Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 Hey, kids, is your favorite Met one of the top 100 players at his position?OF ALL TIME?!Well, maybe and maybe not. But, I figured, Fangraphs should have an opinion. So I looked at how they ranked the top 100 recipients of their proprietary stat of fWAR. Hey, it's not the last word on anything, but it's Fangraphs' word, and they're pretty smart over there.If you'd like to play please guess which Mets fill the blanks below.RULEZ and REGULASHUNZ1) One guess per post, no consecutive guessing.2) WHEN you guess, PLEASE say which slot you're guessing. Like: "The number 38 all-time shortstop must be Tim Bogar."3) You get 300 points for a correct guess, minus the number of slots you miss. So if you say. "The 36th all-time leftfielder is Joe Shlabotnik," and Joe is on the list, but at 86th, rather than 36, you get 250 points.4) Minus 100 points for an incorrect guess.5) BONUS: A handful of guys are ranked at more than one position, which you may notice by the same fWAR score appearing on more than one list. I don't know how those nudniks at Fangraphs divided things up. It's not like guys who switched positions mid-career have their scores broken up. They'll have the same score on two lists. IF YOU WANT TO SCORE BIG POINTS, feel free to guess one guy at multiple positions, like "Jack Armstrong is the #11 pitcher AND the #78 rightfielder." You can only score big if you invoke it as a double guess.Guess away.Starting Pitchers6) ___________________: 107.511) ___________________: 92.815) ___________________: 82.824) ___________________: 74.835) ___________________: 66.939) ___________________: 65.044) ___________________: 66.146) ___________________: 60.952) ___________________: 58.455) ___________________: 56.5T60) ___________________: 55.7T62) ___________________: 55.284) ___________________: 51.085) ___________________: 50.6Relief Pitchers6) ___________________: 24.119) ___________________: 16.521) ___________________: 16.134) ___________________: 14.2T36) ___________________: 14.1T36) ___________________: 14.138) ___________________: 14.040) ___________________: 13.8T43) ___________________: 12.9T51) ___________________: 12.055) ___________________: 11.6T72) ___________________: 10.680) ___________________: 10.3T84) ___________________: 10.0T86) ___________________: 9.9T86) ___________________: 9.9T96) ___________________: 9.3Catchers2) ___________________: 69.4T5) ___________________: 63.7T5) ___________________: 63.77) ___________________: 62.392) ___________________: 18.9First Basemen12) ___________________: 72.022) ___________________: 62.327) ___________________: 59.429) ___________________: 57.351) ___________________: 44.257) ___________________: 42.1T65) ___________________: 36.5T86) ___________________: 31.1Second Basemen11) ___________________: 63.614) ___________________: 62.018) ___________________: 56.127) ___________________: 46.633) ___________________: 42.061) ___________________: 30.169) ___________________: 28.4T70) ___________________: 28.3T80) ___________________: 24.090) ___________________: 22.997) ___________________: 21.2Third Basemen21) ___________________: 56.725) ___________________: 54.827) ___________________: 52.3T61) ___________________: 35.774) ___________________: 32.780) ___________________: 31.487) ___________________: 30.1ShortstopsT30) ___________________: 44.2T30) ___________________: 44.232) ___________________: 43.535) ___________________: 42.049) ___________________: 37.963) ___________________: 31.467) ___________________: 30.3T91) ___________________: 25.497) ___________________: 24.5Left Fielders5) ___________________: 106.338) ___________________: 47.740) ___________________: 47.173) ___________________: 33.392) ___________________: 29.6100) ___________________: 27.6Center Fielders1) ___________________: 149.99) ___________________: 68.115) ___________________: 63.519) ___________________: 57.426) ___________________: 50.731) ___________________: 48.952) ___________________: 42.259) ___________________: 40.360) ___________________: 40.296) ___________________: 28.1Right Fielders17) ___________________: 62.121) ___________________: 59.638) ___________________: 47.835) ___________________: 48.537) ___________________: 47.943) ___________________: 44.452) ___________________: 41.577) ___________________: 34.886) ___________________: 32.7

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 I think there's a glitch in your scoring method. If Tim Foli, say, is the #5 pitcher, and a contestant guesses Tim Foli as the # 15 pitcher, you credit that as a correct score and award 290 points, even though the guess is really wrong or partially correct, at best. But the points you award gives away the correct answer. Anyone can now figure that Foli is either 5 or 25.

Anyone can now figure that Foli is either 5 or 25.Well, the idea is that Foli comes off the board.I'm holding off on Piazza, though, until our guesser follows up with a slot.Man, but Foli could pitch. Also, as far as penalties, subtracting 100 for an outright miss is harsh. If you guess that Angel Berroa is #98, but it turns out he's #103, you'll only get docked five points.I'll say one of the #5 catchers is Gary Carter. The Kid, amazingly, is still hot tonight. Fangraphs has him at #2.Gary Carter---C:5A minute too late. Maybe seconds. No penalty strokes, though.Billy Wagner - reliever #11#11 isn't even a Metly slot. (It's Lindy McDaniel's, by the way.)
