  1. I've got no issue with Gary. No denying that he's got a face for radio but other than that.
  2. Valadius wrote: soupy - the Angels bought out Edison's naming rights a few years ago. It's just Angel Stadium now. I sit corrected.
  3. Gwreck wrote: ="soupcan"]Ironically, its a safety issue. Avoids pile-ups at the bottom when so many people are exiting at the same time. Really? The escalators at Giants Stadium go down after the game just fine. No problems there. I think the difference is that at Giants Stadium its just one escalator with a large space at the bottom to walk away as opposed to series' of connected escalators at the Garden and Shea. Does that make sense?
  4. Why Are People Booing? -Slow Start -Carryover from last year (or maybe not) -Poor in-game execution -Loutishness, Oafishness, Philistinism, Lummoxishness -Overpaid athletes, overcharged fans -Ignorant fans -Generation of Stupid Mooks -Team having lousy sense of self Anything else before I shoot this off to Keith and Gary?
  5. HahnSolo wrote: Also, I always wondered about the escalators, both at Shea and in the Garden. Why did they only go up? Couldn't they reverse them for after the game? Ironically, its a safety issue. Avoids pile-ups at the bottom when so many people are exiting at the same time.
  6. Valadius wrote: I agree, the progression of corporate advertising needs to be halted. And the Mets didn't need to sell the naming rights. We're in the upper echelon of teams that don't need to sell naming rights. I mean, which teams have the highest payrolls? The Mets, MFYs, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels, and Cubs come to mind. And not a single one of those teams currently play in a stadium that has sold its naming rights. The Mets just didn't need it. Especially not to a corporation whose name rhymes with 'shitty'. right Vlad? Yankees - Wanna bet that the field will have a corporate name when all is said and done? Addidas Field at Yankee Stadium for instance. Angels - Edison Field - it's an energy company I believe. Cubs - Once the team and stadium are sold Wrigley will have a sponsor. Red Sox and Dodgers will not be far behind. Too much money at stake.
  7. ="AG/DC"]So, in the Shea passings file, I remember a similar fall in 1986 (a college kid, I think) Good memory Edgy. New York Post: TRAGEDY AT SHEA By ERIN CALABRESE and PERRY CHIARAMONTE April 16, 2008 -- A Mets fan leaving the game last night lost his balance while descending an escalator at Shea Stadium and plummeted two stories to his death - as his two young daughters watched in horror, authorities said. Antonio Narainasami, 36, of Brooklyn, was with several other relatives on a family outing, when the tragedy took place around 10 p.m. in Section A near left field. At home was the fan's wife, who is pregnant with their third child. The victim, a Guyanese native, who lived in Cypress Hills and worked in air conditioning repair and installation, was taken to New York Hospital Queens, where he was pronounced dead. His cousin, Kevin Prashad, who was there, said Narainasami had been walking down the escalator, which was turned off. "He lost his footing somehow and then he went over the railing," said Prashad, 28. "He had his kids with him - they were walking right behind him. "We saw his whole body go over the side. There's no explanation for what happened there. It's like a nightmare." But one police source said authorities are looking into the possibility the victim may have been sliding on the rubber railing. "We were just on a night out to Shea Stadium - we're all diehard Mets fans, the whole family," Prashad said. Added Vinnie Narainasami, another cousin: "He was one of the best guys I've ever known," noting Narainasami was "really excited" about the game because "it's his favorite team." That cousin said Narainasami was a team captain in the Legend Cricket Club. "We have been advised of a tragic accident that resulted in the death of a fan attending tonight's game," said a statement from the Mets. "The Mets, the City Parks Department and the New York Police Department are investigating the incident. Our deepest and heartfelt condolences go out to the fan's family." The game celebrated Jackie Robinson Day, the 61st anniversary of the Brooklyn Dodger great breaking the major league color barrier. In New York, two other fans have died at baseball games - both of them were sitting on the railings of escalators. In May 1985, Mark Leddy, 21, of Yonkers, fell 100 feet off an escalator at Shea. And in April 1999, a 37-year-old man fell more than 90 feet to his death at Yankee Stadium. Such accidents, however, are a rarity at ballparks - one 2003 study published in the baseball journal "Nine" reported about 35 deaths from 1900 to 2000. Additional reporting by Cathy Burke, Larry Celona and Mark Hale
  8. Have we collectively lost our minds? No, because I haven't. Why are the people that are booing booing? I think there are a lot of reasons. Keith and Gary touched on it a bit last night but they missed a lot. Gary mentioned salaries and escalating costs to the fan. Keith however dismissed that saying that "the casual fan is the one that boos and casual fans attend 10-15 games a year." Casual fans attend 10-15 games a year? Keith obviously has no concept as to what a casual fan is and how much it costs to attend that many games. They attributed most of it to the proliferation of the sportstalk radio and the internet. Giving fans more outlets to express their frustration which they said, makes the frustrated fan feel emboldened to gripe. I think that adds to it but I believe that a HUGE reason is money. The salaries are astronomical, the costs of going to a game are outrageous and everything associated with the game (food, souvenirs, apparel, cable TV) is designed to extract every last cent that they can out of you. So when a $10,000,000.00 per year player or $200,000,000.00 team fails in a certain situation, the fan who has been gouged mercilessily to be in the park feels cheated and reacts accordingly. I would also say that most fans aren't very sophisticated about the intricacies of the game and don't understand that a bloop double is not necessarily the pitcher's fault. I think that last season's collapse is also a factor.
  9. Dead guy's family's story is that he was just walking down the escalator, lost his footing and fell over the side. Police are speculating that he was sliding down the rubber railing and lost his balance. I'm tending towards the the cops theory on this.

  13. I met Ron Hodges at a Met game when I was 12 or so. He was really nice to me and spoke in a slow, friendly southern drawl. Doug Flynn's my all-time fave but #42 is right up there.

  20. Been to 2 games this year. Opening Day and today. I'm 0-2. 2 games, 2 leads blown, 2 losses. On the plus side I was with all three of my kids and they got to sing 'Take Me OUt To The Ballgame' on Diamondvision. Other than that...
  21. Thanks for the nice wishes for my dad guys. Scott gave us all major ajita in '86 and if the Astros had won, having this news confirmed now (not that Gary Carter and the rest of us didn't already KNOW) would've just eaten me alive I think. If I get the chance to shake the guy's hand I'll press him a bit more on the jersey question and I'll definitely bring up the bra thing.
  22. Sorry this took so long - My dad has been dealing with some health issues so the Craig stuff got put on the backburner for a while. Just heard yesterday: Edgy DC wrote: Three words: Did Scott cheat? YES!! He definitely cheated. He would glue a small circle of sand paper to the palm of his glove hand. When the catcher threw the ball back to him, he'd remove the glove and rub up the ball with both hands, scuffing it in the process. When umps would check him, somehow he'd peel the sandpaper off his palm and stick it in his shirt. Craig said he never got caught because Scott was so good at professing his innocence that the umpires believed him every time. ="John Cougar Lunchbucket"]Ask him what he recalls about swapping jerseys with Tracy Stallard in a failed attempt to end his losing streak in 1963. And when he finally broke his streak wearing No. 13, did he wear it for the rest of the year? He said he remembered swapping the numbers but did not recall much else about it unfortunately. I have to go out to San Diego week after this coming one, and dad said he would try to introduce me to Craig. If he does I'll bring up the jersey question again as well as as Gwreck's: ="Gwreck"]Didn't Roger Craig once miss a start because he cut his hand on his ladyfriend's bra?
  23. I walked by the original Rusty's on Third Ave. once (which at some point later became an E.J.s Luncheonette) and sitting at a table in the window was Rusty, Keith and Darling. There are plenty of sportsbars to go to to see a game. I've never been turned down when I've asked a bartender to put the Mets game on. If you are looking for a Mets themed place then I guess there's a void out there but really is that a need?
