Neither.

Sorry - that we could not keep him healthy enough to achieve what we felt was his potential when he was acquired.

I see him as one more example for the past discussions we have had about the competence of the team's medical staff.

Both. I felt bad for him as a Met, he had the ability you could tell, but for whatever reason couldn't bring it regularly, wasn't mean enough, got pushed around too much by the fans and media. How certain humiliations (assigned 3 different uni numbers) couldn't spark him but another (basically released) could is a shame for us and does make me hate him, a little.

I had my moment of z'Enaud when Travis emerged as a force in the playoffs with the Rays last year. This year he's a fucking Brave.

I tend to think catchers have a better chance of flourishing after moving on from the organization they came up with. It's The Jerry Grote Principle.

That said, I can't imagine why the Mets let him take the field with that Julio Franco batting stance. That was insane. I think they certainly underserved him in that sense. Also, they frequently tried to get by without a catching coach during his era.

I always liked d'Arnaud, although I didn't regret his release at the time (I thought he was as done as Matt Harvey still appears to be). And I'm always happy when guys I rooted for make nice comebacks, unless they REALLY wore out their welcome here (which d'Arnaud certainly didn't) or they do it in pinstripes. I agree with what 62 said about our medical staff, though.

he was mostly a bad catcher that couldn't stay healthy as a Met...we have plenty of unhealthy Dh's in the past 2 seasons...just a little surprised that he's shining for the Braves

To the Braves credit, they have him signed for next season as well. The Mets lose both their catchers to the free market this offseason, and if he were available, they'd be in a curious position with regard to deciding whether to pursue him.

The best catchers available otherwise are expected to be Yadier Molina and J.T. Realmuto, and Molina isn't likely going anywhere.
