  1. wouldn't be Rubin if he didn't dampen hopes. Of course, Sandy says they have an uncomfortable range for Reyes. But that doesn't mean they won't do it, even if it makes them uncomfortable. He never says unreachable. He points out that Reyes doesn't affect the other signings. He mentions flexibility for mid-season acquisions (something you don't do when you're just planning on cutting payroll and riding it out)
  2. Good that Jeff's on the "Blame Omar, he must've done it" bandwagon. There will still be a line in dead-center too. It's fine. Shea used to have a line too.
  3. i don't think the wall will be curved, no.
  4. Centerfield wrote: Well done. Now re-sign Reyes. This will be the response to everything until it happens. "Mets release partial plan info" "Well done. Now re-sign Reyes."
  5. Pujols to pick next manager as part of his contract to stay?
  6. The Second Spitter wrote: Eddie (Bradley Cooper) down on his luck (it's tough) stumbles upon the mother of all smart pills. Hijinks ensue. Plot holes aplenty and deus ex machina ending aside, vaguely enjoyable. Best to think of it as a seriously- toned Brewster's Millions and it's attempt at social critique carries about as much weight as that film. De Niro miscast. I enjoyed it. Wasn't great, but fun still. I don't know if De Nero was miscast as much as mis-developed. He mostly exists as Cooper's stepping stone. He could've been like a non-drug genius and represented what could be with just an iron will and ruthless attitude, but it's not really developed well.

Edgy DC wrote: I was expecting a lot of transactions and appointments that people were sitting on during the World Series and earlier to be announced Monday, but I guess this wasn't big enough for anything more than a press release, so they let it off the leash on a cold, precipitous Saturday. yeah, probably not. the beat guys didn't even have it before the press release email.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: I'm certainly down with a playoff schedule with no days off. But I'm feeling that baseball had it right in the 19th century, and to a greater extent UK football has it right today. The champ is the team with the greatest record at the end of a full season. And if elimination play excites the pants of of you, have simultaneous cup play throughout the year, but don't pretend that the cup play results undo the season performance. Then we go back to the unbalanced schedule argument.
  9. How about two best of 15s, two teams from each league, with no days off? Make 'em use that fourth and perhaps fifth starter. Removing the days off makes it more like the regular season. Not that that's happening, but if they want to add another wildcard team, they could probably do that sudden death style, and still have three rounds of best of 7s if they removed days off. Except with tV scheduling you'd never be able to push back the first rounds without butting up against the second round. Which is a shame, cause I'd love for the World Series to start as soon as both pennants are won. Having teams get almost a week off if they finish in 4 is weird.
  10. The moment we've all been waiting for. METS NAME TOM GOODWIN FIRST BASE COACH FLUSHING, N.Y., October 29, 2011 The New York Mets today announced Tom Goodwin as first base coach. Goodwin, 43, finished his fourth year with the Boston Red Sox organization last season and his third as the organizations Minor League Outfield and Base Running Coordinator. He coached Lowell (A) of the New York-Penn League in 2008, where the Spinners finished first with a 40-33 record. Goodwin also managed the Lewisville Lizards of the independent Continental Baseball League in 2007. Originally drafted out of Fresno State University in the first round of the 1989 Amateur Draft by Los Angeles (NL), Goodwin played 14 seasons in the majors and finished with a .268 (1,029-3,846) lifetime batting average. The outfielder and native of Fresno, CA played 1,288 games for the Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs. Goodwin recorded four seasons of at least 50 steals, with a career-best 66 swipes in 1996 for Kansas City and finished his career with 369 stolen bases. From 1995-2000, he never finished lower than seventh in the American League in steals. Goodwin won an Olympic Gold Medal in 1988 as a member of Team USAs baseball squad.

  12. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think five years, $90 million is the high end of the reasonable zone. And I also think it's reasonable for the Mets to not go above that until they find that they have to. option years are your friend.
  13. Edgy DC wrote: Yeah, the "we" jumped out at me also. "Low" is probably a touch of tabloid hyperbole, but it doesn't help the Mets position to have their offer publicly characterized as such before the numbers are known. I think it does. Presumably Alderson is going to make the Reyes camp aware of what they're thinking, but perhaps if the public perception is the offer is low, the resulting "blow them out of the water" offer from other teams won't be as high. (If it indeed gets there) We'll see how public the negotiations become. This is Alderson's first real offseason where he's not playing catchup and knows all the cards.
  14. Met Hunter wrote: Guys today get a pass, cause most people watching don't know what they're seeing. Part of that's the broadcast. Gary Keith and Ron maybe replay and note that stuff, and the viewer is smarter for it. Joe Buck glosses over it, and it's forgotten.
  15. Edgy DC wrote: Then let the ump hammer on the manager that he's being inconsiderate and holding up the game and remind him that he's the supreme law. I was at the gastropub last night, and I watched as the Rangers catcher took a painful foul ball off an unpadded part of his person. No words were exchanged, but the ump made a point of buying some time by cleaning off the plate. It was great. He just looks down, with a look of "My, isn't that plate a mess, and here in the World Series --- disgraceful." He takes a circular walk around the plate, pulls the little broom from his pocket in a circular motion, bends his ass directly at the pitcher, and paints the dish with the broom in clean even strokes like he's an artist. And he is. I explain this tableau to my wife, and praise the beauty of the automatic charity. She asks how he knows, and I tell her how he's back there taking fouls too, and how, from their common human vulnerability, an ancient bond of a game-delay ritual has occurred. And of course, if the ump got hit, the catcher would walk the ball pack to the pitcher, take off his mask along the way, spit, ask the pitcher how his wife likes the new place, rub the ball for him some as they spoke, and then walk back and pick up a pebble or two between the mound and the plate on the way. And we're all made more human by it, and with all better understand the gift of a summer day, or an autumn night. Well, everybody but Josh Levin. That stuff is different I think. But there is a nuance to disrupting the timing of the pitcher these days. Beltran did it a lot from what I noticed, stepping out to mess with the pitcher. If you think about it some things have to be faster, years ago for a foul ball down the line they had to have the fielder run over and get it (how old a tradition are ball boys in the OF?) and then throw the ball back in. Now they just take another ball out of the umps bag and away we go.
  16. Centerfield wrote: I know people complain about it a lot, and understood a four hour game can get tedious, but I have no problem at all with the pace of a baseball game. I love the time I spend watching baseball. I'm all for trying to eliminate some of that time. I don't think there's any harm and trying to keep pitchers from taking the ball, then taking a brief hike around the mound, doing some Yoga to get focused, and then stepping on the rubber. But I'm feverishly (feverently?) against a clock of any sort being introduced into baseball, ever. no clock. that's the whole beauty of it. But I agree that I don't really have a problem with the pace of a game. Sometimes it's annoying when teams like the Yankees have the pitcher throw to first, then have the catcher come out, then have the pitcher throw to first again, and then the manager comes out walking like he's 105 and needs a walker, before finally signaling for the reliever. this is not what's keeping people from being interested in baseball as NFL people like to claim. The break, extra point, break, kickoff to a fair catch, break, okay lets play again nature of an NFL game doesn't seem to keep anyone away.
  17. You know, this is probably pathetic of me, but it wasn't until that picture just now that I realized the Picnic area wasn't an 'always' thing at Shea. I hadn't really given it much thought before. But it obviously was in the way of the rotating field level. The Mets had a picnic when the Jets left. I guess not obviously. It seems like it would've been, but it wasn't. mets.com says it was added in 1980, 4 years before the Jets left.
  18. cool.

The scores were similar, games were full of twists and turns, and were ended by a late inning homer by an "unlikely" hitter. Later There are no good highlights of that game obviously.
  20. Edgy DC wrote: Will Washington get the same criticism LaRussa had been getting? Will he get the same criticism MacNamara got? Because Cruz doesn't really represent a perfect analog for Buckner --- old, white, broken down, chronically injured --- and failing to get to a hard-hit ball ain't the same as letting a bouncer go through your legs. He took a crap route (though I don't recall McCarver and Buck underscoring this point). Yeah, I guess Endy should've been in, but do we have a good idea what the state of his legs are? Endy's not exactly a spring chicken, and he's had injuries, and most of us are probably thinking of him as '06 Endy, which was 5 years ago. I didn't even realize Cruz was replaced in the 11th (one batter, big deal). May have been a nod to the possibility of a longer game and wanting to double switch as much as that he was hurting. I believe the words mike and mike used were "No offense to Freese, but.." and then basically said it should've been Pujols, he's no Fisk or Puckett, etc.

Now Ron Jaworski to discuss the Kansas City chiefs game on Sunday!"

I could look it up, since I've tracked all my beers this year in the untappd app. I've had two, both at a wedding two weeks ago because catering calls don't have beer selections. Those stadiums are different although the dugouts the same in the pictures. the YS one is clearly YS (at least in the sense that you can see the stupid white fence thing in the top right) Weird when you look that closely.
  23. metirish wrote: Thanks Ceetar.....fucking Freese eh? I have to say though, the Cardinals fans had some good signs I saw afterwards "Forecast for Game 6: Deep Freese" etc. Mike and Mike this morning had the gall to say something along the lines of "Shame it was Freese. If it was Pujols, this game would've been truly epic." Also start rattling off best WS games without mentioning '86. screw 'em.
  24. 2-run lead going to the bottom of the ninth. closer Felix in. out, double to Pujols, walk to Berkman. Craig strikes out. Clearly in no-doubles defense, first and second, with Freese up. And Freese hits a deep smash to the wall in RF that Cruz seemed to pull up on early and take a weird route to. Either way, Freese manages a triple against the no-doubles defense and drives in the tying runs before Molina strikes out. Texas comes right back with an Andrus single and Hamilton home run. (Hamilton went 3/6 to raise his average to .240) so we'll try that save thing again with a 2-run lead in the 10th. Darren Oliver comes in, gives up two singles (the second was a lucky blooper that just landed fair) Kyle Lohse (Possibly today's pitcher, though most people doubt it) bunts. An amazing bunt actually, to the SS, who only throws Lohse out by half a step. Feldman comes in, gets Theriot(RBI groundout), walks Pujols (winning run), to pitch to Berkman who singles in the tying run. Craig makes out. Rangers go 1-hit-2-3. Freese homers.
  25. Met Hunter wrote: Am I the only one that saw the omen? Endy Chavez batting in the ninth. My first reaction was uh-oh. Then it dawned on me that maybe Ron Washington had the good sense to put him in for defense for the ninth. When I saw Nelson Cruz and his pathetic attempt to field Freese's line drive, I realized that Washington was more McNamara than McGraw. Just think how sweet it would have been having Endy wrap it up by robbing another St Louis third baseman. I would have cheered. Oliver in the tenth? Geez, the only thing missing would have been a shot of Beltran in the stands. Tonight's prediction-blowout St Louis ala 85 Royals. supposedly Castillo was in teh stands. yeah, if Endy was in for Cruz it's the offseason. After watching the replay, I think if _I_ was in for Cruz it's the offseason.
