Down the stretch they come (AL), 2013

Ceetar wrote: btw, is this the first time this year with the new IL format that a team is doing a two-team/one-city stop like the Giants are this week? - first Citfield then YSIII Seems to me that that would be the preferred way to do things if possible: Oakland on the IL sked this year? - knock off your Giants series at the same time. Hit the ChiSox & the Cubbies back-to-back, etc. Haven't noticed it before this year, but I remember it happening last year. Also interesting was both the Yankees and Mets going to Baltimore back to back. Next year the Mets go to SF/Oakland separately. I'm convinced they could optimize the schedule somewhat that way. One day, with rainouts/makeups, this will happen. One day. The Yankees will play the White Sox in the afternoon while the Mets are playing the Cubs, and then they'll switch for the evening part of the doubleheader. That would be fun. Even more fun would be if the Mets and Yankees just exchanged uniforms and impersonated each other. Wright is our Jeter, of course, so he gets to play shortstop. But would the Mets have anyone fat enough to be a Yankee pitcher? -
What do you think the fence addition that juts out is for? A Safe area/dugout kind place for games? A batting cage? And did other fields have that? I bet the fields still are standing down there. I might have to take me a trip to Florida. Maybe we raise some funds to subsidize your trip. Sell candy bars or something, or even try for a government grant. And then we could publish your findings in a pamphlet, under the CPF imprint. Searching for the Sadecki Spot: The Truth behind the Mystery. Seriously, this is all strangely fascinating.

Is New York still in the league?

Helton has about 4000 ABs at Coors, and a similar number on the road. That's not a small sample size. And the results are pretty clear: Split G GS PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS TB GDP HBP SH SF IBB ROE BAbip tOPS+ Home 1132 1075 4801 4000 867 1381 315 28 225 850 24 15 709 505 .345 .442 .607 1.048 2427 96 29 2 59 99 46 .347 119 Away 1103 1049 4600 3913 527 1124 271 9 142 547 13 14 624 657 .287 .386 .470 .856 1839 89 28 1 33 86 38 .312 80 Like some others (Walker, Dante Bichette and Vinny Castilla coming immediately to mind), Helton was a very good player made great (more than 20% better) when playing his home games in the best hitting park of his era... not just the best, but a historically disproportionate and perception-warping park. He had a 200 pt higher OPS at home, mostly based on the slugging numbers. Was it his "fault" for playing at Coors? uh, no. But neither should he be rewarded for playing there. So would you put a .290 BA /20 HR/.850 PS 1bman in the HOF? If you want to lower the bar that much, he goes in after Jeff Bagwell (obviously) as well as Keith Hernandez, Don Mattingly, Steve Garvey, Fred McGriff, John Olerud, Cecil Cooper, Will Clark, Al Oliver, Boog Powell, Dick Allen, Norm Cash and Gil Hodges (not to mention the PED guys, McGwire and Palmiero). And that's just off the top of my head. I agree with what you're saying, but I think Helton's numbers in a normal park would probably be a bit better than .290 BA /20 HR/.850. You're extrapolating from what he did on the road, but it's normal to do a bit better at home. (Olerud was an exception--if he'd played in better hitting parks, his awesomeness might not be a secret.) Larry Walker was a much better player than Helton--if he'd played somewhere else, he'd be a genuine Hall of Fame candidate. Not quite there, I think, but close. Unlike Castilla and Dante Bichette, he's someone whose reputation might actually have been hurt by playing in Colorado. His MVP was completely legit--his road numbers were terrific that year.

But what if the blue and orange glass panes were interspersed, along with some clear ones? dj - those windows on the top have six large panels apiece. For each window, what if one had two orange panels and one blue, the next two blue panels and one orange, etc. It would keep the overall look more open and airy, but add a blue and orange accent to the windows. There are four smaller panels on the bottom of the top windows - they can remain clear, or maybe add a color accent to one of each four. I'd love to see a Mets logo stained glass design on the middle window on the bottom. The other bottom windows can either remain clear or have a few colored accents - whatever you think works best. The large flat windows on the sides of the building could also have the occasional blue or orange panel as an accent. Yeah, I see what you're getting at. That would be more subtle, and more fun, than my version. I won't be at a computer with Photoshop for a while. Z, do you want to take a crack at this? -

Worked for Nebuchadnezzar. I have to ask ... how do you know this? You mean, how do I know this personally, or how does anyone know that Nebuchadnezzar built it? I know it because when I was a kid I read a book that speculated that Nebuchadnezzar's dragon, the one Daniel killed, was actually a kind of dinosaur that lingered into historic times, and that it's depicted on the Gate of Babylon. Fun stuff. And many years later I got to see the gate itself, or the reconstruction of it, using some of the original bricks, in Berlin. And we know Nebuchadnezzar built the gate because he left an inscription saying so: I built this. Nebuchadnezzar Until yesterday I never put it together that the Great Gate of Babylon was colored Mets blue and orange. -

As much as I would love a return of the shingles, I just don't think it would work with that brick facade... Yeah, the orange is too close to the color of the brick. It would have been better to make the brick itself blue and orange. Worked for Nebuchadnezzar. -

Lighter colored bricks, and big corrugated tin rectangles. And what the heck, some neon baseball players too. This idea isn't so far fetched, and to a degree, kinda do-able. They could remove random bricks from the existing facade and replace them with pastel colored orange blue and green bricks that match the colors of the old Shea shingles. Those shingles varied in size. The Mets could mimic this effect by installing several bricks of the same color next to each other to create pastel colored rectangular sections of brick in different sizes. On second thought, I don't know that the replacing bricks idea would work so well. Most of the existing facade is windows and openings instead of wall and surface. Would replacing some of the glass with orange and blue panes work? Original Shea had those orange and blue panels suspended from vertical wires. Don't know how it would look mashing with the current architecture but that can be done in virtually any spot in the stadium. I'd start by making that Citi Field sign blue and orange. Something like this? -

Zvon wrote: Looking for a lil help please. Also some information. That weekend the Mets played the Phils 5 times in three days. Does anyone know if these were scheduled or was one of the double header games a make up? They played a double header on Friday and then again on Sunday. All I can find at UMD indicates these were scheduled games. At least one of those games was probably a makeup game. That weekend was the first time the Mets and Phillies played in New York that year, but they were both off from Monday, April 20, through Wednesday, April 22. The obvious conclusion is that they were rained out on those days--either two games or three, depending on whether Monday was a travel day (the Phillies were coming from Chicago). If it was two games, then I'd guess that both of them were made up in those June doubleheaders; or, if one of the doubleheaders was already scheduled, the other game was made up in the doubleheader on Friday, August 14. If it was three games, then presumably two of them were made up in June and the third in August. The two teams ended up playing the full 18 games against each other that year. This is like one of those logic puzzles you see people doing on the train: Jane said she'd wear her red dress to the party, but only if Debra wore her blue dress, while Agnes said she'd dance with either Dave or Martin unless they both brought Zinfandel, in which case she'd dance with Olof, but only if he wore his bolo tie. Which couple accidentally punctured the host's daughter's inflatable giraffe? -
Which skin tone looks most correct? I imagine this is an individual taste kinda thing. Over the years I've noticed I see colors more vividly than other people - not quite Van Goghish but in that direction. Btw, thats like a poll question for everyone. I don't totally trust my eyes after working a pic for a long time. And let me rephrase the question: Which skin tone looks more like it would in a photograph? (In the Wes pics above^) I'd say number 1, though it could use maybe just a little more yellow. Number 2 is a bit too rosy. And number 3 might be the one if you took the saturation down a touch. But they're all pretty damn convincing.

Let's talk about Tim Lincecum
dinosaur jesus replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
Lincecum now, saying "Money, money"? I say No (No) No (No) No (No) No (No) No (No) With someone like that, you're paying for what he used to be and getting what he is now. That's a proven method for throwing your money away. You might get lucky, but I hope the Mets' future isn't based on hoping to get lucky. -
It's a total fluke. Even on a bad-hitting team, he should have more like fifteen runs. He's scored less than once every ten times he's been on base, but over his career he's scored once every three or four times, not counting home runs. That's a pretty typical ratio--in fact, it's where the Mets as a team are this year.

So is a gyroball called that because it's like a gyroscope, free to rotate about one or both of two axes perpendicular to each other and to the axis of spin? Or because it spins slowly like a hunk of lamb and beef on a spit, dripping delicious juices? And if it's the second, then how are you supposed to pronounce it? A waitress the other day asked me if I wanted Euro meat on my Greek omelette. I had no idea how to answer that.

I will try and get him in orange and blue at some point. He deserves it. He had 106 at bats in '64. He hit 20 HRs! He had 106 hits in 1964, in 450 at bats. He did hit 20 HRs, though. -

Not clear how firing the manager is supposed to improve the team, when everybody knows the problem is that they're old, injured, or not very good to start with (and probably don't have the money to do anything about it, locked into that ridiculous Ryan Howard deal). But that's an old story.
