SMILE HIGH

Newsday, June 19, 2018.

Brandon Nimmo hits two home runs as the Mets beat the Rockies in Denver.

Rainin is such a pointless cover. It says something about the other covers that it's made it this far.

I like Smile High though. I could get behind Nimmo being the TCD cover boy for 2018.

Can Smile High win in a shutout?

I like the coloring in the News cover as well as the Paul Shaffer reference but Nimmo's smile makes that cover my choice.

I'll be a heretic and go with RAINING METS over SMILE HIGH even in a losing cause. The latter is clever enough, but the former perfectly captured the mood and the moment. I didn't like the result of that day's game, but I appreciate the back page it left behind.

No way! Even the headline fails! If we are staying within parameters of the pun, "It's Rainin' Mets" would imply that there are good Mets all over the place. So many so that it's overwhelming.

This headline basically means, it's raining (literally). And we're the Mets.

It's almost like the Sports Editor (I'm old enough to remember when there was such a thing) realized that the headline didn't make sense, and felt the need to add the "Sky is Falling" part.

I think it's implying that the Mets are falling like raindrops, with a succession of injuries.

The headline isn't in the spirit of the song that inspired it, which is about men raining down from the skies like manna from heaven.

It's raining men, hallelujah, it's raining men, amen

I'm gonna go out to run and let myself get

Absolutely soaking wet

It's raining men, hallelujah

It's raining men, every specimen

Tall, blonde, dark and lean

Rough and tough and strong and mean

I love Smile High. A happy Nimmo makes everything better, like bacon or brown sugar.

I thought about the injury thing too. But it only mentions Cespedes getting hurt. Maybe at the time it was understood that the Mets were dropping like flies, but I don't remember all the events around it. Either way, a good subheadline could have said "Cespedes joins parade of injured Mets" or something like that.

I never understood the double entendre of "Absolutely soaking wet" until right now.

My take, which happens to be the correct one btw, is that ITS RAINING METS is just a way of saying "When It Rains, It Pours" as a means of collecting all the bad news besetting the club while showing a picture of them taking cover in a soaked dugout.

And by soaked dugout I mean...

INTO EACH LIFE,

A LITTLE METS

MUST FALL

would have been too long, but that's how I took IT'S RAINING METS.

Not mentioned on back page, perhaps because it wasn't clear that it was a serious injury, this was also the game when Lagares went out for the year. Very gloomy day.

Brandon Nimmo's smile is apparently more dazzling than a rain delay. Newsday's SMILE HIGH has defeated IT'S RAININ' METS and completes our Final Four. As in each of the previous two years, the Final Four consists of two covers from the Daily News and one each from the Post and Newsday. (In 2015, we had three Daily News covers and one from the Post.)
