seawolf17 wrote: Hey y'all. I want to pick up the first Strat-O-Matic card of Stony Brook alum Tom Koehler, which I'm assuming will be in the Marlins set this year. But I don't need to buy the whole game again, and I could just go on eBay and buy it standalone, but I think it'd be more fun to get a group of people together and split the purchase and break up the teams. So if I can corral up five other people, for example, we'd get six teams each. Anyone interested? Might be interested. I don't play this these days but I may start. I'll get back to you.

General All Purpose Baseball Card Thread

Like the Cliff Johnson thing, I've been collecting up Donn Clendenon cards, looking for one in which he isn't sneering like he wants to hit you with his bat. Go google/look thru Donns cards. He always looks angry. Does the Baseball Card Theater guy really blow all his cards off the table like that or is it an effect? -

General Mets Miscellaneous Questions 2014

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Murphy was said to have taken the field as a coach following Westrum's late-season resignation but I've never seen a photo of him in uniform and don't know his number. It's become common more recently to have staff in addition to players up when rosters expand in September. I am less inclined to consider them to be actual team staff even though they get uniforms and stuff. Hmm. Thanks JCL. Most interesting. I'm doing a photoshop parody of the Sgt Pepper album cover with all the 1967 Mets. I wanted Murphy in it somehow. Man, a pic in uni would have been awesome- jeeze, even a color pic of him in civies would have done. Id'a stuck that in there. Instead I used Murphs head bust from the collection of Met hall of famers and made him a statue. That'll have to do. We have to find out what his number was! That would be a major coup. -
General Mets Miscellaneous Questions 2014
Zvon replied to stevejrogers's topic in New York Mets Talk
In 1967 the UMDB has Johnny Murphy listed as a Met coach (as well as vice pres of the team). Did Murphy ever really suit up and coach on the field? What is the story behind him being listed as a coach? Are there pictures of him in uniform? -

I have a question. Not sure where to post it (don't wanna start a thread for it). It concerns info my card site so I'll ask here. In 1967 the UMDB has Johnny Murphy listed as a Met coach (as well as vice pres of the team). Did Murphy ever really suit up and coach on the field? What is the story behind him being listed as a coach? Are there pictures of him in uniform? Any info would be helpful. -

I've read studies on this before and, IIRC, it's tough to make the case for more than a few dozen in total. That's interesting. Boy, you add a couple dozen to 660 and you are getting pretty close to 700. Wonder what it would have been like if it had been him and not Aaron chasing Ruth -- or him AND Aaron chasing Ruth! It was he and Aaron chasing Ruth, and when I became a fan of the game it was Mays who was pegged to pass him (circa 68-69), not Aaron. But Willie fluttered out of the game and Hank kept sluggin'. Henry won the last few laps of that race.

Two Mets episodes that come to mind: 1965: A pair of early-season, late-inning comebacks whose parameters wouldn't reappear in Met annals until 2011. The original duo hinged on a huge hit by Danny Napoleon, leading to Casey Stengel's declaration of "Viva La France" in the clubhouse. 1969: These two defensive half-innings at the back end of August: GIANTS 8TH: GASPAR REPLACED SHAMSKY (PLAYING LF); Marshall lined to second; Dietz walked; Lanier singled to center [Dietz to second]; Perry reached on an error by Boswell [Dietz to third, Lanier to second]; TAYLOR REPLACED CARDWELL (PITCHING); DAVENPORT BATTED FOR MASON; HENDERSON RAN FOR DIETZ; Davenport hit into a double play (second to first to catcher) [Henderson out at home]; Ken Boswell caught the popup and threw toward HP while Ken Henderson was retreating to 3B; the throw hit 1B coach Wes Westrum; Donn Clendenon retrieved the ball to throw out Henderson who crashed into Jerry Grote; 0 R, 1 H, 1 E, 2 LOB. Mets 2, Giants 2. GIANTS 9TH: WEIS REPLACED JONES (PLAYING SS); MCGRAW REPLACED MARTIN (PITCHING); Hunt lined to third; Burda singled to left; McCovey doubled to left [burda out at home (left to first to catcher), McCovey out at third (catcher to third)]; Big shift for Willie McCovey who sliced double down LF line; Jerry Grote waited casually at HP, pretending no throw was coming, then lunged at last moment to tag Bob Burda; Grote rolled the ball to the mound, thinking there were 3 outs; Donn Clendenon retrieved the ball; 0 R, 2 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Mets 2, Giants 2. Mets won in extras, stayed within four of Cubs. Westrum was a first base coach on the '69 squad at some point?

Vic Sage wrote: whatever value we may or may not ascribe to Drew, the notion that the $3.8m (edit: $3.2m; $600K guaranteed) the Mets would save by releasing Ike would be necessary in order to make that acquisition, is truly galling. When Milwaukee and Pitt are the "rich teams" looking to exploit our poverty-stricken franchise by waiting for us to give up on $4m players because they're too "expensive", we're looking at systemic problems.Vic Sage wrote: why on earth would they just release him? It's not like production by Duda and Satin have made Ike irrelevant... those guys haven't produced much either, and neither has shown the ability to date to hit 32 HRs and drive in 90r in the majors. And its not like we'd lose Duda if we just sent him down; he has options. I don't know what the baseball rationale is for a move like this. It seems to me that cutting Ike for nothing to anoint Duda and save $3m would be an indicator of a larger systemic problem. I also suffer from this systematic problem, premature galling. ^ That says it all.

Who Am I? & The Dedication & Re-creation of Butterball Field
Zvon replied to batmagadanleadoff's topic in New York Mets Talk
Some new old pics of Butterball. I think. I looked last 10 pages back and didn't see these up here yet. I should have noted the year. IIRC 1956. Not sure which mound this would be and those trees look awfully big. I think the next ones confirm its Butterball though. Or, actually, the first base area of Clendenon Field with Butterball in the distance. Again, looks like more trees goin on back there. That should be Crystal Lake beyond. Look at the cars, man. Look at those cars! All shiny and new. Now the field in the distance does not look like a full infield setup. Maybe at this time that was just a big patch of dirt with a batting cage. I think this was before Butterball was a complete field, tho the perspective might just make it look that way. A color look at the parking lot and that green structure. Again, bigger looking trees in the direct backround. Is that a garden back there? I don't think the green structure was part of the facility then. And it probably was torn down for the clubhouse. I don't see the water fountain. That bench should be close to the area Stengels' bench ended up, clubhouse behind it. Again, the perspective could be messin' with me. Wish we could see more to the left where the fence is. -
If he hit the back of his helmet with the bat (I can't tell) that's a trifecta.

Not 2013 but Mets:Dickey. Wow, coloring the ball like that really shows the movement. That is wacky!

The One Pronged Shea Stadium Survey for a Snowy Day
Zvon replied to batmagadanleadoff's topic in New York Mets Talk
It being coooold outside I'll sandwich two together, both experiences involving cooooold. Jets game 1968. Sat in the mezz section and froze so bad I thought I would never feel my extremities again. Went with my buddy and his dad. We had blankets and hot cocoa and layers and layers of cloths. Still froze my ass off. Mets playoffs, 1988. Game 5. What was happening on the field was bad enough (freakin Gibson smacks a homer, makes a diving catch looking like a fish flopping out of water) but the cooooold: We sat in the last row of a mezz section out towards right. There was a, you couldn't simply call it a breeze, a cold rush of wind that would blow right up our backs and we were freezing and because of the overhang could only see a slice of the game. The cold bothered me much more than the view. -

(Much of it tracked in this here thread.) I had to view the Godzilla cartoon and see how they treated Shea. Not bad, could be worse. I won't bust em for the scoreboard placement and whatnot cause it is Shea, and they call it that. And the dialogue near the end about how the Mets suck (that's why the guy dreamed up a monster to attack Shea, cuz the Mets sucked, lol. He was a fan.) makes it a classic. In this shot the stadium looks most like Shea. These? Not so much. The back of the scoreboard looks close enough. They both knew better than to destroy the scoreboard. That's respect. And then they take it outside and mess with my favorite rendition of our globe on the globe, the Unisphere! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! He broke it. gah! You can't throw anything at Godzilla. He'll turn it into a global weapon of dream creature destruction! Episode on youtube has the wrong name. He did allow us to coin a new word: Valdespin - Verb - to be hit in the groin with a baseball while not wearing a cup. Later 2 new words. Valdesac- noun- the area Jordany was hit in while not wearing a cup. As far as I can see I only ever made one KaBOOM for Valde. Be free Valde KaBOOM. Fly south.

Researching that question, I found out some things I hadn't known about Mr. Bouchee, though I'm not completely positively that he did hit the first Mets pinch-hit hr (just the first one I could find in April of '62). He died early this year, and through searching his obits, I found this detailed explanation of his mysterious "trouble with the law" that marred his promising career with the Phils http://suite101.com/a/morals-conviction-stalled-but-didnt-end-ed-bouchees-mlb-career-a359043 Wow. That's some crazy stuff. Yea, Warren Zevon. I've been Zvon on the web since 1999.

bmfc1 wrote: I see your point Zvon but the Beltran information was from years ago. It's not like he just walked out the door (as with Turner). He just walked back in as far as the press is concerned. This was bound to come up. He could have avoided a confrontational stance. He usually does. I like that he didn't. The Mets owners have been building a glass house for some time now. They should never throw stones. Maybe it is this recent business with Turner that has me all cranky at the team as far as this goes. It was just so unnecessary.
