  1. Has Beltran ever managed so much as a little league team? has he ever coached? i didn't think so. i'm sure this will turn out well. after all, what could go wrong?
  2. wasn't that the plot of Star Wars I?
  3. If its taking 3 rounds, then nobody has gotten them excited. Meanwhile, Girardi is now coaching for a team in our division. And we're leaving the final decision to Koufax's synaptically-challenged golfing buddy? God grant me the serenity...
  4. I've watched at least a few games (whether on tv, live or on radio) every year for around 50 years, and it's ALL been a desert wilderness, with a brief stop at an oasis in the mid-80s.
  5. And Bill Almon! and Ty Kelly! and Jason Kardtke! and Shawn Gilbert! and Shane Halter! and Jeff McNight! and Keith Miller...
  6. Tim Bogar = scrappy utility guy who "played the right way" = white guy who couldn't hit that well. (see Joe, Super)

Because it's spot on.
  9. bingo. I'm steeling myself for the arrival of the Booger.
  10. they showed it at half-time during MNF last night. Nothing like Disney promoting itself across its platforms! But it still gave me chills.
  11. we never even finished the superhero tournament!
  12. Hey, i thought we had all found common ground in the fact that the Wilpons suck! What happened?
  13. common ground found: The Wilpons suck.
  14. i suspect we don't disagree on what they are likely to do, as well.
  15. you don't trade that much away unless your going to extend the player. I don't like rentals, as an organizational philosophy. But if the deal is Syndy, Nimmo, Smith and Mauricio in a sign and trade? I do that in a heartbeat. Hell, i'll throw in Davis too! and the Sox only do it if Betts has made it clear he won't re-sign with them (and other big market teams can't make a better offer). If Betts is intent on becoming a FA, then you don't trade for him. You just sign him to a bigger contract than anybody else when he goes on the market and don't give up anybody. But of course they won't do that either.
  16. i'm sorry, but what now? Mookie Betts is an MVP/All-Star/GG/SS player IN HIS PRIME. he's like 26-27. He's the kind of guy Philly is paying whatisname to be even though he isn't. Mookie does EVERYTHING. He averages near 8 WAR per full season. He's never hurt. He is a 5-tool player. If Boston traded him for Syndy (whose best year was a 5 WAR) and some part-time guys like Dom and/or Davis, and boom/bust a-ball prospects (we have no A+ prospects), the Boston fans would and should burn down Fenway. You don't do the deal because we'd get 1 more year of Noah than of Betts? RUFucking kidding me? Tell you what... make the trade and then sign him to the Harper+ deal he's going to get somewhere else.
  17. no, but he can control whether or not he hangs a slider in the zone, as he did SOOOOO many times in the 9th inning this year.
  18. Vic Sage wrote: In all seriousness... see, that's the problem. Why shouldn't it be a serious notion that the Mets sign Cole? I mean i know why its not, but $$ is not an acceptable answer for a NYC franchise with a mid-market budget. For the record, I think the Mets should sign Cole, re-sign Wheeler, sign Rendon, and trade Syndergaard to the Red Sox for Mookie Betts (and if they have to include Smith or Davis too, fine). yeah, fine. but seriously... The Mets "core" are all young and under team control. The only big contracts that will still be on the books after next season are Cano and Degrom. There is absolutely no budgetary reason they couldn't replace Wheeler with Cole. But we react to that reality by saying "not only Cole, but we should keep Wheeler, and get Rendon and Betts too!" (a trio which would bust even a Yankee budget) as if a contract for Cole is similarly preposterous.
  19. as to the performances, some were appealing, some less so, but they did get me to reconsider the music, which i guess was the point. I liked some of the new arrangements and interpretations, but your mileage may vary.
  20. He's certain that the menage a trois song would've gone top 40! Damn you, McGuinn! Having just seen it, I can't disagree with anything Edgy says, but i think there is a bit too much damning of the project for what it isn't and what it didn't (and chose not to) do. I liked what i saw more than i didn't like what wasn't there, if that makes any sense. It's not a portrait of the Laurel Canyon cultural scene; it's a more narrowly focused look at the LA music scene of a certain period (65-67), framing it as the response to the Beatles and the birth of folk-rock, and the nature of the feedback loop that musicians were in then, impacted and impacting each other's music as they lived in each other's lives in the canyon. The later artists (Browne, Petty) are commenting in terms of the affect that the music would later have on them (as "echoes" of the canyon). There were some cinematic moves, and i found the piece interesting, even if not the more complete portrait it could have (and maybe should've) been.

  22. Hire. Maddon. Now.
  23. its bass-ackwards of how stats are supposed to work. 200 strikeouts is an indicator of a power pitcher who has dominated throughout a season. Its something you assess after the accomplishment, not a line of demarcation that a player should be striving for in and of itself. Its a consequence, not a reason. 200 is just a round fucking number and these guys are INTENTIONALLY dropping balls in the 9th inning of a close game? If you have demanded that a teammate throw an out away to achieve a personal (and meaningless) goal, then i would fucking trade you. is my outrage "faux"? Go faux yourself.
  24. and if the Mets bullpen hadn't blown an MLB-leading number of games BEFORE Sept 1, then their lead would have been big enough to withstand a Brewer hot streak.
  25. somebody teach this guy a changeup.
