  1. I'm going with the running out of bodies way. Though I guess laughers like that work too although it always seems like most managers prefer not to do 'gimmicky' things like that.

  3. Don't look for dirt on other players, other than about A. Rodriguez. There was also the shoe-kicking veteran Texas righty (Heiling?). It was 2001. I think he said that the pitcher was released soon after. RA made his debut on April 22d. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TEX/2001-transactions.shtml It wasn't Jonathan Johnson who is RA's buddy. It wasn't Brantley who bought him clothes. So if the transaction log is accurate, it was Kevin Foster (whomever that is) who was released in August. Helling pitched the entire season for Texas. Tim Crabtree maybe? http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/crabtti01.shtml Jeff Brantley most likely http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brantje01.shtml Just finished the book. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It was interspersed with some pages about last year, which I found particularly interesting. Mentoring Pelfrey, hopping a fence with him to kick field goals on a back field near Digital Domain Park in order to win a bet with David Wright. Passionate farewells to Beltran and Reyes as well as mentioning that Beltran probably bought suits for any number of rookies to look good on road trips. Also confesses that he was disappointed that they did trade Beltran and K-Rod, truly believing they were in the race. Jerry Manuel doesn't come off real good either, not that you'd expect him to.
  4. Yes but Quintanilla would have to be sent down again. unlikely he's sticking. That may be more the issue than moving around players to find room for him. He's hitting well this year about an .804 OPS in the Pacific Coast League..well.. a wee bit below the PCL average last year. That's in 300 games. Valdespin barely has 300 AB and has a much higher upside.
  5. I didn't get the rational for Valdespin being brought up in the first place, but it seems like we've got 40 man issues and Cedeno probably taking over on Friday anyway so Quintanilla probably doesn't add enough to add him to the roster.

I'll take the Young we had for 4 starts last year and say thankyouverymuch if we can get him to expand that same pace for like 20 or more. I'll take it even if it's only for four starts.
  7. Edgy DC wrote: Ken Davidoff ? @KenDavidoff Expect an official announcement shortly that the #Mets will host the 2013 #MLB All-Star Game. It's been locked in for over five years. heard that one before. is the second sentence an excuse as to why they haven't been talking about the lack of an announcement over these last 5 years?

  10. usually by now someone's leaked of they've seen Valdespin or Q or something.

If you can skip the "Batista spot" once or twice, why not? There is one off day in May, Thursday, and it doesn't really allow any normal skipping of the 5th spot. They're not even sure they're 100% comfortable pitching Santana on normal rest every time. He's actually only done it once this year. (and won't do it again until next Wednesday) I think we might be past the problem stage of where we're worried his shoulder won't be up for it, but certainly not where you push him. Maybe in September if you need to get him an extra start, but not now. You _might_ be able to massage it a little coming up to push back Batista starts a day or two, but you'd probably rather pitch him against Milwaukee than Cincinnati.

Batista actually pitched .1 against the Phillies. Acosta loaded the bases, Batista emptied them for him. 3 batters, 16 pitches, 10 strikes, Double, Single, Ground-out.

If he doesn't need to be put on the DL, which would be good news in the long term, I guess we see Quintanilla. Cedeno was supposed to start a rehab assignment today. The plan was to activate him on Friday, but I suppose circumstances may alter that plan. Cedeno isn't actually even eligible to come off until..Thursday? so might see Q for Rottino in the meantime. Buzz late last night seemed to be DL for Tejada which I have to imagine means Valdespin starting most games. In terms of Depth? they did slide Wright over there late in a game last year so I guess he might serve as the emergency guy if they played short today and Turner got hurt.

Next two Batista starts are against teams scoring below the league average in runs (Brewers only barely though) so that should at least..help? maybe? He has to stop walking people. Philly has drawn the least amount of walks in the National League. Milwaukee is 12th, 11 below the league average. so maybe that helps.

  18. ELIAS: Last player before Chris Davis to go 0-8 and be the winning pitcher in a game was HOFer Rube Waddell, July 4, 1905 PHI Athletics.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: Yeah trading an out for a run (or a stronger guarantee of a run) will always have its value, but more generally, there have been diminishing returns on the outs they've given up. Turner was also in the game cold at that point right? May have cost him a step or two. I think it's still a big of a sample size with the bad running. Not that they're ever going to be great at some of the extra base stuff with the average-sucky speed they have, but they were aggressive in spring training too and it might be time to tone it down a wee bit. They should always be trying to read pitchers and look for tells and stuff, but maybe not be quite as daring.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Yeah, it's not like GotW would be substantially different if suddenly handed to another network. money.. i'm okay with them pimping out games of the week and what not, but it seems counter productive to limit your own product in doing so. Highlights normally show up within a couple of minutes online and on the app..just not on Saturdays. It limits the ability of other teams to start games during Fox's window, messing with what's best for that team and it's fanbase. If a pitcher is pitching a perfect game up against the Fox game (how dare they schedule another game for that time?!) MLB Network can't even show it on their own channel. Fox will usually cut away like they did for Humber, but teams actually watching that game may not want to cut away, particularly not 100% away. It's just a mess.

  22. I've retweeted and referenced in posts, but don't seem to get any bites.
  23. hit for Torres, first and second. Thole up. Valdespin steals third.
  24. 0-2 to Davis..*sigh* and Ks. good job..
