kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 Pulling for a SMILE HIGH landslide.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Author Posted January 8, 2019 It looks like SMILE HIGH will be my favorite going forward, now that the two Wilmer covers are on the brink.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 Rainin is such a pointless cover. It says something about the other covers that it's made it this far.I like Smile High though. I could get behind Nimmo being the TCD cover boy for 2018. Can Smile High win in a shutout?

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 I like the coloring in the News cover as well as the Paul Shaffer reference but Nimmo's smile makes that cover my choice.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Author Posted January 8, 2019 Can Smile High win in a shutout? There has only been one shutout in TCD history, and that was in the second round in 2016, when Newsday's 11th HEAVEN won all 15 votes against the Daily News' ALL TOO FAMILIA.http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2016/20160923_NSD_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2016/20161006_NYDN_02.jpg>
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 Nimmo's hard to vote against, but I love the song "It's Raining Men" for wedding reception purposes, so it got my vote.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 And all fans of 11th Heaven raise their glasses in celebration.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 I'll be a heretic and go with RAINING METS over SMILE HIGH even in a losing cause. The latter is clever enough, but the former perfectly captured the mood and the moment. I didn't like the result of that day's game, but I appreciate the back page it left behind.

Even the headline fails! If we are staying within parameters of the pun, "It's Rainin' Mets" would imply that there are good Mets all over the place. So many so that it's overwhelming. batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 I dont get that cover either. Maybe if there was a comma after "Rainin'", it'd make more sense, but only a tiny bit more.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 It's almost like the Sports Editor (I'm old enough to remember when there was such a thing) realized that the headline didn't make sense, and felt the need to add the "Sky is Falling" part.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2019 Author Posted January 9, 2019 I think it's implying that the Mets are falling like raindrops, with a succession of injuries. The headline isn't in the spirit of the song that inspired it, which is about men raining down from the skies like manna from heaven. It's raining men, hallelujah, it's raining men, amenI'm gonna go out to run and let myself getAbsolutely soaking wetIt's raining men, hallelujahIt's raining men, every specimenTall, blonde, dark and leanRough and tough and strong and mean
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 I love Smile High. A happy Nimmo makes everything better, like bacon or brown sugar.

But it only mentions Cespedes getting hurt. Maybe at the time it was understood that the Mets were dropping like flies, but I don't remember all the events around it. Either way, a good subheadline could have said "Cespedes joins parade of injured Mets" or something like that.I never understood the double entendre of "Absolutely soaking wet" until right now.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2019 Posted January 9, 2019 My take, which happens to be the correct one btw, is that ITS RAINING METS is just a way of saying "When It Rains, It Pours" as a means of collecting all the bad news besetting the club while showing a picture of them taking cover in a soaked dugout. And by soaked dugout I mean...

Very gloomy day.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2019 Author Posted January 15, 2019 http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/images/2018/4-04w.jpg>Brandon Nimmo's smile is apparently more dazzling than a rain delay. Newsday's SMILE HIGH has defeated IT'S RAININ' METS and completes our Final Four. As in each of the previous two years, the Final Four consists of two covers from the Daily News and one each from the Post and Newsday. (In 2015, we had three Daily News covers and one from the Post.)
