I have no idea if he can actually play there but he might hit enough to try. If we're going to go that route, why not go with a young, cheap version of the same in Los Flowers? because the guy's only tool is power and it's Citi Field. I'd bet on Duda, Davis or Satin (And probably Flores too) all outperforming him given equal opportunity and we already have those.

And on the hook for the season after next ... and the one after THAT. Fair enough, but on the other hand I think not having Alex might be what keeps the Yankees out of the playoffs this year.
  3. wtf? We let you use our place and you fire freaking cannons at the walls?

  5. That Kiner played against the Boston Braves blows my mind a little bit.
  6. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Reports say that Boras is looking for a multi-year deal with a "opt out" after the first year. Which means that if he's good in 2014, you lose him, and if he sucks, you're stuck with him for multiple years. It doesn't seem like any rational team would go for that. Well, if you sign him for 2-3 you are stuck with him anyway. That works for me. Hope he's good this year, hope he opts out, get an extra draft pick to supplement the one that _hopefully_ won't be protected and you might lose by signing someone else. Gives you the freedom to pursue other free agents next year without giving up on having a first round pick.
  7. Realized I only had crappy pictures of Ralph Kiner Night and none of him actually on the field. [fimg=600:1hd4skbd]http://www.ceetar.com/optimisticmetsfan/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/KinerNight.jpg[/fimg:1hd4skbd]

He made a point at the end of his career about having no interest in coaching or managing because the game and the lifestyle were just so slow and he has such a restless mind. (Whether this is a product in part of his addiction, or perhaps a factor in it, is a matter of speculation.) He likes being a rich and successful man and he lives far away from the ballpark, but I think he likes the comeraderie, and as he's aging and twice divorced (like Ralph), maybe boredom will keep him coming back. It's a push and a pull. Baseball may not be enough of a lifestyle solution for a restless mind, but on any given day it's a great solution for a few hours. Actually the "pop in occasionally when schedules collide and when you feel like it" probably works well for Keith. Maybe he doesn't have 20 more years of GKR every day stuff (not that he doesn't take a good 30 games off a year anyway) but yeah I could see him enjoying popping in every once in a while.
  9. Edgy MD wrote: Keith may never be the gent Ralph is, but in his acumen, his curiosity, his life of baseball stories and connections, and his utter genuineness, he's a great figure to carry on Ralph's legacy. Indeed. But will Keith still be willing to pop into the booth in 2041 to tell stories about Lou Brock and the 1970s?

Edgy MD wrote: I imagine Spring Training is absolutely the worst time of year for the equipment staff, but here's hoping they pull a few allnighters and sew a memorial to Ralph Kiner onto the shoulders of about 80 uniforms. No real games for a couple of weeks yet. time to get it done in that regard. Also, all season long. They can't do too little here. the Pirates will do something I imagine too right? Might be cool to have a special day against the Pirates.
  11. sad.
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Not that Mike Francessa needs me defending him but that is really small of Kay. Thing is, I can't see how being a part of the garbage-time simulcast on a local cable channel is even prestigous to begin with. I mean, whatever channel Fatcessa ends up on (MSG, or SNY or whoever) couldn't be any worse, and having seen Kay on MFY games and as a Centerstage host I can't believe YES thinks we want any more of him. Plus, during baseball season Kay's not on set half the time, so I guess we'll get a still headshot. right, exactly. It's not like Yankee fans are like "well, it's 4pm on a Tuesday, I wonder if there is a game on? No..but I guess I'll watch Kay now that I've turned it on" But yeah, it's easy enough to fill the garbage time, but I just don't think stations like SNY or YES really care about that time, since so much of the actual ratings come from the game. But yeah, I'd love to MST3K a game with fun things like "This was Eric Valent's only home run this season" and such. I don't know that I would make a point to record and watch it though.
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: Kay & LaGreca not exactly being subtle with that Coke bottle, were they? Why are shows like these simulcast? -- because there are more sports networks then there are programs to fill them so duplicating a radio show is a cheap and easy way to fill the daytime hours when actual sporting events are rarely being played. I think there are fewer shows NOT being televised than ones that are. yeah, lots of dead time. I meant more from a "why do we care?" I guess if you're working at home or not working it's easier to flip on the TV than the radio these days. I know it's nice sometimes that they can play highlights and such, but most of the time I don't really want to look at Michael Kay or Francesa while/if I'm listening to them.
  14. nevermind not getting the appeal of these shows, any appeal they have is the captive audience/listening in the car/workspace stuff. I can't imagine why we need them on TV. That said, when Sports Bars have them on I can't figure out why they don't put on closed captioning.

  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I can totally see Satin ending up playing first base against lefty starters if Duda and Davis both struggle. And the chances for that seem reasonably high. Well Duda has been an above average offensive player for most of his career, whereas Satin has a couple bucketfulls of appearances and it's not like they're better AB for the most part. But if the Mets move Davis I do see Satin getting a lot of lefty games at first. and second?
  17. I'm certainly supportive of a Duda/Satin 1B leadoff platoon.
  18. as my other league reminds me, Dodgers D-Backs in Australia 3/22 starts the season. It's just two games but let's stick to drafting before that. Gonna say 3/19 at 8:30 EST and let's try to make this work.
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Is this the first time that this lender-imposed payroll ceiling has become public knowledge? Or did I just miss it somehow? (I confess, I haven't been doing anything more than briefly skimming those thousands of Megdal articles that have been posted here.) I hadn't heard that before either. But I'm having trouble discerning if that's something new the Post is discovered or an assumption based on allusions and comments from ownership/Sandy/etc. But it doesn't really matter, because Kong's right, there is 7 sets of books. They've been using one to make it look like they lost 10 million last year, but they likely could've reworked it, factored in SNY money, or assigned something to this account rather than that account and make it look like they had 10 more million they could've spent on the team without hitting a supposed loan-imposed cap.
  20. Zvon wrote: When it comes to "no win" I'm talking in relation to the fans. Ceetar, so even people that support the Wilpons as owners think that they don't give a shit about the fans? Isn't that special. And I'm talking about now. In 2006 the Wilpons weren't in my doghouse. I had moved them to the outhouse at one point but they didn't make the doghouse until our payroll started to dwindle. We're watching millionaires play sports for teams owned by billionaires signing billion dollar deals with TV companies. They (and pretty much all of them) care about us only so far as it's good PR to be on good terms with the fans. The vitriol directed at the Wilpons pretty much makes it no win for them in that regard anyway. I dunno. Let's say we're at the 2017 World Series parade for the Mets. are you actually less happy if it's the Wilpons that still own the team than if it's "Random rich financial big-wig you haven't heard of before"?
  21. you think they care about the fans? They'll enjoy winning. You say it now, but if they were actually to win the World Series more fan would prefer they stay the owner than rolling the dice with someone else. It's not like we root for the owners. And by fans, I don't mean bloggers and people that breakdown lineups in January. They're not going to be doing Twitter chats with fans now or then, but the attitude will go back to mostly indifference. People mocked them and wanted Doubleday back and all that in '04, but you didn't hear much about that sorta thing in '06. there were other things to talk about.
  22. Nymr83 wrote: The worst defensive shortstop ever plays across town, sp why not? you saying we should just start Duda there?
  23. Zvon wrote: Some would say a World Series appearance and all would be forgiven. I don't think so. forgotten not forgiven. Nobody praises the owners but no one will talk about them much.
  24. yes yes, but has Molly?
  25. Edgy MD wrote: Edgy MD wrote: I'm sorry. I promise not to talk about anything. no no, we can talk about it. That's fun. Flores to SS is humorous. Trying to figure out how to make Duda work in LF is funny. It's acting like this stuff is even remotely likely that's sorta silly. Reporting it like they're talking about it any more seriously than we are. I don't know about remote. It's more likely after Alderson's statement than it was before, and it's completely (almost literally) out of left field, which makes it exciting to me, even if it doesn't come to pass (and Duda did play left field! and right too!)), because I like that my team is considering game-changing maneuvers. When I treat it like a fait accompli, please let me know. I'd rather point it out before people start treating it like a fait accompli.
