  2. Bye, Cal. It's been fun.
  3. What the hell is going on here? This is crazy.
  4. If the series ends tonight, then yeah, Murphy's the MVP. But if it goes 7, then we're less than halfway through right now. Murphy could go cold while someone else steps up, or maybe DeGrom could pitch a gem in game 7. Or, you know, the Cubs could win the thing, and then the MVP is some doofus in a blue uniform.

  6. Koufax apparently took some night classes at Columbia. There's also Andy Coakley (Penn), Bump Hadley (Brown).
  7. Sandy Koufax. Or does Columbia not count? I don't think those are the only Ivy League starters
  8. Dickey-getting-whacked face.
  9. And Mookie was going to be safe anyway. No way Buckner was going to beat him to the bag. Then it's first and third, and Hojo drives a single off the right field wall. In my alternate reality, anyway. Not as memorable as the way it actually ended, but I'll take it.
  10. Hendricks has been mediocre this year, and his manager doesn't trust him at all, which explains all the no-decisions. But he was excellent when called up last year, his minor league numbers are impressive, he's still young, and he could be a good one. Let's postpone his rise to greatness for at least one game.
  11. Game 6: in my apartment, Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, with a friend from Boston. Grad school, Washington University. We were both miserable through most of it; it was a very trying game, and of course as a Red Sox fan he was used to disaster. When the ball went through Buckner's legs, I raised my arms and shouted "Yes!" And immediately apologized. Game 7: In my apartment again, this time by myself (not sure why my wife wasn't there). I turned the TV on at intervals, until the Mets finally broke through. I don't remember what I did after it was over; probably walked up and down the Central West End feeling secretly happy and special.
  12. I want this generation of kids not to remember anything but the Mets winning the Series every other year. To ask, if they're ever in the Bronx, what that dirty old building is that looks like a bank. To bring the Mets message of perseverance and patient aggression to a suffering world. To know that blue and orange go great together, because really, they do.
  13. Edgy MD wrote: Pretty interesting that the Mets swept the Braves in the first-ever NLCS and got no saves from Taylor and McGraw. How strange a pitching performance was Nolan Ryan in Game Three, taking over in the third inning and pitching the rest of the way for the win? Is there any post-season parallel? Moe Drabowsky, 1966: came on in the third with one out and the bases loaded, walked a man to drive in a run but finished the game with no further scoring and got the win.
  14. I went with "Let's" because it's the most inclusive--"Let us." "Go" sounds like it's ordering the team to win, which I think puts unnecessary pressure on them. And "Mets" is just the team, but I think we should be encouraging all of us who are rooting them on and enjoying their success. I minored in parsing.

  16. I like Harvey for game one. I've just got a good feeling about him.
  17. It's not a big workload, it's just a little worrisome that he seemed a bit off tonight. And you need something to worry about.
  18. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: Harvey's staying in! I'm surprised. Me too. And even more surprised to see him get the bunt down.
  19. Somehow it's Lester I 'm concerned about. I've got visions of Bruce Hurst shutting the Mets down after being overshadowed by Roger Clemens. If they can beat Lester, I'll feel pretty good about this series.
  20. Valadius wrote: Fman99 wrote: Muffy thanks Dinosaur Jesus! FTFY You're welcome, Murph. Next time finish that cycle, okay? I really, really don't want to lose to the Cubs, but it couldn't hurt more than this would have. Evil loses in five!
  21. It's fun like a colonoscopy is fun. I feel good now. I quit watching the game in the bottom of the first. I couldn't take it. I just followed the reactions here, and snuck a peek once in a while at the play-by-play on mlb.
  22. Going out of the baseline to take out the fielder does happen all the time, it's almost never called, and it's not generally considered a dirty play. That's all true, but everyone who keeps repeating that is missing the point. What makes this play dirty is that Ruben's back was turned. It was turned when Utley left his feet, and was still turned when Utley hit him. And the other defense of Utley, that Ruben was out of position (because of Murphy's poor feed and his own bad decision to try for the double play) is also beside the point. Utley could see that Ruben was defenseless, and he went after him anyway.
