But really, agents work like hell (and the union does too) to keep players' salaries from being pinned to their actual performance. Well, of course. I don't think they should be either, including the murkier games started/finished/played. I don't think they can or will do something like this, but I was just throwing it out there as a thought experiment. How do you properly compensate a player of Dickey's age when he's performing to the level of someone 10 years younger and could possibly provide the same value as if he were in fact 28 and still guard against the risk of giving a 38 year old player a whole lot of commitment?
  2. Edgy DC wrote: I would love it if every player in Met history got a Randy Jones clause in his contract, reading "Player only gets paid if he doesn't play as poorly as Randy Jones." But I think you're thinking of Bobby Jones. which one?
  3. Edgy DC wrote: Woulda been nice six weeks ago, but welcome. Got six more weeks to pass Kelly Stinnett on our All-Time Mets Catchers Named Kelly list. He's not there by default, just by not being Kelly Stinnett? (who was a perfect 4/4 in Stolen Bases as a Met)
  4. metirish wrote: There's a lot of money been thrown about in here, thankfully it's not ours. I was thinking 3/Y $27 million, he'd take that right now I bet, maybe up his option to meet the $9 million? With Bay (and Santana) big on the books next year there's probably incentive on the Mets part to backload the deal and keep the option what it is. Although with an older pitcher you'd almost want to front load it.
  5. Gwreck wrote: But, again, there is no way any player would sign an incentive clause based on pitcher wins. sure there is. Maybe Dickey would sign for 3/30 and the Mets say 'hey, let's add in this incentive bit'. why wouldn't he sign it? Does he think he's testing free agency again at 41 and is going to get _more_?
  6. Gwreck wrote: 100 wins for whom? You can't sign players to incentive contracts based on team performance. No pitcher (or his agent) would ever agree to an option based on pitcher wins for obvious reasons. 100 career wins for R.A. Dickey. You can't sign him based on the incentive to get (currently 44) wins maybe, but you could pay him for passing Randy Jones (100) on the All-Time wins list. This is basically the deal A-Rod has. It certainly doesn't matter if that incentive is for 4th on the list or 575th does it?
  7. How about a vesting option for 2016 based on 100 wins? (can tweak it to 105 or whatever works) That probably works out that if he stays healthy and reasonably effective, it'll kick in, otherwise it won't.

He has a 0.91 K/BB rate this year. That's awesome. So, naturally, last night he debuts in the Bronx against Texas with 4 full innings of 2-hit, 0 BB, 4 K ball Prompting the brilliant Mike Lupica to say on his show today that he thinks Lowe will be the #2 in the playoff rotation.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: I can't imagine that, on the verge of a Cy Young Award, he'd cash in for less that $10 million a year. I'd jump all over it if he would. well, he's 'signed' for 5 million next year. Thoughts about knuckleballers pitching until they're 45 are one thing, but does _he_ feel like he can get through 2013 without showing the signs of age that suggest more than a 2 year deal is risky?
  10. I'd be surprised of Duda's not back on the next homestand. I suppose they might be managing the roster crunch by not demoting someone like Valdespin to bring him back (They're not going to just release Bay. the potential payoff, however miniscule, of him showing anything between now and March 20th is too high for what's at this point maybe 30 AB until rosters expand) until 9/1, but someone getting hurt could change that. Or they do actually trade Hairston, but no one's offering anything for him, so.. The flip side to fielding being the same in the minors and majors is that basically he's still getting in the fielding work they want, and probably more than he would up here. And he wasn't hitting. It's one thing to have a guy take his lumps, but he wasn't playing well at all on either offense or defense, so they decided to get Valdespin the ABs.
  11. We're talking about his age 39, 40, and 41 season on a three year deal. Knuckleball or not, he's still pushing off a mound with his leg, landing on the other one. This situation is quite unique. Will it be expensive? Maybe. But I don't believe he'd be getting a 3 year $60 million deal if he played out next year with his Mets career averages. And because we're probably not talking about free agency, it's more about what Dickey expects and what the Mets offer than it is what other teams would value him at. options years at 8 million perhaps?
  12. Edgy DC wrote: Damn, we are sliding out of the zeitgeist with alacrity. The "the rules of horror movie 'stay a virgin' guy in Scream"? Seriously? The standup-comic-with-lousy-dreadlocks guy from The Nutty Professor wasn't available? That's who I associate him with. He also had a "punk'd" show prior to punk'd i think.
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: Glad to have him on board. Now all I have to do is find out who Jamie Kennedy is. he was the rules of horror movie "stay a virgin" guy in Scream.

  16. I'm concerned that they'res a major preparation flaw in the pitching, on the coaching side. Mix in some new faces and there's no reason to think it'll completely suck again next year. They could also use some better defense. Crapshoot wise, it's certainly possible Ramon Ramirez goes back to being a good reliever next year. Parnells good, and there's reason to believe in Edgin at least as a lefty reliever. Rauch has been pretty good (although not under control for next year right?) and I guess Francisco has been almost serviceable, except for a couple of spurts where he's horribly, horribly bad.

  19. read the news on CC. Elbow pain but MRI is fine. Isn't that what happened to John Maine?
  20. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: CC onto the DL again, they signed Derek Lowe. That said these pieces of shit nearly came back from a 10-1 deficit yesterday in Toronto. on the flip side their bullpen has nearly (and has) given up a lot of big leads lately. i missed the CC thing, wow. I've been a little unfocused lately.
  21. Mets are off tonight and have given us a reason to scoreboard watch the other races, so this week starts off with the Yankees hosting the Rangers. Yankees pitching, particularly the starters, looks like June was the fluke 2.99 ERA. 3.97 and 4.41 in July and August since. Rangers are pretty good at that hitting thing, so this could be fun. Dodgers vs Pirates, Dodgers trail them by 2.5 in the 2nd wild card. (although only the giants by 1 for division) Giants get the Nats. Phillies vs. Miami battle for last place in the NL East.
  22. Gwreck wrote: Because, unfortunately, until the Mets show they are willing/able to spend money, everybody is going to assume (rightly) that they aren't. I fail to see how that's rightly, unless there's an agenda. You can certainly question if the Mets will spend, but they need an outfield and Bourn is avail. At the very least a "the Mets need an OF too" without mentioning finances.

Hopefully he don't feel it til tomorrow. Five walks already. Not good. Settle in Matt. strategy point: doesn't count as a mound visit right? Wouldn't this be the perfect time to sneak Harvey a line from the scouting report? even if only the trainer goes out? (hey, tell him he likes it down and away..)
  24. #Mets Friday lineup vs. Braves: Torres-8, Tejada-6, Wright-5, Hairston-9, Murphy-3, Cedeno-4, Bay-7, Johnson-2, Harvey-1 home debut for Harvey. Bourn 8 Prado 7 Heyward 9 Freeman 3 Uggla 4 Francisco 5 Ross 2 Janish 6 Maholm 1 Brian has a sore shoulder. Larry scratched with a bad back. he tweeted this last night. The movie channels dont work and the beds make my back spasm up! Am i complaining too much? Im sorry, gotta vent to someone. Love yall!!!
