Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Can't go wrong here. Two amazing covers.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Author Posted August 6, 2019 As iconic as Casey is, I had to go with the action shot of Dwight Gooden.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 I guess I'm a little disappointed its come down to these 2. I thought the whacky paperclip arm Gooden that got trampled in an earlier showdown was a better shot. He doesn't look as electric in this pic as he actually looked irl.\The craziest thing about the Stengel shot is that in the full length centerfold, you discover he's wearing ROOS
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 It comes down to the Mets at their birth and a Met at the best any Met has ever been in life.Nobody better to deliver the Mets into existence, though Dr. Stengel looks like he wants us to step outside into the hallway and discuss how difficult a procedure this is gonna be.Dr. K, on the other hand, is operating free of stress. His action shot is ideal. Dwight Gooden is a Met on the cover of Sports Illustrated doing great things in a great Met era. You want to watch him throw that pitch and all the pitches to follow. It can be argued that individual performances never got better than Doc Gooden in 1985. It can also be argued that the Mets never got better at fronting magazines than the first time one of them tried it.The 1962 Mets achieving immediate perfection — who'da thunk it? Casey doesn't need action to create excitement. Nor did he require much of a baseball team. God knows they needed him.
Double Switch Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 For me it's more that from childhood, Casey Stengel meant baseball to me. It's a sort of DNA thing.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 I'm bummed and a little surprised it came down to two SI covers. I give Dwight the slight edge despite the McDonald's colors on DWIGHT THE GREAT.
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 This isn't even the best Doc cover
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Author Posted August 6, 2019 I really thought the Time cover would knock Casey out of the competition. It came fairly close.
