  1. If Piazza is done as a Met, I am sure gonna miss him. There will be a void......... He was a big time gamer. Never saw an axe choppin swing like his before, and never will again.
  2. One thing I really enjoyed about this season was not hearing anything from Fred Wilpon about anything. He couldnt stay quite, unfortunately, and did go on record the other day saying he wishes Mike well, where ever he ends up. I personally would like to see Piazza stay on. Ive come to accept the fact that this is a looooooongshot.

  6. All this talk about off season moves and what we need always brings up catcher, first base, closer...... Ive made up my mind that Id go with Jacobs at first, sink or swim and damn the torpedoes. He's got power, he's a lefty, and he comes damn cheap. Maybe he's streaky, but he has 10 homers since his callup and I wont even try and project what that could be over a full season. 20 homers / 75 RBI would be nice from that position, and I certainly think he can post those numbers, at least. He's looked kinda ruff in the field last few but I think he plays the position well and will get nothing but better. Ive seen him make some excellent plays. He's got quick hands. Why look a gift horse in the mouth? If he falls terribly on his face we can shore it up by the All Star break or just eat crow, but I dont think he will. I think he's everything we are lookin for in a 1st baseman and everything we need. Forget about him catching. Mets should focus on a catcher or a good backup catcher for Castro (I would not complain if Castro ends up the Mets opening day catcher next year), if they feel he deserves the shot. When is Pudge Rod available?
  7. I almost follow allAthat....its kinda early. Note to self___________________ read this again after a cup of coffee.
  8. McKeon aint goin anywhere. I really wanted Lou when we were manager shopping before this season. I thought he would have been a good fit as far as dealing with NY. And Id love to see him manage the Mets vs the Skanks in the WS ( just fantasy thinkin). But I didnt think Randolf was a bad choice, still dont, and he aint goin anywhere for the next 2 seasons either.
  9. Johnny Dickshot wrote: Philly won. Cubs just tied up Houston again -- off Lidge in the 9th! seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians"-WSox going to B 11 tied 1-1. Great time of year this is. Cubs beat Asstros!!! Phils win! Boston beat the Skanks and the Indians/WhiteSox game is still tied in the 12th. Yea,....this is great baseball goin on here.
  10. Benson: 5 Heilman: 1 Jacobs: 2 Anderson: 2 Im having a problem tracking the RBI count. Didnt Floyd get a ribby in the 1st?
  11. Thats a tuff one. Ill take a stab at it with Frank Viola.
  12. ="mlbaseballtalk"] Could have been worse though, could have called Nolan Ryan an "ex-teamate!" lmao :)
  13. YES! We are 82 - 78. We cant fall below .500. Willie pasts his 1st test.
  14. Update Boston up 5-3. Cleveland losing to Chicago in the 9th, 1-0. Asstros tied 2-2 with the Cubbies after 6. Phils are winning 4-2 in the 8th.
  15. mlbaseballtalk wrote: Mookie Wilson, Wally Backman, Jesse Orosco Lee Mazzilli does count as an ex Scott teamate but 4 or a quarter of the roster does not make the label "ex teamate" a fact Steve yea,...why didnt he just go with ex-Met?
  16. This is a tuffer call that calling the best. I went with Green cuz he's up there, but Torborg and BuddyH are viable choices. All three had the tools with which to win, and all found new and novel ways to lose. Bamburger was pretty bad but he didnt have much to work with. Howe was a disappointing mismatch for NY and the Wilpons were too into the mix during those years.
  17. thnx Doc (re;the other thread). I was writing that for like an hour (lol) while,....(I hate to admit it), only peeking at the Met game as Im watching the Skanks/Boston contest on ESPN.(3-1 Boston-6th) This looks like a good game here though, and I see Ive been remiss with my kabooms. Forgive me. Looks like Bensons been pitching a fine game.
  18. This isnt easy, cuz all 3 were great in my book, but Ill break it down. Gil was great, almost my favorite, but he wasnt around long enough. The Mets didnt simply hire Hodges, they traded Bill Denehy (known for sharing a spot on Tom Seaver's rookie card) to the Washinton Senators for his services. He was a great field manager who got the most out of the team he had. He did turn the Mets from lovable losers into a team that could contend and were taken seriously from then on. The way he carried himself eluded respect from his players and peers. And his fans,.....he was that cool. He made complex managing look effortless. He was practically flawless in his one post season stint, going 7-1. He was 339-309 as manager of the Mets, the highlight being the amazing '69 season. Bobby Valentine was a great Met manager, and he did make the game fun and always interesting. He was something special, and I liked Bobby V alot. He knew how to handle players and play the press in the modern day game, and created an environment that took alot of pressure off his players, and onto him. He welcomed it. He was 15-9 in post season. He did get us to the big show, but never brought home the ring. ( Davey Johnson was also a great Met manager. A tactical strategist who played by the numbers, and was fortunate to be at the helm of possibly the best all around Met squad of all time, up to now. That cant be held against him. He may have fallen short in terms of playoff/world series expections, but what he did cannot be denied. He won 90 games or better 5 years in a row (and 6 of his 7 years as manager), including the Mets best single season record of 108 wins in '86. If Gil Hodges turned the Mets from jokers into champs, Johnson turned the Mets from the 'other New York team' into kings of baseball. The Mets of the 80's were a team to be feared and reckoned with, and dont sell Davey short as to the part he played as manager of that team. He was 12-8 in the postseason and his hilight would be going on to win a total of 116 games in '86 when his Mets became World Champs for the 1st time since 1969. That was the last time they went all the way. Dave Johnson was 595-417, and Davey gets my vote.
  19. Reyes: 2 Anderson: 1 Beltran: 1 Cairo: .2 Zambrano: 2 Ishii: .8 Padilla: 1 Heilman: 2
  20. Diaz pops out to put me out of my misery. Phils hand it to the Mets and, tho derailed, their trains still a chuggin. Its a long shot tho, but this is baseball. Could very well happen.
  21. Mets pinch hit for Anderson with matsui, who swings at a very shitty 1st pitch to pop out. Beltran follows with a check swing K. Alls we need is a 10 run homer fron Diaz, who pinch hits with 2 out in the 9th. (Phils went to Fultz instead of Wags)
  22. Burrell goes yard.......crap. The Phils explode here in the 8th. 16-6, Phils on top. (Houston is tied with the cards in the 7th)
  23. OUCH! Utley with a baseclearing single. Someones gonna get an error on that throw by Floyd to second. Utly has now driven in over 100. Victerino hits a pich hit homer (who the hell is he?) and the Phils now have 15 runs. A 6 run 8th,.....ugh.
