  1. "HOLY ROLE REVERSALS BRUCE! IT SAYS IN THE CRANEPOOL GAZETTE YOU'VE BEEN BUSTED FOR STEROIDS!" "YES,OLD CHUM. IM A FUGITIVE OF THE LAW NOW. BUT I HAD TO DO THE JUICE. YOU SEE, I DONT HAVE ANY ACTUAL SUPER POWERS." ....but seriously,...thats a sad state of affairs.
  2. The Mets went and met with Billy Wagner at his home, sharing pleasentries and such over dinner. I think they were wooing Wags wife as much as him, lol. They talked "team direction". I like this move....I like it alot. And I find it very hard to believe that Omar and Co. went to Wagners farm and did not mention one word about $$$. But thats what reports indicate. (they are not allowed to for a week or so as the Phils have dibs) The reliever says he will go with the team who has the best chance and is most commited to winning. Not that I care what Wags thinks, but if he chooses the Mets I will be doing a lil off season jig of joy. The new Philly GM, Gillick, is a factor I didnt count on at seasons end. That guy knows baseball and will be a fine GM for the Phils. He will make resigning Wagner his top priority and may make a difference in Wagners mind. But I think we have the edge on the Wagner market right now :)
  3. ="Edgy DC"]]We need a catcher who can throw out baserunners. Id rather have that then a guy who could post big hit numbers. We can afford to field an average hitting hard throwing/good fielding catcher. Cutting down runners should be our major concern from that position for 2006. Why? Why? Based on what? And why? And do we know what the particular weaknesses in Jacobs' game are? Why? So the opposing team scores less runs against us. Why? Cuz we can afford to. And it benefits our pitchers. Based on what? The facts, and baseball as I know it. And why? All of the above. The core of our starting staff are not spring chickens. The less pitches they have to throw, the better. I didnt mention game calling but that would also be a bigger factor for me than a slugging catcher. I think with this Met team a catcher who keeps other teams from stealing bases (as well as doing other catching things well,...block pitches etc.) will make a bigger difference when it comes to winning more games next season. We are never gonna see the likes of a Mike Piazza again, who easily made up for his defensive weakness (ie: not throwing out runners well) with his mighty swing (RBI production). Catcher is a most demanding position thats takes alot out of you and Piazza was one of a kind. No way can you convince me that Jacobs posts the same numbers as catcher as he would as a 1st baseman (whatever those numbers may be for a full season). If we go with Jacobs, we want to get the most possible hit production out of him with the least distraction to allow him to do so. Im sure the Mets know what they are doing and never having Jacobs catch at the major league level, to me, supports that. If Jacobs gets a crack to play full time it should be at 1st base.(and i think he should get that chance) And the Mets should secure a catcher who aids the pitching side of the coin from a defensiive standpoint, as opposed to an offensive one. And these are just my opinions, so just take em as food for thought
  4. The last baseball book I read was THE SUMMER OF '49 by David Halberstam. Even though it covers a time before the Mets existed, I highly recommend it. I know it sounds like a book about the Yankees, but its really so much more. With the airwaves saturated with so much sporting choice, it's hard to imagine how, not that long ago, baseball so completely dominated the landscape and captured imaginations. Given the 1949 season that veteran journalist David Halberstam meticulously recreates, maybe it's not so hard after all. It was a season of great public and personal drama for the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, with the conflict finally resolving itself in a Yankee pennant following a head-to-head showdown on the final day of the season. Each team was led by a star of the highest magnitude: Joe DiMaggio spurred the Yankees despite missing half the season with a foot injury; Ted Williams virtually carried the Sox on his back, missing an unprecedented third Triple Crown by mere decimal points on his batting average. Halberstam focuses much of his narrative on the trials of these two individual sporting giants, adding fine supporting performances by Yogi Berra, Ellis Kinder, Dom DiMaggio, even restaurateur Toots Shoor. Both on and off the field, Halberstam beautifully captures the ethos of a more innocent game that no longer exists, played by heroes far more driven by their pride than by their salaries. read a preview here http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0380710757/ref=sib_dp_pt/002-6137059-9875220#reader-page

  23. Vizciano was the one who ended that game,...now officially the old record for longest game time wise in WS history. He draws a no out walk in the 13th. Maybe he's involved in the end of this one too.
  24. ...I do like that in hockey tho. But Im not as attached to the game as I am with baseball.
  25. Willets Point wrote: Bottom of the 12th. If the Astros don't score here, under new MLB rules the teams go to a homerun hitting shootout. :) .......Im afraid they just might try that someday. Well,...1st theyll go back to a 154 game season and add 2 more playoff rounds. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
