Or, for that matter, what was the rush to get Niese out of there? Josh figured he just forgot how many outs there were. (Or maybe he assumed the DP?) I think I saw some 'get him out on a high note, get the good relievers in' notes on Niese. That might just be the public comments though.

  3. no, i think my point was that he just played 3 games against an AL team he'd seen like 7 times already this year. But sure, if your point is that Cespedes was a one-trick pony and teams that have seen him before can get him out. But the numbers don't seem to suggest that. It's not like he's a rookie and had his brief bout of success and then failed. He's having his best season yet. reversion to the mean means he'll settle in somewhere around .270/.318/.487 which would be pretty helpful. Not 1/18. Even Rey Ordonez wouldn't settle in at that level. I think the 2400 AB in his career, and the 635 this season, are much more reasonable exceptions for the next two weeks and the playoffs than 4 games.

Discuss Duda went on the DL and hasn't quite gotten his groove back. Cuddyer too with the wrist. They weren't going to win every game. d'Arnaud going through a little cooler period too. Obviously Cespedes wasn't going to hit a home run every game. It's not like NL pitchers have never seen him before (or that he was even facing NL pitching during the slump) or have no tape on him. He'll be fine. two weeks to find a groove again.

I don't care who the opponent is. Would anybody truly be surprised if neither one of them made it out of the fifth inning? in a tune-up game? not really. But I wouldn't be surprised if eitiher spun an 8-inning 4-hit gem either. and that equal chance of sucking or being great is the very foundation on which worry is built. also, drama, intrigue, baseball seasons and gambling debts.

Nats are playing the O's, who won't be complete pushovers. So get 'r done. Okay Mets, you have 13 games against softies to get everyone healthy and on track for the playoffs. use it wisely.

  9. Let's do this.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Gary Cohen and today's Daily News says that the Mets are on SNY tonight, but SNY's website says otherwise. Was it a late change? I plan to watch on TiVo-delay, so maybe I'll record on two channels, Extra Innings and MLBN. If I found out that Extra Innings is a YES telecast, then I can switch to the other. the schedule on mets.com says (said?) SNY. I just assumed. The Mets are never exclusively on MLBN though. it's either PIX or SNY.

  12. San Diego is at 1 and Arizona at 2 for elimination. Then it's only the Nats and the Giants waiting for the axe, meanwhile no American League teams have been mathematically eliminated.
  13. it's just getting unlikely the Mets will clinch at home is all.

  15. sharpie wrote: So now I've been to four games this year, which is more than in probably the last 10 or 12 years. All within the last six weeks. August 10, I saw them beat the Rockies 4-2 But then: August 16: Pirates 8 Mets 1 September 1: Phillies 14, Mets 8 September 16: Marlins 6, Mets 0 I'm done. The MLB At-Bat app can track your games/record. I wonder if the Mets tapped into this data before sending out playoff lottery invites ;-)
  16. Cespedes gives up the possibility of the Mets (though it was intended to be the As) giving him a bigger contract than he'd get given the fullness of time. The Mets wouldn't have had time to wait him out, or sign other guys to fill his role, or price those other guys. They'd be bidding against his theoretical value and wouldn't be able to say "fine, find something comparable and we'll match it"
  17. Farmer Ted wrote: Did the Mets have to pay to open that 5-day window. That kinda shit ain't free. Nah, it was more a mutually agreed upon thing, and was mostly a MLB rule exemption. Probably helped knowing someone on the rules committee. OFFICIAL PLAYING RULES COMMITTEE Sandy Alderson, Chair Jerry Dipoto Terry Ryan Chris Antonetti Brian Gorman John Schuerholz Sam Bernabe John Mozeliak Joe Torre and as long as we're not relying on small sample size recency results, let's not forget we don't have a solid answer for 2B or SS but three+ outfielders under contract. (Although a variety of different reasonable gambles for 2B at least. Dilson, etc)

  19. I think my biggest worry is endurance. The Mets are concerned with workloads and spending September helping their pitchers atrophy a little. With the possible exception of Familia, Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, and Matz are better pitchers than the Clippards and Reeds. There are a handful of innings that the Mets are going to give to relievers that the Dodgers are going to give to Kershaw and Grienke. This is mitigated, somewhat, by the possibility of using some of the starters in relief roles, but who knows how that shakes out.
  20. I find it hard to phrase it as 'expectations' since really anything can happen, but the Mets can be very competitive. Still seems like they're hurting themselves with Harvey, but the pitching is overall very good and that will play in the playoffs. They suddenly have offense, and while it won't be like it has been lately when they face better opponents, they've got the depth to still score. No easy outs, no easy innings. They can hang with any of these teams. I 'expect' them to win the World Series. I would be..satisfied? call it a successful/good season? if they win the NLDS. Eventually anyway. It took a few years before I thought of 2006 that way.

It doesn't mean we won't win the NLCS but I don't think it's unfair to consider it. We beat the Dodgers in the NLDS, beat the Cardinals in the NLCS*, and beat the Royals in the World Series. *The winning run scores on a walk-off passed ball through the legs of Yadier F*cking Molina I figured the game would end on Molina striking out looking on a Niese curveball, but either one.

  25. I've got the pitcher fatigue and Duda's little funk after getting so hot and Murphy's still hurt leg with pins in them to be worried about in a few weeks if they don't resolve, so much time to resolve. I do suspect, if random shut-downs and too much rest don't lull them into more fatigue, that the pitchers will all get a second wind, particularly as the idea of the playoffs really starts to sink in.
