  2. Wagers of 2014. Made this one with my boss. Total point difference for three players: avg/hr/rbi C. Young .271/22/62 Granderson .261/31/111, Lagares .251/4/55 his: young: .228/18/51: grandy: .252/21/78 : lagares: .248/8/41

  4. Edgy MD wrote: I think it does help the player's cause. It denies not one, but potentially two teams of compensatory draft picks, and it underscores an extreme situation that a handful of players found themselves to be in due to little fault of their own (possibly by being a little bit too good), therefore strengthening the resolve of the players union to push further against free agent compensation. . That maybe helps the cause in general but not the player who will now get less money for less work, and while the compensation pick (may) be hurting them, though we're not even sure Drew has any real suitors willing to give him what he's asking for, it could help to in that teams now they can hire a mercenary and if he's good and walks they get a pick back afterwards. And now look, perhaps Boras and Drew are looking to sign a one-year and try free agency again next year, but with the threat of staying out until June teams are going to be more wary whereas they might be willing to splurge on a one year deal figuring they get a pick out of it afterwards. Keep in mind the two main teams mentioned for Drew are the Red Sox, who wouldn't give up a pick, and the Mets who'd only give up a third rounder.
  5. Centerfield wrote: Wait, so if I'm following this right, Ike Davis says he didn't want to mention the injury last year because of fear he'd get taken out of the lineup. So at the point you get sent down to AAA, doesn't it make sense to say, "Um, Wally, my oblique has been hurting for a while. Maybe I could take a week or two off before I find myself again?" And he didn't mention it after the season because he didn't want to make excuses. But he is mentioning it now. To a reporter. But he's not making excuses. Then when the reporter reports what he has said to him, in a one-on-one interview, Ike gets upset. Because now it seems like he's making excuses. But he's not. He had no idea that the stuff he said to a reporter was going to end up getting published. The nerve of that reporter. How Mike Puma isn't fired is beyond me. Not quite. Someone else (Ron?) told the post he had the oblique injury, and when Puma asked him about it he said "We're not going to talk about that, it's not important" Puma I guess, continued to push for quotes and Ike obliged. Guess he could've stuck to his "let's not talk about that" bit, but of course then Puma would've wrote he was hurt last year and refuses to talk about it.
  6. local blackouts still apply of course. It might be the premium version, given that you already have Extra Innings, but who knows. If you want to watch other teams, it's great. Also useful, I believe, is that you can watch/download older games. So say you're looking for a clip or highlight or even a Ralph Kiner conversation, you can grab that game and find it.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: Boras is suggesting that Drew and others might sit out until June, which would certainly cost the players munny and a part of their legacies, but could be a big blow against what's left of the compensation system. Sitting out may be beneficial to the labor agreements/compensation clauses, but I hope Drew and others realize they're mostly being used as pawns by the players association/agents for that cause. Sitting out will be detrimental to them personally I would think. They'll clearly get less (unless they're hoping to make a "you're desparate!" plea?) for less work. And I wonder how they'll be perceived in terms of teammates and work ethic for sitting out half the season, especially if they end up somewhere that just misses the playoffs.

  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: But on the bright side, maybe there's a medical reason for his underwhelming past performance, rather than that he just isn't up to the expectations cast upon him. I certainly hope this is true, and that Ike once again becomes the player we've seen flashes of, but at this point I'm not going to believe it, or count on it, until it happens. I suspect he's more likely to muddle and suck like he has the past two years. Except he had approximately equal very good periods as very bad ones each of the last two years.
  10. Lefty Specialist wrote: Unfortunately, every time he's in a slump we'll never know if he's hiding an injury or just sucks. true of pretty much every player ever. This is really just a twist on "best shape of my life" Just in the "Oh, I was hurt/sick last year. But I feel great now!"
  11. metirish wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: One year, $8 million. He's one of the free agents who turned down the $14 million qualifying offer. much angst on twitter about this deal, it seems the writers can't help but take the Mets to task for spending their $8 million on Young and not Cruz, as if that was so cut and dry several months ago....God they are annoying. I'd rather have Young anyway. Writers can be so whiny.
  12. Frayed Knot wrote: WOR's current on-air personalities are mostly syndicated shows. This move indicates that they're trying to capitalize the Mets lead-in and shake things up with a little local flavor at the time of night when FAN will often be involved with Yanx games, Yanx post, or be heavy on Yanx talk for the hour or two after that game is over. And, since it's the middle of the summer, the only other sports outlet in town--ESPN radio--will probably be talking football. wise move too, given that Yankee games generally go longer you'll keep guys looking for sports talk even that would prefer WFAN. And Yankee fans that don't want to listen to the postgame.
  13. Edgy MD wrote: You know, the WFAN and the Mets knew they weren't bringing Wayne Hagin back, and Hagin for his part said he didn't want to come back, but the announcement that Lewin was hired didn't come until mid-February. So maybe this is just how things get done, especially for a new outlet. perhaps. And hell, they probably should do their due diligence and research the guy before just keeping him. If Masur is true I'm sure he'll also be getting those third guy games when Josh is doing whatever it is he's doing and Howie's doing [crossout]Islanders playoff.[/crossout].. I mean, when they take days off. They didn't retain Coleman or Duquette so I guess they do need someone that can do PbP.
  14. Hagin's deals were both for 2 years I believe, and so was..Robertson? Tom.. something.. before him. edit: McCarthy right? Way to be memorable Tom.
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: Bobby V used to talk about being 'three deep' at each position. That didn't mean you'd actually want to use the third guy, only that you had one in mind if the extra-innings/PH-ing/in-game injuries all piled up at the same time. IOW, if Flores is that 3rd SS and winds up playing there for a handful of innings over the year then I think we can live with it. sure, if we're talking an emergency start or a couple of reallly late innings when you'd rather Flores bat in the lineup than Tejada's.. still concerned about the _second_ guy though.

  17. Edgy MD wrote: They went 8-11 vs. Miami last year. Certainly that can be upgraded to 12-6 or 13-6. But the world doesn't work that way all the time, does it? What's the key to beating teams with good pitching and lousy hitting? I would guess it's clean execution/good baserunning. Put yourself in the best position to get/make the one break that can be the difference in a low-scorer. Don't get Juan Pierre'd to death in 2014! Can that be the Mets motto this year? I agree though, I think the Mets put themselves in a lot of 'one bad break screws you' situations last year based on lack of offense. Having fewer complete (like Ike Davis .141, Quintanilla, etc) holes in your lineup should help you squeeze across insurance runs by bunching more hits together hopefully.

  19. Edgy MD wrote: They're definitely the opponent in recent years against whom I think we regularly lose winnable games. They had a good bullpen, we had a fairly inept bench and offense in general. But yeah, there were a couple of those games. a couple of blowouts too. edit: RA/RS was 76-88. They scored more against the Phillies, but that was the highest otherwise.
  20. The best way the Mets can improve this year is beat the Marlins like they're the Marlins. That's good for a 3-4 game boost over last season.
  21. Nationals are interesting. They added Fister, who's very good, but they won 86 games last year. They're counting on things like health and improvement from the rest of the team to get over 90 wins and that always makes me wary. Some over/unders have them at 90. that seems to be a good number to me. They've got the star power that can certainly put it together and win a lot more, but I could see them at around 86 again too.
  22. newest dude is Matt Ehalt for the Record. I've forgotten already who he's replacing. But I'd have a hard time connecting writer->paper overall I think.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Bill Madden speculating that Steve Boras may actually let Drew go unsigned past Opening Day. bluff? It seems like he'd only _lose_ value (unless they're gambling on an injury) as teams get through Spring Training and make decisions and plans for the roster without him.
  24. not a huge fan, but it's a lot easier to type Thor than Syndergaard (which is surprising easy to spell actually)
  25. metsmarathon wrote: . i'm not sure if i like that in-season trades strip away the compensation pick. i always tended to like that feature as it boosted the trade market. I think it might have been suppressing the trade market a little actually, as teams started to realize it'd be better to hang on to those guys. Especially when those guys were on non-contending teams that probably wouldn't be able to afford them in FA. Unless you find a team that wants him and is willing to give you specific players/prospects that you really want, you'd often be more inclined to pick your poison in the draft. But on the other hand, the acquiring team knew they'd be getting a draft pick too so wouldn't be as worried about tossing a prospect maybe they weren't as thrilled with in trade.
