He's a good hitter, dirtbag type, but could he play center field? Turns out it was none other than Tracksuit Martino who kinda suggests: Another As player to monitor is outfielder Josh Reddick. The Mets inquired about Reddick, but came away dubious that Beane would trade him, according to sources. But were keeping an eye on this player, who would help this non-existent offense. Looks like he plays CF like Granderson plays CF. he knows what to do there but isn't really a good option. (just reading his stats and usage there) Decent enough player. Could be useful.

Nymr83 wrote: ok next guessing game: number of days until the same fans who clamored for Conforto to be brought up start complaining that the Front Office brought up Conforto who "clearly wasn't ready"? it shouldn't take long. If he doesn't hit, but the end of the Nats series. If he does hit, the criticism will be they should've done it earlier. If he doesn't hit, it's because of Kevin Long. if he doesn't hit, it's on Sandy for not having drafted better options. if he hits sorta 'meh'ish, it'll be on Collins for not playing him more. if he hits sorta 'meh'ish, it'll be on the Mets for throwing him into the fire and expecting him to be a savior. Some of the complaints probably hinge on what else happens this week.

It'd be hard to accept doing absolutely nothing, even if David Wright managed to get into a rehab game in that time (he won't) and hit a HR. and d'Arnaud was activated and Cuddyer said his knee felt magically fine. (although if all three of those things happen the Mets probably make the playoffs) *Bolding mine. Given the uncertainty around Wright's injury and Cuddyer's ineffectiveness even before his injury, I'm not sure "probably" is the word I would use there. "More likely"? Maybe. I'm ready for d'Arnaud to return whenever he is. Well more likely is a given. They're better hitters. I'd argue Cuddyer's been hurt probably this entire time. and Wright is awesome so if it progresses to the point where he's in games and not dying from it I have a lot of confidence in his ability to help. Also, the Nats kinda suck and have their own problems.

  7. No, I'm just waiting to see what else is served before declaring the whole meal a disaster based on the waiter dropping the second course.
  8. Centerfield wrote: I give you a choice of two batters to hit in the middle of your lineup. Group A is hitting .170 and .190 respectively. Group B is hitting .280 and .300. You know nothing else about them. Only an idiot would select Group A. ) luckily it's NO LONGER 1920 and we DO know a lot more about each of them.
  9. Also Sandy said Wright's money not relevant because he's telling you spin and lies because he doesn't tell you anything. He also said they're prepared to take on contracts. Maybe it's not relevant because they have plenty of room. or maybe he's lying about the first part. Either way, you can't point to this one part of his comments and say "THAT, THAT was truth and not spin because it fits my opinion about what's going on"
  10. d'Kong76 wrote: Ceetar wrote: But getting David Wright back should be irrelevant to what they do this week, trade wise. Right, it should be. But I ain't drinking the kool-aid that's labeled that it's not relevant. They're gonna dick us again. again? I don't see how it's relevant or how it's ever been billed as such. Sandy's not an idiot. He knows at best we've got maybe 5 weeks of Wright this year and the offense sucks NOW.
  11. d'Kong76 wrote: Ceetar wrote: fuck batting average and fuck batting order statistics like that. Big fucking deal. They're so next to meaningless. Since 1920 is not meaningless, that's almost a century of baseball. Correct. BUT. in say 1950 we thought batting average meant something. We weren't as understanding about the role of luck in the game. We weren't aware of how small a sample 120 AB is. Mayberry is better than he's shown through the first half of the season. There is a lot more data supporting that than there is that he will hit .170 or whatever. We're not George Steinbrenner making stupid snap decisions based on the flurry of the moment. There needs to be a thought out and reasoned approach. (btw, he's got a .203 BABIP) We maybe should wait until the end of the season to see if the front office failed or not. At least until the end of this week. It'd be hard to accept doing absolutely nothing, even if David Wright managed to get into a rehab game in that time (he won't) and hit a HR. and d'Arnaud was activated and Cuddyer said his knee felt magically fine. (although if all three of those things happen the Mets probably make the playoffs) Anyway, it's hard to have backup plans upon backup plans. Before the season started, you'd be hard pressed to find someone to say that Clint Robinson was a better backup bench guy than Mayberry (or even Kirk) and yet, that backup plan has went swimmingly for the Nats and not for the Mets.
  12. Buster Olney tweeted this yesterday: Elias--The Mets became the 2nd team since 1920 to start No. 4 and No. 5 hitters with batting averages under .180 and at least 100 ABs This is pathetic. Absolutely inexcusable. And unfortunately, absolutely predictable. The front office will use injuries as an excuse, but every team has had injuries, including Washington. Bad luck happens. And when it happens, legitimate contenders field a lineup that is weaker than they hoped, but still competitive. You only get stupid lineups like this when you aim for mediocrity. It sickens me that we've gone through 5 years of rebuilding to end up here. fuck batting average and fuck batting order statistics like that. Big fucking deal. They're so next to meaningless. Now yes, the Mets offense sucks. They've dealt with quite a few injuries and under performances. They didn't get a shortstop, though one wasn't really available either. But we're in a down offensive era, with an understanding on the meaningless of batting averages. John Mayberry Jr. has very good numbers against lefties over 600 PA. It was a good signing, to be used for just this occasion. I'd make that move every season to bolster the bench. It hasn't worked out, but why should we assume it won't going forward?
  13. I'm with Edgy on this. He's fucking David Wright. If he'd had his leg amputated he'd still be a candidate to improve the offense. I'm not getting into the conspiracy theories. it's too exhausting and people have mostly made up their minds anyway. But getting David Wright back should be irrelevant to what they do this week, trade wise. I personally would've taken Aramis Ramirez, and would take a similar type guy. What's the worst that happens? You have a pissed off mercenary? fuck 'em. He'd get plenty of time anyway, even if David Wright DID come back for September. And before we get all "The seasons slipping away" let's not forget the Nats are JUST AS INEPT as us. literally nearly identical run/game this month, were equally ineffective against Kershaw just last week. Got dominated last night too: "Through four hitless innings, Liriano racked up nine strikeouts and fielded three groundouts back to the mound himself." Liriano had just skipped a start and tired and the Nats scored 2 garbage runs in the 9th, but they didn't have a prayer at winning that game.
  14. Nymr83 wrote: his OBPs are gag-worthy, sign me up for Zobrist instead. He doesnt play CF, doesnt play the infield, and is a huge downgrade from Granderson. Are we giving up on Cuddyer already? because thats the only spot he could fill and i dont think he's an upgrade even there if Cuddyer is at all healthy. I would pass on trading anything of much value for him as i cant see where he reasonably fits on the team. the Cuddyer unhealthy thing is the only reason the Mets would trade for a strict outfielder. Of course, Cuddyer could be non-DLd and still be hurt and it's easy to see how that's been the case for months. Of course, Maybe this is something you do anyway if the price is right. Worst that happens is you lose Mayberry and Cuddyer and Cespedes (And rotate in some rest for Granderson) would have to fight for time. Mets have 5 more DH games too. But yeah, I'd prefer Zobrist. he's good, and versatile. I'd even take Aramis Ramirez and see if you can get some change of scenery spark out of him. He's hitting better than Flores regardless.
  15. Does he quote anyone or is he just rambling again? Also either he can help the team or he can't. helping the team means having to play against guys like Kershaw. If you need to ease him in against rookies and weak starters, there's a place for that, and it's called AAA.
  16. MFS62 wrote: If the Mets hadn't used him in a sub role a few nights ago, they could have post- dated Cuddyer's DL stint and called up Conforto almost two weeks ago. I guess what I'm saying is if the Mets had wanted to bring up Conforto, they could have done it by now. Later If they're gonna DL Cuddyer they'd want to give him 15 days anyway. The bruise isn't going to heal in that time anyway. Pretending Cuddyer is going to play might be a bluff from Alderson to not seem as desperate for an outfielder too.
  17. so Eric Campbell is 229 of 336 players with as many AB(with data) as him. Tejada 326, which is an interesting case since Tejada's always had a high LD% which was usually the best proxy we had for this. Duda's 61st. Cuddyer 15th. Lagares 47th. Plawecki 298. Granderson 144th. Murphy 272. Those are maximums. Average? 25 Duda (92ph) 62 Lagares 92 Plawecki 108 Murphy 152 Granderson 172 Cuddyer 200 Campbell 317 Tejada (84mph) Stanton averages 97.73, quite a bit ahead of #2 Cespedes at 93.66

I figured he was getting a pass early on because of the wins, but now? it's because, much like last year, he has more good starts than bad but the bad ones are quite the clunkers. bad timing on the last one, because he's gotta be the obvious trade guy. Colon for Aramis Ramirez, Mets pay both salaries. Salary dump!
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: This is a great stat. I always thought that these new hit rate/speed/velocity/trajectory secret proprietary under the hood hit location stats of batted balls are more telling then the conventional stuff we have access to. I'd bet anything --anything-- that meaningful sample sizes of this "exit velocity" stat correlate very positively to a batter's success about as well as any other stat under the sun. Obviously, you can't use the stat in a vacuum, so that someone with excellent exit velocity who strikes out half the time, has big problems. But you can say that about any stat. That someone might strike out a lot doesn't undermine the value of exit velocity stat. Hitting the ball hard is what baseball's all about because the faster the ball gets to where it's destined to go, the less chance the fielders have of getting to the ball. You have to consider the stat in combination with other stats, just like in everything else. Yes, that. Not to mention they wouldn't bother investing in the technology and labor to measure that stuff if it didn't have some potential value. It's hardly the specific reason they invested in the tech. I mean, they're getting like a terrabyte of data a day, this is merely a drop in the bucket. Some of the stuff they collect WILL turn out to be mostly useless if not totally useless.
  20. Zvon wrote: Lefty Specialist wrote: Ashie62 wrote: We have something going! Question is, 'How will they f*ck it up?' Who? The umps? That was not a swing (Duda). The rule is 100% subjective, so him calling it a strike literally makes it so.
  21. It's because we're just getting this data from StatCast available publicly. (Along with things like launch angle) No one's really sure how it correlates, but initial impressions seem to be "not as much as you'd think"
  22. I saw a couple of people tweeting Montero's name in connection. I think it might be a smidge less than that, but fierce competition too.. Also the A's lose a compensational draft pick by not getting to QO Zobrist, which factors into the price. A pick that the buying team doesn't get.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: I too was thinking of letting deGrom hit but it's tough to argue with even before the result turned out how it did. Mets bullpen has been so good that there isn't really a drop off from deGrom to Mejia/Parnell. Plus 1 less inning on Jacob's ledger.
