Lowrie shows up with a rather large brace on his leg, says it's to alleviate symptoms, but won't reveal what those symptoms are.

"This is just a brace that alleviates my symptoms and makes me feel like myself," Lowrie said. "Like I said, I'm wearing this brace to alleviate my symptoms and so I can feel like myself... I don't want to get into specifics of symptoms."

When you immediately repeat yourself, it instantly makes your claim more credible. Like I said, it's more believable if you make your claim a second time, right away.

Lowrie could become known as "Brodie's Folly". They didn't need him but the former CAA Agent's gotta help out his former clients, he was dead weight last season and things aren't off to a great start this season. Plus, of course, it ties up the limited money that is available to help the team.

But the title of Brodie's Folly could change over time if Diaz continues his decline and Kelenic reaches the potential all the scouts and evaluators say he will.

Also, who knows what other title-worthy moves Brodie will make?

As For Lowrie, at least nothing he has suffered has been contagious (knocking wood).

of course Lowrie is actively on the field doing stuff, Diaz has been working with Pedro Martinez and his pitches do in fact still actually look good, and Cano out-hit Alonso in the second half last year.

so lots of story still to be written.

I'm just worried that this will wind up becoming the longest thread in the history of the CPF.

In Lowrie's defense, he has been unlucky to an unforeseeable degree. (I mean, it's not like he was chasing wild boars or anything.) But bmfc is right that he was never needed, and the Mets were lucky that he wound up not taking time away from McNeil.

Jed Lowrie is old and far removed from what he has done in the past

Anything nice would be gravy

What bothered me is that the team refused to use him in the field once when he was finally activated down the stretch, and Mickey Callaway got all Willie-like churlish when asked about it.

You'd've thought somebody said something about seeing him tomorrow.

is there a Lowrie thread in the archives from when he was acquired? I'd be interested in seeing what people thought about the signing at the time.

We were appropriately wary. I was optimistic, but not without reservations.

I do enjoy the Centerfield "Arrested Development"-narrator-style drop-in at the thread's end, there.

A few days after the Mets signed Lowrie, the MFYs signed DJ Le Mahiew for $2 million more per year. Lowrie had a better OPS+ and oWAR (9 VS 3.2) than DJ in the two years prior to the signings and DJ was older than Lowrie. It looked like the Mets had gotten the better of those deals.

Funny how it worked out in 2019. (Actually, NOT funny at all)

Let's see how 2020 works out.

Yanks signed LaMahieu to play second base. Lowrie was supposed to be a utility guy as we already had Cano at second. And even if he's perfectly healthy in 2020, he's still just a utility guy; he's not going to dislodge either Cano or McNeil unless they're injured.

I think our inclinations in that thread last year were correct at some level: Brodie musta had other plans in mind when Lowrie was acquired. Sorta like how he wound up with both Stroman and Wheely. If you back into it seems like they got Stroman with the intention of sending Wheeler packing, he just didn't or couldn't complete a second deal. Rookie GM

I don't think so. He still had Didi for short, Glyber for second and Andujar (ROY?) for third. With that infield (Andujar hadn't been injured yet), seems like DJ was insurance, just like Lowrie was.

Alternatively, Brodie Van Halen might not have had a specific deal in mind, but was looking for a fungible guy who could be penciled in at multiple different places, depending on how the roster continues to sort itself out, or on how injuries sort themselves out. I remember the idea with Xavier Nady was that the Mets had set aside money for a big run producer, but the guys they were talking about were both outfielders and firstbasemen, and so they got Nady first to be their firstbaseman if they got Manny Ramirez, or be their rightfielder if they got Carlos Delgado, which they did.

I think super utility guys are seeing their stock go up because they give GMs that sort of flexibility. Going into 2019 with the multi-positional flexibility of Lowrie, McNeil, Davis, and even Dom Smith really put the team in a good position to adapt going forward as injuries played out. Unfortunately, one of the biggest of those injuries was to Lowrie.

the problem with Lowrie isn't so much his age, as much as his injury history...

He's had 12 years of MLB experience, but has only had 4 seasons with more than 340 At Bats...and of those seasons, he's only had 3 seasons that I would judge as more than mediocre (2018, 2017 and 2013)...if you go to his wikipedia page, you have more mentions of being injured than accomplishments...

Is a healthy Lowrie better than a healthy Luis Guillorme (from an offensive perspective) or a healthy Wilmer Flores (from a defensive perspective, and yes, I know that Wilmer is gone)? yes but...I really don't expect a healthy Lowrie in a Mets uniform

I have worn a rather large brace on my left knee for 20+ years. based on my experience and no recollection of any other MLB player playing effectively with something similar, i am pretty sure it will not work out for jed to be anything other than a PH or DH unless he can get healthy enough to play without the brace.

I've got to think Edwin Nuñez was about them going a little big on veteran utility infield depth, under concern that Lowrie may not be able to contribute.
