  1. The thing about game scores is, they were never meant to measure how well someone pitched, but how impressive he was. A shutout's a shutout; if you don't allow any runs, it doesn't matter if you struck out 20 and allowed 1 hit, or allowed 12 hits and didn't strike out anybody. But the first game is definitely more impressive than the second. It's definitely biased in favor of more recent pitchers, as far as the highest individual game scores. But overall it's actually biased the other way, since pitcher's used to pitch more innings.
  2. Baseball Reference uses Bill James's original game score calculation. There's a modified formula used by FanGraphs and mlb.com. DeGrom's game score was 91 by the first formula, 97 by the second. Cone's 19-strikeout game was 99 or 105. Seaver's one-hitter was 96 or 103. Leach's one-hitter was 91 or 93.

You can see how far past the bag he is when he finishes sliding. Also no one that is trying to get to second aims their feet three feet wide of the bag. But he's allowed to slide past the bag. And he's allowed to slide three feet wide of the bag so long as he can touch the base with his hand. So long as he can touch it after completion of the slide. Here's where he was at that point. He's not even close to being able to touch it.

  5. The Fox broadcast is unbearable. They talked to Travis and Chase's mom for a whole inning, and didn't show a replay of a close play at second. I'm happy for Mrs. d'Arnaud too, but I'm trying to watch a game here.
  6. I had a dream one time that the Mets would be playing a big piece of lasagna at first. I still like that better than any of these options.
  7. If they're going after speed guys, the Mets are safe.
  8. It can't be the 1965 old-timers' game, because in 1965 Spahn wasn't an old-timer. And neither was Eddie Mathews, who's there with him. And if it's a regular game in 1965, why are Spahn and the Braves both in home uniforms? It could be a Braves-Cubs game, but that leaves the question of what Spahn's doing there (and who's the old guy on the right in what looks like Mack Jones's number 48?). Maybe it's a spring training game, and Spahn just decided to drive the four hours over to West Palm Beach to see his old teammates. It could be an old-timers' game a few years later, but if it was held by the Mets, then the Braves wouldn't be in home uniforms. And if it was held by the Braves, then Spahn wouldn't be a Met. It can't be the 1965 All-Star game, because Spahn wasn't on the team and wouldn't have been in uniform (and certainly not a home uniform--it was held in Minnesota).
  9. If he signed with the Mets thinking he was going to play every day, or at least platoon with Lagares, then he's being damn nice about having to ride the bench. I respect that a lot. Is it possible they warned him they were still going after a bigger name?
  10. Erica and the kid are wearing Hudson's Bay Company sweaters. Showing their Canadian pride.

Pitches extremely well and then will be sent back to the bullpen when the regular starter(s) return. The only difference is Logan is younger then Terry was. So he may be auditioning for a job elsewhere. And I hope he stays. Someone will have to fill that swing-man role when Bartolo leaves. Later Terry Leach is who I was thinking of too. Another difference, though, is that Leach really had trouble with lefties. That was what always held him back, and it's why he was a starter only when there was no other option. Verrett might very well end up a full-time starter somewhere.
  12. She seemed fine, and good for her for landing this job. I'll reserve judgment, though, until I hear her actually call a game, instead of going on and on about whatever the storyline is supposed to be. Do even Royals fans want to hear half an hour of blather about what a special kind of dickhead Eric Hosmer is?
  13. That cab needs to be green, doesn't it?
  14. I get those, the blood clots in the bladder. Been getting them for over thirty years, once or twice a year. No reason to assume it's something bad, but yeah, you do need to have something like that tested. Someday I'll have to tell you all my cystoscope story.

I forget the reason(s) but it was a big deal at the time as that was one of the biggest radio stations is all the country which, from their vantage point in middle America, could be heard over half the country in the right conditions and was considered a big reason why the Red Birds were the most popular team in the mid-west and throughout much of the south for so many years. That's true. My great-grandfather was a Cardinals fan. He'd listen to the games on the porch of his farmhouse outside Comanche, Texas. That was in the sixties, but it probably went back to the thirties, when Comanche's own Tex Carleton and the Dean brothers led the Cardinals to the pennant.

  17. So either he's extremely stupid or there's a big conspiracy with him as the target. Those are the basic options, right? It's a tough call, but I'm going to go with stupid.
  18. Lucas Duda is probably my favorite Met right now. A big, talented guy with self-esteem issues who doesn't take them out on anyone but himself. How could I not love that?
  19. 1. I'm driving an Auburn roadster. 2. I'm wearing an ivory linen suit. 3. Of course, I’m wearing two-tone brogues. 4. As I get closer, reporters can hear “If You Knew Susie” blasting from the hot combo in the back seat. 5. Pulling in, they look in my rumble seat and see Louise Brooks asleep with a copy of The Constant Nymph. That, or the pile of cans I forgot to drop off at the recycling. 6. I turn off my engine, get out, and say, “Can’t talk now, fellas. Sorry. I really have to pee.”
  20. Z, if you want to buy a copy, there are several booksellers that have it. There's another book by the same title published in 1913 or so, but I don't think Tommie Agee is in it. http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&recentlyadded=all&sortby=17&sts=t&tn=how+to+play+the+outfield&yrh=1973&yrl=1972
  21. I'll remember something positive. When he was on, he had the most incredible movement on his pitches. Wiffleball movement. Like he was snapping his wrist as hard as he could on every pitch. It was hard to imagine him keeping that up for long without seriously hurting himself. And maybe he was aware of that. Maybe he figured that if he didn't make his bundle now, he wasn't going to be around to make it later.
  22. It's not a tilde, it's an acento agudo. Sorry to be pedante.
  23. That's great stuff. I wish somebody would do some speed correction on some of the clips. I want one of those warmup sweaters, like the ones the Giants and Honus Wagner are wearing. The Giants had a lot of damn nerve calling themselves the 1904 World Champions, even wearing shirts that say so. I believe that's Hughie Jennings at 1:00, coaching third for the Tigers and enjoying the hell out of it. Interesting to see Daniel Murphy when he was still batting righthanded. I'd ban Buck Weaver just for being so ugly. Kid Gleason looks like he's having fun. His team really screwed him over.
