G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 (edited) How many men on third for the Mets? With J.D. Davis's debut this weekend, 172 in all, 43 since David Wright came along in July of 2004. Davis is the first altogether post-David third baseman, as the most vestigially legendary of Met positions officially reinstalls its revolving door until another 5 in our scorecard (if not with a 5 on his back) comes along and rips it out of its hinges for another dozen or so seasons. Here's the whole freshly updated gang...172. Joe said something like "That's not the old baseball player, is it?" The guest and his co-host (Evan Roberts, who knows the new stats), after recovering from the question, assured Joe it wasn't the same. But I don't recall whether or not they explained what PECOTA meant or if Joe understood them.Later

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 I feel like that's some sort of record of time passing without a third base debut.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Author Posted July 26, 2020 Upthread, you'll see three seasons contained no Mets 3B debuts: 1973, 1982 and 1990.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Yeah, this is nearly 15 months, but that's not quite Fregosi->Puig territory, to say nothing of The Gardenhire-Ashford Gap (which sounds like a chapter in Ken Burns' Civil War that featured particularly engaging essaying from Shelby Foote.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 I think the greater concern with Vientos right now has been his strikeout rate. But I'm a-guessing we'll see him soonly enough.

But I'm a-guessing we'll see him soonly enough.true enough, but Sandy's never seemed like strikeouts bother him unless it's from swinging wildly out of the "zone"...Nimmo used to K a lot while drawing walks and taking a lot of called strikes but it was fine because of his OBP and his "chase rate" was good...not sure how Vientos strikeouts breakdown, whether he swings wildly a lot or whether he gets a lot of called strikes...it seems like his K rates have improved in the past several weeks...since July 22 (23 games), he's got a .398 batting average with a 1.158 OPS, 18 K's in 98 Plate Appearances (not great, but improved, plus power hitters tend to get more than the normal share of K's, walks ang GIDP's)...https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=viento000mar&type=bgl&year=2022https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=viento000mar&type=bgl&year=2022
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 Yeah, as I said, I'm behind him.I guess the September 1 post-season roster deadline has been pushed back a few games this season, but he has to get a callup in the next weekish to be eligible. The only problem with that is that (I think) they are pretty much out of players with options, and virtually all their backenders and reserves right now are veterans who would have to go through waivers.A key exception is Baty, so if they can send Baty down a day or two before the deadline, call up Vientos, and recall Batyman as soon as the rosters expand, it should give them some good options.
vtmet7 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 kind of interesting that Escobar is having a rehab assignment tonight as a shortstop, not as a third baseman...when he comes back, will he be the backup SS/2B while splitting time with Baty at 3rd? (Escobar hits LHP better, Baty is a Lefty)...including Escobar's experience at 3rd, his MLB experience at other positions:3B: 5612 innings;shortstop: 2551 innings;2B: 908 innings;OF: 275 innings (with time spent in all 3 OF positions);1B: 126 innings;Catcher: 1 inning;Pitcher: 1 inning; He played all infield positions in 2021
