Yeah, kinda crappily worded. I'm sure he's thinking the Mets have little incentive to play hardball and keep Bautista. But if JoeyBats can only net a non-prospect, minor league roster-filler kinda guy in return, then Phuck the Phils.

I agree. We still have baseball to play. To give away a player just to give him away doesn't make sense. It's not like they'd be saving a ton of money. If he's producing and is good working with the young players, there is value in having him here.

They need to clear space in the OF and a slot on the roster (even though September 1 is near) for Nimmo.

If they don't move Bautista, they can easily clear space by removing one of their three catchers or 29 relievers.

I read they will have until sometime today to finalize the deal.
Until then, this thread feels creepy, like grabbing the shovel while the body still has a pulse.

It is done. No word yet on the return. I'm guessing "slot money".

Breaking news!

TORONTO, Aug. 28, 2018 /CNW/ - Endy announced today that Jose Bautista will join the team as an investor in the company. The former Toronto Blue Jays icon and six-time MLB All-Star pursued an investment in Endy after sleeping on, and falling in love with, the award-winning Endy Mattress while playing in Toronto. Bautista, an athlete, investor, and philanthropist, knew he had to get involved with the company when he learned more about its mission: to help Canadians get a better night's sleep, including those who need it most.

Yeah, but if the Phillies want him, the Mets should try to get the most value they can from him, rather than give him away for nothing.

I'd hope that they could at least get an Endy Mattress.

His career comps include a surprising number of lefthanded batters, a handful of fellow Met rightfielders, and at least one guy who, like he was previously, had been a Met only on paper.

Similar Batters Through 36

  1. Jeromy Burnitz (937.4)
  2. Greg Vaughn (922.9)
  3. Ron Gant (921.6)
  4. Darryl Strawberry (917.5)
  5. Jay Buhner (900.4)
  6. David Justice (900.0)
  7. Curtis Granderson (899.3)
  8. Tim Salmon (894.5)
  9. Reggie Sanders (888.7)
  10. Roy Sievers (882.7)

He'd probably have to reverse course and get at least one more impressive season to get more than a smidgen of Hall of Fame votes, and at least two more impressive seasons to get serious consideration.
