I'm shocked (and happily surprised) at how quickly the Mets pulled the trigger on this. It's a damn shame it came to this, but seems at every angle the right move.

Holy Memories of Matt Harvey, Batman!
I have to say, I really thought he had through May.

Big opportunities for the local papers to clinch the 2018 Tabloid Cover Challenge tomorrow morning.

The Mets had no alternative after he declined an assignment to the minors. But why? Did Boras tell him that he'll be picked up by another team and in the rotation within a week? He's on the verge of free agency so perhaps this would have been a good time to be a good soldier and pitch in the minors for awhile.

Turn his life around? Harvey's trajectory is appearing on a reality TV show with D list celebs like Tia Tequila and then trying to score a date with a Kardashian.

He may end up in the Mets minors yet.

I'm guessing he won't, but we'll see.

It's the best thing for him, really. A guaranteed start every five days. Where's he gonna get that now? He's so stupid and egotistical.

Plus, him and Tebow can start an Up with People tribute band.

First time in years that the team went with a baseball decision which ignored the financial end.

Harvey is useless right now; some time in the minors is his only hope.

If another team does sign him, you can bet it'll be to a minor league contract, anyway. Another in a long line of poor decisions by Harvey.

DiComo is tweeting his ass off right now. He said Mickey wanted Harv to rebuild himself in the minors like Cliff Lee and Roy Halliday but Harv refused. Sandy pretty sure someone will take a shot on Harvey and a trade will get worked out.

Daily News reporting that (1) this came after Hatt Marvey refused a minor league assignment and (2) that Sandy Alderson described it as "the end of an era," which doesn't suggest they're expecting him to reconsider the minor league idea if he goes through waivers.

OE: What ABNS said.

What's Matt Harvey worth, I wonder? Depends if there is any kind of market and I would bet there is more than 1 team interested. I bet we get a high-ceiling, but super raw 19-year old long shot, or like a 25-year old AA player who probably already shoulda made it.

I doubt that a trade will be made. Whoever trades for Harvey will owe him something like $5 million. I expect teams would rather wait until he's released outright and then they can pay him the major-league minimum.

Yeah, you're prob right, although my heart tells me the Rangers try to get him. Maybe they don't wanna bid against 5 teams looking to sign him at the minimum and are willing to make a small trade. Sad that the Matt Harvey era ends with me hoping we can land an afterthought PTBNL type guy for him.

I suppose a trade can happen if the Mets agree to pay a big chunk of the remaining salary. And why shouldn't they? They're going to have to eat it anyway so they might as well get something in return.

Not the way I foresaw his Mets tenure ending some three years or so ago. I wouldn't have foreseen completely agreeing that it had to be done, either.

Boras on why Harvey refused a minor league assignment:

“Going into a new organization, you can map out an approach,” Boras said. “Once you are sent to the minors by the Mets, they have total control of how long you are there. There is no forecast. It is, ‘We will see how you do.’ ”

Wanting to see how he does?! What assholes, those Mets!

The Mets did the right move, but most people wouldn't accept a demotion if there is any chance that one of the remaining 29 teams will take a flier on them at the big league level.

The Mets are right. And Boras is right. it is no longer in either party's best interest for Harvey to be a Met

Steve Traschel came down to AAA and fixed it. I watched him throw a seven inning no hitter here in Syracuse. Good riddance to Harv, he doesn't want to fix it for this franchise, then hit the bricks.

Much like Troy McClure, he's now a washed up superstar, he can bang washed up supermodels, like that 93 year old dead lady that the scabies ate up.

He didn't want to try to fix his problems in the minors.
His ego is the only thing he has that is larger than his ERA.
Bye!

Yeah, Splat Harvey cover could go far this year.

I don't know, for some reason this 'morning after' I find my self in some
kind of disturbed metfunk over how this saga all played out and ended.

There's something to be said for dumping your underperforming malcontent while you're winning. The Mets released George Foster in the midst of a three game sweep of the Cubs at Wrigley, including a doubleheader sweep.

But as this is a DFA following a refused minor league assignment, rather than an outright release, the timing is a somewhat trickier.
