Rounding third, you see a mob of teammates ready to greet you at the plate. Who do you want there? Metfairy mentioned Pedro, but I'll start with a current Met. A lot has happened over the years, but Jose Reyes is a guy I want in that pile. GMJ, because I know he can't hit anything and hurt me. Reyes is a good choice. I think I saw a clip of him shoving people out of the way so he could be front and center last night, and make an uppercut type motion like he was all set to knock Ike out. I think I recall in that celebrated picture from a couple of years ago with everyone waiting at the plate that Reyes was front and center too.
  2. Hmm... Ike, Niese, Tejada, Takahashi, Igarashi, Feliciano, Mejia and Carter (he still qualifies right?) 8 rookies.
  3. Edgy DC wrote: Let me clarify then. Why would Bobby V. listen to Michael Kay? I suspect it's the paycheck. When the Mets man up and start paying him instead, I suspect he'll stop listening to Michael Kay except when Kay has him on the show for the playoffs after the Yankees have been eliminated and he doesn't know what else to do.
  4. He wore 23 in the WBC too, so I imagine that's his "first choice" but Carter was here first. If Feliciano sticks and Carter doesn't. (doesn't seem likely ) i wonder if he'll switch.
  5. Edgy DC wrote: Why would Bobby V. talk to Michael Kay? He does every week. Actually, It's the highlight (of the week) of Kay's show. and it must happen betwen 5 and 5:30 because it's the only time I listen. (and Francesa is so often either on a 14minute commercial break or talking about something completely stupid taht I switch over)
  6. I heard Michael Kay tell Bobby V that the word is his name is pronounced "Strawsburg".

  8. I just meant his walks are down but he has more hits than normal. He's certainly not having a good year so far though, no, excepting maybe the increased batting average depending on how you read into it. Is he pressing because the offense is slumping and as a result taking less walks but getting a couple more hits? I suppose I could look up swing stats, etc. But I don't really care. I guess he's just appeared a little better defensively and I've heard analysts/personalities mention it. (I usually know better than to listen though..guess it just gibed with what I'd seen) Bah, he's a Philly. I don't care. Maybe guys have just figured him out a bit? I've always wondered how big sluggers that can't hit lefties and strike out a ton like that continually do well. If you're a major league pitcher you should be able to exploit guys that have that big a weakness. Hamels however, sucks. sucks sucks. I think I looked up his stats a couple of weeks ago and while his ERA was okay, the rest of the stuff didn't seem to be boding well for him having a good year. Can we get off Howard and just stick with the Phillies Suck angle?
  9. Fine, it's a stretch. But the WAR stat is certainly not infallable, and even if Howard was to put up precisely the exact same quality year to year, his WAR would fluctuate. He'd be just as good, but would be less or more good than the replacement player. He's seemingly upped his defense, although it appears he's taking less walks this year in exchange for more singles. He's also on pace for a career low in Ks and seemingly has stopped the vs LHP dropoff, being around his career average and actually getting some power hits off them. So maybe he's not "getting better" each year, but he seems to be working hard to inprove some of the deficits in his game. He's obviously not going to be worth the contract, and I wasn't comparing him to the best players in the game, but he seems to be rounding out to be more than just a 1 dimensional slugging DH.
  10. Gwreck wrote: Fielder's having a down year, so maybe Howard's the 4th best first baseman in the league now. He seems like a nice guy, and even ignoring the contract, he's still gotta be one of the most overrated players not named Jeter. Howard's really upping his game though. Year after year he gets better, works harder, and becomes more well-rounded. I don't know if he's the 'best' player out there, but if I _had_ to choose a Phillie to not hate, it'd be him. Rollins is the more over-rated one.
  11. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: That is to say, folks who purport to know say that Harvey comes on as an easier sign. There are some conspiracy theorists who've suggested it might be a good idea that the Mets pick someone "unsignable" in this year's draft, in order to essentially defer to next year's (which seems stronger on paper). They don't seem to have done that here. There are also people that think the Mets will finish near, or at, the bottom of the division and would get a good draft pick anyway. I doubt Harvey is unsignable. Boras generally gets his guys signed, and while he does have a senior year to fall back on, doesn't seem like the route they want to go. Plus it's his second time in the draft, so I doubt he would've done that if he wasn't serious. I generally point and laugh at conspiracy theorists though.
  12. Fman99 wrote: Padres win, Phillies lose. I approve. Mets are only half a game behind the Phillies. Depending on how you feel about the Braves, this is excellent news. Division is ripe for the picking, and the Phillies haven't been hitting in way too long for what would was considered a "great" offense. Hamels ERA is good, just under 4, but he's 5-5 and mostly sucks.
  13. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: IIRC, people passed on Pelfrey largely due to the Boras/signability issue. Harvey should be an easier go. More evidence the Mets go over-slot/sign guys when they feel they're worth it? shocker..
  14. Benjamin Grimm wrote: That's what I want too. Seven or eight Carters and one or two Barajases. I've heard some rumblings about Barajas tiring late last year, and I think he's already playing more than the average catcher (guess I could look it up) so I'd rather 2-3 Rods, 5 Carters and maybe a Wright.
  15. Could of things, supposedly they will review the data because certain teams complained. (But, no one complained about Maine. I guess because it wasn't as long a layoff and it was more believable when the found something...after...they put him on the DL?) I'm sure they'll be able to find something/did find something to justify it, if only barely. From what I've been reading though, sounds like if it's bothering him, it's not really bothering him. Will be interesting to see how soon he pitches in a game. Hanley's a moron, but we knew that. Do the tons of Mets fans in Miami just not boo the Mets on the road? I always feel it's wrong to boo the Mets at all on the road or when the Yankees are visiting. Otherwise I'd imagine Citi and Dolphin+ would sound the same.

    GMJ GONE

Also I heard Howie relay that Manuel said Bay would be the backup in an emergency, with Carter in left.

    GMJ GONE

err..I didn't post twice. fine. Shame Blanco's hurt, and Thole's hurt. But hopefully only for a couple of days. It's sad that as much as I wanted to get rid of GMJ both moves actually made the team worse today.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I wonder who the emergency center fielder is? I'm guessing, in order: Francoeur, Bay, Tatis, Cora. Bay has major league CF experience, so my guess would be him. And my guess is Tatis would get the nod over Carter in LF if that happened. Though I could see Manuel using Frenchy first. After Cora I think it's Carter, Ollie, Mejia (so he can get major league experience on what happens when the balls get hit over his head), then Tejada because he's fairly fast so that must mean he can play CF and after that Jerry himself will try to play it.
