Thirteen months ago, the talk was all Andrew-this and McCutchen-that, and, well, though nothing came of it, it looks like he never fell off the Mets' radar.

But also, sadly, a reflection of how far Mattman has fallen. I hope this kind of talk motivates Matt, as opposed to making him a sulking sissyboy.

Pirates don't seem to be in "win now" mode, so I don't see what Harvey would do for them.

More likely Nimmo/Lagares would be going the other way. Maybe Dom Smith.

McCutchen had good overall numbers last year, but he was super streaky. Basically just went nutty in June and July but was pretty pedestrian (or even pretty bad) the rest of the year. I'd be on board with this but we shouldn't give up too much for this guy.

He's also not the centerfielder he was, and it created a political to-do when it was suggested that he might be moved to a corner.

He wouldn't have the sort of equity with a new team to dictate where he'd play. But that wouldn't be much of an issue anyhow in Metland, where they've spent much of the last two years forcing a corner outfielder into center.

Really love McCutchen...would love him as a Met.

However, I also love the Pirates and don't wish Harvey on them. Also I want McCutchen to stay a Pirate. Marte is an excellent player and the fans adore them both, but Marte left them down last year and it's a good thing McCutchen was still there. Not sure what the Pirates have in mind.

all the McCutchen talk is basically that it's going nowhere though, and that the Mets might prefer a FA. And somehow writers fail to mention Lorenzo Cain when 'reporting' this.

Reporting on a story that somebody else broke and giving the original scoop as your source is still reporting.

Sharing in the report that talks "don't have much traction" and that the Mets "might prefer a free agent" is providing context. You're complaining that there's no context at the same time you're complaining that the context is so mitigating as to discredit the lede.

Meanwhile, poor Ashie is dying for a rumor. He finally gets one and you hate on it coming and going.

I'd be very happy to get him, and would figure we have the pitching to trade for it (Harv, matz, Gsellman, Lugo, Wheely etc). If they also want a prospect they can have one of ours.

I've long thought the Mets ought to be looking for guys by trade vs. Free Agency. It just works better from a Wilpon standpoint.

If we're 9 games out in July, there's a tasty trade chip too.

there have been dozens of these if he was looking. And they're all the same. it's click-baity column-filling reporting. the worst kind. "The Mets checked to see if McCutchen's cost has changed. It hadn't." This thread could've been posted exactly as is without the link and it'd change nothing.

Why do you hate Ashie?

I'm wearied by continued reports that X team (the Mets) can't trade for big league talent because they don't have the prospects. As if their players graduating to the majors and not appearing on prospect lists suddenly makes them untradeable.

Every team has enough talent to trade for any player in the league, just about. It may not match up as a good deal, but the idea that a trade is suddenly out of the question is absurd.

He's no longer viable in center. He was worth 2.5 WAR in a full season, Lagares was worth 1.8 WAR in slightly more than half. If you go get somebody, make sure he makes the team better.

He may not be quite the All-Star stud he once was, but I wouldn't mind adding McCutchen's bat to the line up, assuming the price isn't too steep.

I don't expect the Mets are willing to commit the money that it would take to add a significant free agent to the line up, so I believe a trade is the team's most likely means of improving during the off season.
