  1. This is the last time you think about Jeff Walters.
  2. I'd sign him for the league minimum if they release him. over the past 5 years he's put up a 92 OPS+ .253/.317/.397 slash line and I'd expect the .397 to come down outside of CBP. Tejada's .12 and '11 were better than what Rollins did last year. Fangraphs has Rollins as still an above average baserunner and defender, but I'm a little skeptical and with another year of age? stole 22/28 last year and 30/35 which is still a good rate but it's been falling too. I'm not giving up deGrom for that. lower level pitching prospect? sure.

I think it's more that they were so convinced about his lack of short-itude that they moved him to the place where they thought he'd be best suited, regardless of the fact that they were locked in for the next 5-10 years there. They deliberately placed him in a place where he'd probably be logjammed, not that they deliberately logjammed him. I'll stipulate that he's at least a keylet, though. Basically. Well, If Flores can hit like he's shown and not embarrass himself at SS, that's certainly a key swing, but it's the downswing that doesn't exist. If he hit's like Quintanilla and his defense makes Jeter look rangy he's not going to play and therefore won't hurt them. Really the expectations for SS in general are so low that it's hard to see it as key to anything.
  4. http://deadspin.com/somethings-going-on-between-ryne-sandberg-and-jimmy-ro-1542994018 Rollins and Sandberg already don't like each other. FeUD!
  5. well, can you get Fios? You can't get any Mets (or Yankees) games on mlb.tv. doesn't matter where they're playing. The idea being that if you're in an area that can get a local broadcast of a team, you can't get it on mlb.tv. You could get fancy and set up proxy servers and what not, but speed would be hurt unless you found a good one and that's usually a paid service. I know there are streaming services like Hulu+ and what not, for TV stuff. And someone mentioned Chromecast (or roku) to facilitate that, but I've never used them. can only offer you sketchy-legality torrent solutions.

I had to sit down and pull each one out of my foot and out of my sneaker. I suppose that's one of the perils of training in Arizona. Better to train in Florida, where the worst thing you can step on is an alligator. I believe the stories say he was barefoot.
  7. Alderson, when asked about the Braves' move, assumed the questioner was making the exact leap many armchair general managers did: When are the Mets going to get as bold as Atlanta did? "You mean in terms of our shortstop situation?" Alderson said. "Were you going to ask that as the next question? . . . I don't think has any significant bearing on us."
  8. metirish wrote: ugh, must everything be viewed through a Mets prism? New York Post Sports ?@nypostsports #Braves had a hole at pitcher and immediately filled it. The #Mets have had a hole at SS all spring and still nothing http://nyp.st/1kiBmUN Post training consists of "If you can't find a way to knock the Mets in a tweet, don't send it." Of course, Harvey went down and the Mets signed Colon to a 2 year deal.
  9. right, it was the continued proving that he CAN hit that forced them to start evaluating where he can play. Now, it's not like Tejada is a great SS defensively. he's about average and had a sub-par season there defensively as well. Does the increased offense make up for the hit in defense? I'm not sure.. Duda was 18% better than average last year at hitting and basically had all his value erased via defense. and a lot more balls get hit to SS. And the other positions just don't really work without a trade of some sort. He's probably 4th or 5th on the 1B depth chart, and Murphy's got second plus Satin (and even Eric Young Jr) can play there too.
  10. Edgy MD wrote: They haven't moved Flores to third base, if that's what you're suggesting. He played first, second, and third last season, but mostly second. After they moved him OFF of SS in 2011 he played mainly 3rd. 87 games versus 27 second. That was still A+/AA. It feels like once he showed he was likely to be able to hit, and they moved him to AAA, they started considering more about _where_ he could play. And all last year, while we had a disaster at SS in the majors, no one thought "hey, why not try him at SS again?" That's telling to me.
  11. TheOldMole wrote: Wilmer Flores. They said Murphy couldn't play second, and they're actually still saying it, but he's playing it well enough to help the club. If Flores can play short well enough, and can hit, he'll make a big difference in the club, even if it's only as attractive trade bait. They, and only some, doubted Murphy could play second well, but he hadn't done so before. They DID play Flores at short, evaluated him, and decided he couldn't do it. So much so that they moved him to a position blocked by their star player. Maybe the defense becomes less important as they grasp for offense, but I still think it's a Spring Training "explore all options" thing here.
  12. If it made ESPN's top stories I know it must not be one, and will continue to ignore it.
  13. Edgy MD wrote: History suggests that bad teams get about the same number of save opportunities as good teams. Makes sense really. You only get save opportunities when you're winning, so winning teams should get slightly more, but the difference is probably mitigated by good teams outscoring their opponents by a lot more often.
  14. he'll get promoted this year and throw some pitches. many of them will be good pitches.
  15. There's also the idea that standing firm on Hairston, and being willing to take nothing helped land the haul they ultimately got for Byrd. Sandy had history on his side when he said "This is my final offer. take it or leave it." and the other teams would believe that he wouldn't take less than that. This is the price, and you'll pay it or you don't get him. Whereas if they had dumped Hairston for nothing, the Pirates maybe wait another day or two figuring Alderson will get desperate and take less. Long con.
  16. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Sure but the point is had anyone raised the possibility of those two in any deal they'd have sure drawn a w"we'd be lucky if they bring us a half-eaten hot dog lolrofl!!11" response. Little bit of special situation there given the knuckleball-catcher pairing, but mostly crappy guys get thrown into package deals all the time. "Need someone to stand in LF for a couple of weeks" "need someone to fill out a AAA rotation cause we're promoting some guys and don't want to rush the AA guys yet" It's somewhat amazing how often major league organizations simply need bodies.
  17. projecting Granderson to hit his head, twice, and never be the same player does seem like a stretch. Bay had a 105 OPS+ his first year with the Mets. it's not great, but if Curtis does that it will hardly sink the Mets.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: Braves rotation already in loads of potential trouble. - Kris Medlen, who left the game v the Mets last week, now has confirmed "ligament damage" in his pitching elbow, although they've yet to determine (or talk about) the extent of the problem. - Brandon Beachy is going to be missing at least one spring start with "arm tightness around the elbow and bicep soreness". He's already a veteran of two elbow surgeries (including TJ) is a candidate for starting the season on the DL - Mike Minor has also been dealing with injuries and could start the year on the DL boom, Ervin Santana.

  20. 58.2 IP over 70 games. Slight better year than last year. 3.42 ERA. Mainly by pitching to fewer righties than the 75/213 he did last year. Never gets Chase Utley out.
  21. Best pitcher in the bullpen again. unless they do put Mejia there? whatever. He's the relief ace. I think he'll give up a few more home runs this year though. For a guy that throws a billion miles an hour he certainly doesn't give up a lot of bombs, only 1 last year. I think that regresses some and leads to a couple of bad innings here and there, which is certainly better than giving up soft grounders that fielders boot and blow saves. 8-3, 2.85 ERA, 35 SV, 65 IP, 60 K, 3 HR. He'll strike out Bryce Harper and Jason Heyward (Separate games probably) to end a game. Valverde teaches him a "closer move" to do after his saves this year.
  22. I expect him to put up nearly a .999 OPS in Vegas, get a call up in June for ~15 days to replace someone, hit .150/.200/.300 with 1 HR over 20 PA (I have no idea if that's possible to match the slash line, and don't care) get demoted again, and then traded in July.
  23. Lefty Specialist wrote: Agree on Granderson. We're all assuming Duda/Davis will suck, but we're all assuming the Grandy Man will be good. If he's not, we've got 4 years of crap to look forward to. See: Bay, Jason. Eh, I'm assuming both Duda and Davis are unlikely to suck. And if one of them does, they won't have the rope to hang themselves/us with. Granderson as well, doesn't seem a likely candidate to completely suck. the swing just doesn't seem like it'd be that far.
  24. I'd have to look up the rules again. I think minor leaguers can appear in games willy nilly but guys on the 40 man option to the minors can't?
  25. Tempted to say d'Arnaud, but I'm going with Ruben Tejada (and/or Stephen Drew?). If he can put up a .350 OBP type year again he's worth quite a bit more than the SSs of last year. It'd be a big swing and right now I see SS as the biggest potential to be an absolute black hole in the lineup, killing rallies left and right.
