  1. I will watch this one in the town Vander Meer went to high school, just to prevent any such comparisons.

For his year as a whole, which included some early season starts, his WHIP was up around 1.5 and down the stretch 2 or more runners/outing became almost the norm for him even if he came away unscathed more often than not. Nice trick if you can get away with it but you usually don't for very long. He'll probably get slotted right into the 8th inning role (but you have to slot guys y'know) but it's not like we're getting a sure-fire set-up guy here. The one good thing is that having him in a non-closing role will hopefully tone down his post-inning dance act. . Bah, that's a bad thing in my eye. more post-inning dances please. He was pitching with a strained..hamstring? bicep? I can't remember. I wasn't even fully convinced he shouldn't still be starting. Regardless, I think he'll be useful and pretty good. Still pissed they bargained away the postseason eligibility. Basically, Mejia may or may not be done serving his suspension. That's BS.
  3. Eventually I'll catch up on the Marvel Universe. Having watched Agents of SHIELD and knowing about the tie-ins made this feel a little flashbacky from 2015. Also could see plenty of the Civil War setup going on. The actual movie itself was ok. At times it felt like a buddy comedy with Black Widow and Captain America. I can't figure out why, despite Winter Soldier being clearly competent at catching the shield, Cap kept throwing it at him. There was definitely a bit of "Hey, let's CGI the shield bouncing off stuff" feel to a lot of the action scenes. In fact, the shield seems placed in scenes where it's almost unnecessary. a little bit of heavy handed allegory there.
  4. Robles? He's got the worst numbers, including poor BB and K rates.
  5. Edgy MD wrote: I don't know that anybody's done it, but I think a manager's performance is quantifiable. Coaches, too. It's internally quantifiable maybe. We don't have access to more information than we do regarding what managers do.
  6. Edgy MD wrote: At least as an infielder, Eric Campbell is an infielder. To put a guy hitting like him in left is... very white-flaggy. I think it speaks to Lagares' injury too. He got the second game on Sunday off as well as Monday.
  7. media still seems to love him, so doubt the Mets feel compelled to make what will at best be a lateral move anyway, cause no way they're interviewing candidates mid-season.
  8. I'm sticking to them offering him the QO and him walking, as EVERY free agent does.
  9. Edgy MD wrote: By the nature of the strategy, trying to manufacture runs diminishes your chance for a big inning while committing to the plating of a single run. Eh on you too. Can you tell me where people are generally trying to be cute? That squeeze last night was seemingly the first one called this season, clearly uncharacteristic and born of desperation, and clearly executed poorly by all three players involved. And it was probably a bad call by the manager. no, right there. I agree with all those things about the squeeze. There have been some hit and runs and whatnot the last few days too, seemingly born of the same desperation. I think it's exacerbating the problem. My 'eh' was that I don't really care if they should or shouldn't be better at manufacturing runs. Murphy's back now, and maybe Tejada, are the guys with the contact rates. Everyone else is too Two True Outcomes (Because apparently no one homers anymore) to be too creative with it. It's an old school train of though that the hit and run sorta forces the swinger to focus on contact but that only works if contact is his game. For guys like Duda it probably gets him swinging at pitches he feels aren't as hittable, and probably plays right into the shift.
  10. Edgy MD wrote: It seems like a team with a punchless lineup should at least be more adept at manufacturing a run when they need it. But with no base stealers at the top of the lineup, terrible bunting execution, and pop outs and strikeouts looking with men on third and less than two outs, when all they need is a deep grounder or modestly deep fly... they're rather awful at manufacturing runs. They're a team that doesn't hit homers playing for the homer. Eh, basestealing and bunting. Chicken and egg lately. Are they failing to score runs because they're not executing, or is trying to manufacture runs causing them not to score runs. Stop getting cute and just put good swings on the ball. Perhaps some of these guys aren't talented enough, with enough bat control, to try to think about other things during the split second they have to decide to swing at a pitch and where.
  11. Centerfield wrote: Serious question, is anyone having fun watching these games? It's just three plus hours of torture. The first hour or so felt like it might be the day they broke through. Felt like a typical 'scratch out some baserunners but the good pitcher eventually strands them' type of game. But then they sorta floundered after that. I still enjoy watching though, I know that yesterday's/last week's results don't particular inform today's and that the runs are coming because that's baseball. For a whole myriad of reasons the offense will get better than that and ANY MOMENT could be that moment. But I've never been one of those fans that boos every strikeout when the team is slumping.
  12. TheOldMole wrote: I have a question. Sandy says he's willing to overpay for the right player. Now, Sandy has been around the business for a while, and is no fool, and even I (who am a fool) know that the only reason you would say that is if you don't really mean it. So what does he really mean? maybe he's saying "Try me."
  13. TransMonk wrote: Christ, that's pathetic. I don't know all there is to know about OPS, but isn't league average usually around .700? So, we had 7 below average guys (most woefully so) according to that metric? leaguewide OPS is .711. (.713 in June) .722 for Non Pitcher. (.724 in June) .727 for non pitcher NL. (.724 in June) .657 for June SSs leaguewide. (so yeah, not like there's a lot to trade for)
  14. Centerfield wrote: Fuck Cuddyer. Fuck Tejada. Call up Conforto and Reynolds. If Reynolds struggles move Wilmer back to short and call up Herrera. you know Wilmer sucks too right?
  15. I put the odds at roughly 95%, and that's probably low, that Kirk Nieuwenhuis would outperform Conforto at the MLB level during Cuddyer's absence. But hey, greener grass and all that.
  16. d'Kong76 wrote: Ceetar wrote: Cuddyer has all the makings of a guy that will disappear now for three weeks but come back on fire once he's healthy. One thing Cuddy won't do is disappear. He's constantly in front of a camera and microphone. I have no idea (other than you are the optimistic of the most optimistic) what you've seen to make you think he'll come back on fire? a long long career of being a good hitter coupled with confirmation that at least part of his decline this year is injury related not skills-declining related?
  17. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm hoping they go with Conforto for now. I have little doubt that he's been hurting for a while now, he never really got unstuck. Crazy thing is I also suspect Lagares and Duda are hiding injuries. They're not really hidden. We know Duda got hit on the knee and the exit velocity off his bat instantly dropped. We know Lagares had a chest/armpit thing. Both claim to be healed (and Lagares HAS picked it up lately so maybe). Lagares also has the arm/elbow thing. I can't date Cuddyer's injury, but going back a few weeks he requested a day off Sunday and then needed one again Tuesday. He was supposed to share the 2 DH games in Toronto with Granderson and took both. This past Sunday they played Mayberry Right on Right (and rested Lagares too) instead of putting Cuddyer back out there after the long resumed game. Cuddyer has all the makings of a guy that will disappear now for three weeks but come back on fire once he's healthy.
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: It'll come out shortly I'm sure that he's been hurting for a month. Probably shouldn't have tried to play through it and just did a DL stint. Especially as it clearly was affecting him. Guess we'll see Kirk anyway.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: Ceetar wrote: [Nieuwenhuis] has a .535 isolated slugging. Unfortunately his slugging is isolated to southern Nevada. He was only behind Duda in ISO last season and was .100 above league average. Not like Ceciliani is doing much of anything.
  20. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Not for nothing but Niuewenhuis is destroying it out there too. His vulnerability to the radical slump is no help to his career as a reserve but when he's hot, he's the one you want. he has a .535 isolated slugging.
  21. Centerfield wrote: Yikes. That is brutal. Given how the offense has been I'd guess this is where Washington pulls away for good. But you never know. Prove me wrong Mets! that would require Washington being great. and they're not.

  23. G-Fafif wrote: Mets have to stop acting like an American League franchise. Perhaps Matz is saving them in more ways than we knew. Especially since Buddy Carlyle and Jeurys Familia were our best hitters by OPS last season.
  24. G-Fafif wrote: Three Mets made that list. Can't believe Davey/Jerry/Terry never thought to use Nunez/Putz/Francisco to pinch-hit. 4! Willie/Bradford. Our moneyball star in retirement.
  25. I got excited because i saw Jim Abbott on this list. Would've been a great answer to this question except he played for the Brewers in 1999 and got two hits.
