I guess this means Cordell's days as the defensive RH hitting noodle bat pinch runner are numbered, Marisnick is a ways from coming back, and Lagares is on the pay-no-mind list.

Unless this was BVW's only way to get something for Humphreys, I don't get it. Hamilton is a plus defender but that's what Marisnick is for (I know he's hurt) and so is Cordell. He's very fast but so is Fargas (currently hanging out in Brooklyn).

how long is the roster 30 players? might be the best pinch-runner in the league if the Mets can stash him on the 40 but off the 25 until playoffs?

Yeah he's a super pinch runner in the age of stupid baseball 2020. Imagine this stupid bullshit: top of the 9th, 2 outs, runner at first. Pinch run Hamilton. You could steal him, yes. Or you could have him sit down between first and second and get "picked off". In-form Diaz (fantasy, I know) mows down the opposing team in the bottom of the 9th and Hamilton starts the 10th on second with no outs. This idiotic scenario is possible in 2020 now.

It is pretty dumb, but it seems like a good strategy given the dumb rules - pinch run him with 2 outs knowing he starts the 10th on 2B if caught stealing.

You can also presumably pinch run for the guy on the 2nd anyway, right?

Please reacquire Cesar Centeno for base-stealing drill purposes.

The Mets have plenty of hitting, assuming Alonso's slump is a temporary funk. The RISP issue is a statistical anomaly. We laugh at old-school fans who criticize a player for not being "clutch", but somehow we still criticize a team when the randomly scattered hits don't happen to cluster for a while.

One problem the Mets really do have is four corner outfielders and no centerfielders on the active roster. So, yeah, it might be nice to have Hamilton on our side.

I keep reading this as "Cesar Cedeno" and thinking that he'd be a great fit if he hadn't retired 40 years ago.

Yeah, I have vague memories of that. I checked BBref, and he actually retired in 1986. I mainly remember him as a 70s Astro.

The Cedeno homer has been eclipsed by the Pendleton homer two years later.

If I were in Congress, I'd add Camp Pendleton to the list of military bases targeted for a name change. The name, and that home run, must be stricken from all recorded history.

So let it be written.

So let it be done.

Cesar Cedeño with the 1985 Cards was one of the all-time most successful deadline acquisitions, and a huge part of why the Mets came up just short in the division race.

He kind of gakked in the post-season, though.

Jim Kaat, coaching for the Reds in 1985, clued his old manager Whitey Herzog in that Cedeño still had something left, so the Rat traded for him. I'd like to think this has kept Kaat out of the Hall.

They DFAed Humphreys for Peterson? Or for someone else?

I think it's kinda fun how Brodie keeps finding new ways to give up prospects for defense-first/absolutely-NO-hit outfielders (Broxton, Marisnick, Hamilton) he could have signed free and clear earlier. I also like that he seems to be doing his best to squeeze 162 games of Brodie into a mere 60 games. Dig that work ethic, Bro MacIlvane!

For a GM who was praised for how he handled the last draft, Brodie is treating prospects in their minor league system like qualified scientists in the CDC.

He saves that for FREE AGENT signees, and only in OTR comments that only he could have made
