The Mets have seen fit to update their security policy to ban backpacks at the ballpark.

Any other style of bag is fine. They also made no change to the size limits on bags. So a tote/messenger bag/purse of the same size with a million pockets remains fine; it's just backpacks.

The proffered reasons for the change are “safety” and “efficiency” which of course are not true.

what's not true about it? it's about efficiency. The efficiency of searching your bag, which is mostly unnecessary and could be accomplished just as easily by hiring a few more people, but still true.

it's dumb and ridiculous of course. They claim they're the 6th team to do it.

They may *think* that is about efficiency. It's not true that this action will itself make things more efficient.

Even if there was some claim that searching a backpack takes longer than, say, a messenger bag (dubious), they are still searching bags in the bag line. Plus, drawing more distinctions of what is and isn't allowed adds to confusion and delays.

Now, I suppose it could theoretically be argued that it helps “efficiency” by trying to just discourage people from bringing bags in the first place but that's not something to be embraced.

As noted, if efficiency and safety were real concerns, the team would hire more and better employees to oversee entrance to the park.

Personally, going to a game often means spending a good portion of the day in

the city taking two trains and two subway rides. Not having a small day pack

in tow is going to be a major inconvenience and turn off.

That's such booshit.

Also, another year, another vapid ripoff Ford between-innings promotion that's not funny or entertaining in the least.

This year they tried ripping off the Braves by having fans challenge an athlete, only to challenges like burpees and pullups, that they shoot underneath the stands (I guess in the trainer's area or whatever) so it's completely devoid of baseball or Ford for for that matter.

You may recall they also embarrassed themselves ripping off the Brewers a few years ago with the race (only cars instead of sausages -- not funny!). Last year I think they junked people dressed as ugly cars for a tricycles disguised as cars race, which was also not funny or interesting.

It's out in center field, no? the dumb Ford thing? I tweeted about it a bunch during opening day, took a bunch of pictures of the ridiculous thing.

Typical 'path of least resistance' stuff, where they just throw out whatever was pitched at them by the approved MLB marketing vendors. These guys do the loops at the Winter Meetings selling this stuff to the teams. If you check out promotional calendars across the league, you see a lot of similarities.

The airplane race was so perfectly fitting that they ditched in ..2004? was dumb. Just bring that back! You can even still use the 4 Shea colors for nostalgia reasons.

They sent out an email with pictures of approved bags vs small backpacks.

There's no way in holy hell it takes more time looking inside a backpack with

two small pockets (and you're instructed to please open all items before reaching

the inspection table) than it does rummaging through a medium sized purse

or a shopping back full of stuff. People carry purses around that weigh 25 lbs.

I haven't been to a game this season yet, which is as long as I've gone without going since 2004. This doesn't make the proposition any more exciting.

This was implemented at Nationals Park where they also have lockers available nearby (for a fee, of course). You have to remember to bring a shopping bag or a drawstring bag.

I was going to say "bring back the Great Shea Airplane Race"

Did it really last until 2004? I thought they ditched it after 9/11

I showed Fgirl so she knows to use a drawstring bag this year. As one of the minority, who only ever drives to games and parks on the Citi grounds, this doesn't really phase us much. But I get the frustration for you borough dwellers.
