  1. But who is the Daryl/Doc combo on the Mets to which they added Keith? Harvey? Maybe; it's still early, but maybe. But who's the young Darryl? D'Anaud? So far he hasn't been healthy enough the last 2 seasons to know. There is no other young hitter at any level of the organization that you could think of as a can't miss blue chip prospect. Maybe Nimmo, but he's too far away. And they would need to get a power-hitting Ofer or leadoff type on this side of 30, with a few years left on a contract or still under team control (arbitration, etc) to make it worth doing. When those players have been available in the past, they've always been too expensive for the Mets. "We tried", "we made a good offer", or whatever other excuse they gave for coming up short. I anticipate a lot of that kind of excuse-making to continue under the Wilpon regime.

  3. blah blah blah tell fans what they want to hear blah blah blah give them false hope to sell tickets blah blah blah
  4. the dummy scouting company is called a "coaching staff", and i'm sure they share their insights with each other and the team throughout a season. I don't mind having a 3TO-type hitter in the lineup (you don't want a bunch of them, but 1 in the 5th-6th hole can really put pressure on a pitcher), but they have to be prodigious sluggers. 25-30hrs won't cut it. They have to give you 40+hrs and 100+ BBs; then they can be quite valuable. Much less than that, though, and they just make too many outs for too little production. And so far, that's been the deal with Ike; 25 HRs and 70 BBs aren't worth 150Ks, a .240 BA and an incredibly inconsistent bat that can disappear for MONTHS at a time. The bang isn't worth the buck. If he doesn't change his entire approach, i don't see him staying in the majors long term.
  5. i know for a fact that every time i've walked in front of my TV while a Met game was on, they've lost. But i'm finally at a place in my life where i can own it and accept the responsibility.
  6. that last photo of Tug looks like a LeRoy Neiman painting. But in a good way.
  7. Duda/Ankiel/Byrd isn't a great outfield, but it's not terrible. yes. yes it is. In fact, if you looked up terrible OFs in the Encyclopedia Britannica, there they'd be.
  8. i wrote off 2013 before the season started, so i have no issue with that. I just think that Davis needs some time away, with an incentive to accept changes in his approach, if he's ever going to be anything. And it does the other young players on the team no good at all to marinate in the juice of Davis's fruitless flailing. It's depressing to all and sundry. And whether Lutz, Satin, Cambell or Brown are "the answer" at 1B has yet to be determined. Some AAAA guys just need a real shot.
  9. and i'm his co-pilot on the road to triple unhappiness. why do we continue to do this to ourselves, KC?
  10. Why do these articles keep saying "the Mets have no one to replace him"? Do we have a top 1B prospect ready? No, but Brown and Lutz are on the 40-man, and Campbell and Satin are at AAA, too, and they're all hitting well this year. You can throw Dykstra at AA in there for good measure. These aren't young kids and they've proven to be hitters at the top minor league levels. I'd say any of them could hit better than .150 while Davis takes the time to work on his swing in Vegas.
  11. 1bmen in system: AAA - E.Campbell (RH/26), J.Satin (RH/28) AA - A.Dykstra (LH/26) A - J.Boyd (RH/22) All of these guys are hitting well right now. Campbell has hit well 3 of the past 4 years.
  12. he can go fuck a white tiger for all i care (though that might make Siegfried jealous). just get him out of town.
  13. Argh. eNUFF with this guy! NEXT!
  14. while i happen to share his disinterest in soccer, he is the one with a sports talk show, and excluding discussion of a major sport just cuz he's not interested in (ie, he knows nothing about) it is the equivalent of malpractice.
  15. george foster in 86.
  16. the TiTTS say "yea, verily, yea."
  17. Just rewatched the HR, which in real time I didn't think was that big a deal in terms of Valdy doing his usual thing because so many players in baseball don't run out of the box when they think they've gone deep. And now that I've seen it again...I still don't see what was so gol'dang unusual about it. Yeah, a little extra mustard, a disturbing trend, call Phil Mushnick, whatever. But did he high-five himself? Dance a jig? They were losing by a bunch...they're always losing by a bunch. I was there Saturday saw him get hit, took me a moment to realize what the "purpose" was...gads, big league ballplayers are touchy. Fuck the Pirates mostly. They're offended they had to wait an extra 30 second to get to the postgame spread? Take it out on Contreras. Collins shouldn't be in trouble over his remarks. He should be in trouble because the Mets are 42-71 in their last 113 That's the point for me... the Mets had much more reason to be annoyed with him than the Bucs did. They were up 7-1... what the hell do they care if a Met wants to make a total fool of himself by cadillacing in a losing blowout, putting the spotlight on his own accomplishment during his own team's losing effort. I would totally understand why OUR pitcher would want to hit Valdy, but why the BUCs? Sure, if Valdy did it while the Mets were blowing the BUCS out, showing them up and rubbing it in, then absolutely, bombs away. But this? Just alot of "know your place, rook" bullshit.
  18. well, from my list, i think Phillips, Miller, and Bogar fit that definition, more or less. And did anybody think Eric Valent was going to get all the playing time he got? But i guess he's not utility-ish enough.
  19. names that come to mind (some played more than others): Mike Phillips Bobby Valentine Bill Almon Bob Bailor Keith Miller Jeff McKnight Bill Pecota Tim Bogar Jason Hardtke Shawn Gilbert Joe McEwing Eric Valent Chris Woodward J.Turner
  20. i'd take that rotation over the one we currently have.
  21. they're more interested in the appearance of truth than truth itself. much like our justice system and political process.
  22. well, i saw it. Feh. * why use the Mandarin, the original and quintessential IM villain, and then turn him into ... that? * AIM is really undeveloped as a concept, considering it's the real villain of the piece. * a plucky kid sidekick? really? REALLY? * what does it take to put down one of these Extremis soldiers? blowing out the heart? cutting off the head? total disintigration? They're pretty inconsistent about that. * The beautiful double-crossing scientist has been helping the homicidal nutball for a decade, but after one guilt-tripping speech from Stark, she's prepared to kill herself to stop everything she's worked on? Wow, that Stark sure has a magic tongue... and he's persuasive too; * Pepper is the only one more annoying than Tony; * If Stark had all those suits readly to launch, why does he wait so long to summon them while he's suitless and in the clutches of the bad guy? * And after showing how useful the multitude of suits were, and Pepper now grateful for their existence, he gets rid of them all? Why? Just to make a nice Xmas fireworks display? * If the iron in his heart was operable, why didn't he ever do it before? was there some medical breakthru that went unremarked upon? Or has he just cured himself of a deathwish? * Once he removes the power core from his chest, he's no longer Iron Man... he's a rich, drunken genius with daddy issues and a bunch of cool metal suits. I did like Ben Kingsley, and the post-credit bit with Bruce. But not much else. It did elevate my opinion of IM 2, however. so there's that.
  23. i'm going Sunday eve with my family, for my Bday. So I say thee "nay" upon all naysayers. At least until i am one.
  24. The Redford version is dreadful. The Alan Ladd version actually isn't bad. I read the book in HS and it has stayed with me like few other books ever have. In fact, I can still see that green light at the end of the dock as I "beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
