  1. That only works if it's the catcher running. But still. Gosh, I don't know if even Jeter makes that play. That's how great it was.
  2. That's how you play defense, White Sox. Can we show you that again?
  3. Tried to field the ball off to his side, and never even touched it. Just watched it go by.
  4. Wrong thread!
  5. Ronnie doesn't know Harpo from Groucho (Gary said Ordonez looked like Harpo), but makes up for it with a pretty inside John Lennon reference. Pop culture score: Gary 1, Ronnie .5.
  6. Edgy MD wrote: It sure is, especially when you haven't been able to go for a few days. I haven't felt the same about that since I had Campylobacter.
  7. Isn't number 2 a good thing?
  8. Josh Satan. That came out a little more insect-like than devil-like, actually.
  9. I'm not gonna top that one, but I'll bite.
  10. Even if the umpire wasn't strictly wrong, it was still a weird call to make. The rule doesn't actually say that the ball has to be transferred to his hand cleanly. It says, "If the fielder has made the catch and drops the ball while in the act of making a throw following the catch, the ball shall be adjudged to have been caught. In establishing the validity of the catch, the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball and that his release of the ball is voluntary and intentional." Revere wasn't in the act of throwing, so the first part of that doesn't apply. The question is whether he had complete control before he released it, and I think it's pretty clear that he did. I'm glad it turned out to be not that important, except maybe to the Phillies' feeling of the world being against them, which I'm all in favor of. In favor of their feeling that way, that is, and in favor of the world actually being against them. Stick it to those Phils, world.
  11. It's a little unfair to Felix to put him in that group. He got his share of hits--over 1600 in his career, and probably well over 2000 if not for Ed Ott's high school wrestling flashback. And he used to hold the Mets' single-season record.
  12. Frayed Knot wrote: Zvon wrote: I don't like this. BJ Upton bobblehead night and it comes down to him. Not that I care, but what exactly has BJ Upton done to deserve a bobblehead night? Dude's been on the Braves for what, like 70 games so far and has gotten about 15 hits in that time. Come on, it's obvious. Everybody who comes to the game gets a free BJ. How can you top that for a promotion?
  13. Come gather round me, Parnellites, And praise our chosen man, Stand upright on your legs awhile, Stand upright while you can.
  14. Quintanilla thinks Heyward looked so good sliding into first, he does the same. Good going, Q.
  15. Fman99 wrote: Josh Edgin gets it done. Stupid Heyward slides into first and it doesn't help him any. Yeah, that was pretty dumbass. I'm kind of sorry I didn't get to see Heyward and Duda collide at full speed. It would have been like the time they ran those two locomotives together.
  16. You know, it's actually a little insulting how pissed Freeman was after he struck out. It's not like that was a huge opportunity--two outs, runner on first. It's like he thought Hawkins had no business striking out the mighty Freddie Freeman. A little pissed I'd understand, but he broke his damn bat over his knee.
  17. Have you done the one with Eric Young yet?
  18. Wait a minute. Was Recker actually out at first? I thought maybe he beat it out, but they were too busy gabbing with the parents to look at it again.
  19. If Wright fields that ball in the eighth, it's a completely different discussion.
  20. Some misinformation from Gary and Ron. They said the last pitcher with a career ERA under 2.30 after his first 25 starts was Dwight Gooden. Not true. Dwight's ERA after 25 starts was 3.02. The same digits, though, just in a different order. Someone with dyslexia at Elias?
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: It seems almost inevitable that Matt Harvey will one day (and perhaps soon) pitch a no-hitter, doesn't it? Perhaps very soon. Like within the next hour or so. He's throwing too many pitches, though. At this rate it will take him 140 to finish the game.
  22. I really wish they'd do something about the home plate mike. Every pitch sounds an axe hitting a tree stump.
  23. You guys get it. That's why I like coming here. When I hear things like that crap from Costas, my impulse is to get all pontifical (I've won pontification contests; you don't want to mess with me) and say things like "Bob Costas may not care what happens in a Mets-Cubs game. Most baseball fans may not care. But the Mets care, the Cubs care, their fans care, and if something good happens for them in the middle of a miserable season, they have as much right as anyone to celebrate. And where I see the downfall of civilization is in the idea that only the winners matter, that only they are entitled to be excited by a dramatic victory. It isn't only the winners who matter, Mr. Costas. It's all of us--the winners, the losers (who tomorrow might be winners), and the most of us who live somewhere in between. Etc." But you guys already know all that. I did give some shit to an idiot who posted on Yahoo, though. It felt pretty good.
