Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 TV Guide! Wow.TVG bald-faced newsstand ploy won't win, however.Living Out is also out. Not to stereotype, but how do they make a gay magazine without a fabulously designed cover?Nancy pulls off that weird-ass dress. They give off a vibe like Ross Hagen and Diane McBain in SIDEHACKERShttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dZ7V9nFlpvw/UxAJzlqVSHI/AAAAAAAADsQ/eR0pV0kKkJg/s1600/side2.jpg>I like the Davey J cover too and I was into the blue tops
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 When I was a kid, I thought that Nancy Seaver was the prettiest woman in the whole wide world. Love the leather Jiffy-Pop hat.But I went with Davey and the boys.
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Gotta love Seaver's smug expression: "I'm the best pitcher in baseball, I'm a defending World Champion, and I'm married to Nancy." I think most of us would have that same expression.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Tom 'n' Nancy. Jiffy Pop hat, lol. Yeah and not only the smug expression but the possessive yet casual arm around her shoulders....
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Vote for McCall's. It does gay better than the gay.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 These two are outstanding What a wallpaper on McCall's. I feel like this cover was the inspiration for all the Austin Powers movies. But Davey is amazing, too. I'm gonna have a think on this one.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 You guys are crazy. I can't think of anything good about that Johnson cover. He doesn't even have a hairy forearm like Shamsky.I have a real bug in my pants about Spring Training shots. They compose these shots as if, "God dammit, here are the METS doing METLY things — you may now stare with wordless awe" ... but they're all shown in fake mesh Mets uniforms in a fake Mets ballpark. Here, Gary and Darryl inexplicably join Dwight on the mound, posing on either side like they're mob collectors about to kneecap him.At least the Sadecki Spot photos featured the players in real Mets uniforms.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 I wonder if Darryl could still fit into those pants

Looks like Camera Carter's already getting more credit than reigning runner up MVP Keith, just for getting there after, rather than before Keith. And he hadn't even played a single game as a Met yet. Those TV Guides are, collectively, a quadritiptych. It's hard to tell from those images which are on the dark side (even accounting for the fact that those TVG cover photos are Intentionally dark) but if you line up the TVG's in the exact reverse order from which they're presented, the backgrounds connect to form a Shea Stadium backdrop.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Yeah, Carter and Straw on the mound is funny, but Doc's dead-center and that's his domain. I like how the photog is like 8 feet tall or climbed a ladder to get a down shot Davey and the guys on top of the elevated pitcher's mound. Bonus points for orange font that goes with the Met colors. It looks nice from my eyeballs, but I'm leaning towards the Spy Who Shagged Me.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Anybody remember what I think was a New York Times Magazine cover story called "Gooden's Golden Season," about this then-almost-unknown teenager in the Mets' system doing the unthinkable, striking out 300 batters at Lynchburg?

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Married love is alive and well in 1970 and in the 2019 Magazine Cover Derby."Hey, there's nothing but Mets games listed in here!" I'd like to think TV Guide subscribers said that week. The contemporary Mets seem to lead the league in magazines that I assume are available for the taking as you leave your local lobby.Interesting how once a generation the Times seems to be charmed that the Mets exist.
