  1. hah, great title.

Hopefully, they didn't fire him afterwards. funny, I know I heard a couple of tweets that were screaming about the Mets not having a scout there. Doesn't take much to rile people up. Sandy's been pretty good about doing his due diligence though. big fan of the informed decision.

I mean, the Phillies were going to just give Howard another extension, but since he got hurt they figured they'd wait until next year.

  5. Edgy DC wrote: Sure. Same can be said of most of the other better guys/better bargains. I'm pretty cool with Thole returning. I'm not ready to give up on him for sure. And there are a lot of BAD catchers out there.
  6. Benjamin Grimm wrote: And it's a bit of a letdown to find out that the press release is about blue paint. holiday food drive this time.
  7. I'm okay going to war with the lineup we have (WITH Reyes). If you want to find some mostly lateral but maybe more upside swap for Pagan or Thole I'd be okay with that, but don't see it drastically changing much. the place to get 'creative' is with the rotation and bullpen.

  9. MFS62 wrote: Back to the large one. Last week, Mike was actually saying good things about Jose Reyes. Very good things. Then I realized that this was the day after Jose became a free agant and wasn't a Met. I wanted to post it then, but my power was still out, I had no computer access, and had other things to worry about until the power came back on. Later I noticed this last Spring. It seemed like people toned down all the normal anti-Reyes rhetoric in anticipation of saying nice things about him when he left. I suspect it'll all come back once he re-signs.
  10. MFS62 wrote: A guy at work told me that Jon Heyman just reported that the Mets will tender Pagan. Not sure whether it was twitted, tweeted or (since it was Heyman) twatted. Can anyone provide a link or confirmation? Later I believe Rubin 'reported' this as well. But it's not actually..'news' to be reported. I don't think Sandy spoke or anything, it's just further speculation.
  11. Edgy DC wrote: Well, they've fired the infield guy on the coaching staff. But Reyes has been in the division as long as anybody not named chipper. He should know where to sit and when. Hmm..maybe. I imagine players tend to give more credit to their peers than is perhaps warranted. I get he may know Wright, but Murphy (on either side?) and Turner? Tejada? Would he 'shake off' a positioned called from the bench anyway?
  12. Edgy DC wrote: Well, if his positioning was wise, I imagine it would have shown up statistically. Oh, I was pondering the opposite actually. That his positioning was unwise. More specifically, are the Mets correctly aware of the ranges of their infielders to the point of positioning them properly? You'd hope so, but I'm not sure it's that simple.
  13. intriguing, but given the interest by others I'm not sure the Mets are in a position to buy on hype.
  14. attgig wrote: Jose getting written up for his defense: http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/30796/jose-reyes-aramis-ramirez-share-flaws Last year, what hurt Reyes was that he struggled on balls hit to the shortstop-third base hole. He made 18 fewer plays than the average shortstop on balls hit in that area. On all other balls hit to him, Reyes rated well above average in getting outs. could that be because Wright has such horrible range, and the balls hit to that general area - most good fielding 3bmen would be getting and not leaving it to the SS? No, it could reflect positively on Wright/Turner/Murphy, although I don't think it does. If the 3B makes MORE plays, than the SS would end up making less. I don't know the details of those stats. Are those 18 fewer plays hits, or simply balls in play? What's the percentage? It can't simply mean 18 because Reyes did play fewer games (I think anyway) than the average SS. Is it prorated for 162? I always wonder how much of this is positioning. Was Reyes positioned more towards 2B to account for what they may have perceived as lesser range there?

Whoever gets the funnest new pooler gets one of my doubles from my 1970s yearbook/media guide collection. There's nothing to talk about with the Mets right now, come to the pool to not talk about it! there's a sales pitch for the ages.

  17. MFS62 wrote: We all have to remember what an emotional roller-coaster it means to be a Mets fan. That tradition tells us two things will happen: 1) The Mets will re-sign Reyes. 2) The very next day, MLB will put his thyroid medication on the banned substances list. Later funny, but luckily he's not taking medication. :-D dgwphotography wrote: I'm already sick of this - let's just shit or get off the pot. If this off-season is going to be a daily dose of will he return or not, wake me up in April. yeah..while it could end tomorrow, seems unlikely to be a quick thing. I really hope afterwards they call up Wright and get that extension done too. Don't want to have to put up with this again next year.

  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: He made the same vacuous argument about Frankie Rodriguez. Ceetar seems to think that if a player is good, it doesn't matter how much you pay him. no i didn't, and for the most part, it doesn't matter.
  21. TransMonk wrote: I think if Jose were looking for a short-term deal for the most $$$, the Mets would have him signed by now. But paying 34-35 year old shortstops ~$20M is going to handcuff whatever team offers that kind of deal down the line. Says who? I don't know if that's true. Especially for Reyes, who likely will still be a pretty damn good player. 35 isn't 55. And winning in the interim will raise payroll. ideally the Mets will only have ~40ish invested in what may be overpaid players in 2016, and Wright and Reyes should still be productive. building wisely _around_ them in the meantime, as well as being successful, makes it much less likely that it'll handcuff the Mets.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: The scenario is whether he's worth the price, or whether, on the other hand, if the money he'll cost is better invested elsewhere. And that's not so simple. I disagree. I'm no the GM/owner. I don't care how the finances are. They've been making a point of it not being impacted by Madoff..well fine, keep great/loved players.
  23. That anyone is arguing that a legendary Met who's barely, if at all, middle-aged in baseball terms and who's one of the most exciting players to watch and extremely talented should _not_ be a Met is just ridiculous. It's really very very simple. Either you're a professional baseball team that wants to build a winning team, or you're not. If there's a scenario where having Jose Reyes on your team is a bad idea..then I dunno that I can watch baseball anymore. Even if Joker was holding Jose at gunpoint, I'd still say the chances of Reyes being healthy in 2012 are vastly greater than the chance that Ruben Tejada even gives us anything close to what Reyes does.
  24. Edgy DC wrote: As far as slowing it down, he didn't play particularly well in July and August. well, comparing him to say..Jose Reyes, he didn't. But he still pretty much played above average level for SS.

I suppose a registrant still needs to be placed in an approved users group, but that should no longer be necessary now that we have the registrant answer a question and decipher a cryptogram. I've linked and retweeted a couple of times, but who knows how many people obviously didn't make it through. If registration is actually automated now, we'll see who starts trickling in.
