He's locked into the 2021 rotation.

5--Andres Giminez. The starting SS on Opening Day for 2021. Sorry, Amed.

6--Dom. 1B, LF, DH, it doesn't matter as there are DomBombs and Dombles galore. Plus, he's a fine person and I'm happy that he's a Met.

7--The emergence of Michael Conforto as a star.



What else?

I've seen 3 or 4 different "Top 25 Rookies" lists over the past few days and none of them listed David Peterson.

Nimmo proved his hitting performance from two years ago was not a fluke.



McNeil hit .318 despite some rough patches.



Alonso had an .817 OPS despite a rough patch that lasted all season.



The hitting overall was a LOT better than you would guess from their record.

Oh, and Luis Guillorme quietly made the most out of limited opportunities.

There's lots of positives to take out of this season. The rotation needs a heaping helping of help but I like the lineup and the potential for this team to score a lot of runs in 2021. I'm also guardedly optimistic about Edwin Diaz sustaining his 2020 success next year.

In the end Cheif Brody fucked up preferring Stroman to Wheeler, and inadvertently put the club in a spot where they had to rely too heavily on Matz and even getting an out of the blue performance from a rookie starter, will wind up needing to hit the open market they tried to outsmart for 2 or even 3 starting pitchers while seeing a good offense and another great season by deGrom, most days, go to waste again. Acted like a contender 2 years straight and missed twice



I guess that's not really a good thing.

Stroman/Wheeler was only a choice in the world of Freddy Coupon. Why not both?



This year could have started with deGrom/Syndegaard/Wheeler/Stroman/Matz. Then when Syndergaard got hurt and Stroman opted out Pederson would still be there and we wouldnt have seen endless WachaWacha. If the Mets replace Wacha and Gsellman's 11 starts with Wheeler, they are pretty close to sniffing playoffs.



Positives? Alonso was a 123 OPS+ in a bad season and he would have been our 6th best hitter by that measure behind Smith (169 - LF), Conforto (156 - RF), Nimmo (146 - CF), Cano (144 - 2B), McNeil (131 - LF/3B)



JD Davis also provided positive hitting as well as ability to fake 3B and LF.



Gimenez looked like he could avoid embarrassment with the bat at only 21 years old while playing good defense at SS. Small samples and all but he could be hte gem out of this season.



Guillorme looks to maybe be part of the future as well, at least as a utility infielder.





The offense looks set even though you need to to live with a subpar defense to get there. a competent catcher is the only real need.

Somehow, someway, playing like THIS, Wilson Ramos produced positive value as a player on field, according to B-R AND Fangraphs.



Guillorme/Gimenez/Cano/Rosario (with Mauricio eventually lurking in the wings) is exactly the sort of middle-infield depth you'd like heading into a season, no?
