G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Jeff McNeil has shed his "just happy to be here" No. 68 and will report to Spring Training as a legit major leaguer wearing No. 6. Pat Roessler fans are stunned by the disrespect.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Is Ben Grimm live on site at the protests? Maybe he has some images of the Roessler fans to share with us.My heart skipped a beat when I saw the thread title. I thought for a second he had been traded.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 The protesters (male and female!) painted pictures of Pat Roessler on their chests but it's too cold today and they're wearing coats and shirts over the images.Sorry!

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 6, for the number of positions that he'll play in '19.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Saw they have a whole rash of new unis assigned

ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 I thought we got Uncle Floyd and Oogie
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Here's the http://www.mbtn.net/?p=3040whole numerical roster. Only vacancies are 0, 25, 69 and 85-99.Espinosa presumably gets 25.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Cano is going to wear 24, isn't he? I like Alonso as 20.And just give somebody number 8 already. They didn't retire it when Carter went into the Hall of Fame. They didn't retire it when he got sick. And they didn't retire it when he died. Unless they're holding it for the return of Dave Gallagher, they might as well give it to somebody. It may have to wait until they get a prominent player who wore 8 elsewhere.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Yeah I fixed that 24 thing!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 The way to get past the awkwardness of re-issuing semi-retired numbers is to give the players in question another honor that perpetuates their memory. Name the centerfield gate or something (is there a centerfield gate?) after Willie Mays and the St. Lucie ballpark after Gary Carter. Get the blessing of the family, hold a ceremony, and there's no uproar when Patrick Mazeika or Will Toffey or somebody shows up in #8.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Damn, when I saw Channel 68, the first thing I thought of was Uncle Floyd.

Why should the Mets retire his number, or heavens to Betsy, name a stadium after him? If I were Keith Hernandez or Jerry Koosman, I'd be up the wall and livid over this nonsensical talk that never goes away. I mean, we're talking about a guy that, with hindsight, we know was more or less done by 1987.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Hey, you won't hear a word from me if Toffey gets 8 tomorrow.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Going from 68 to 6 is the numerical change OF A COWARD
